An eight-year-old boy has stolen his dad's van so he could get a cheeseburger from McDonald's.

The hungry kid, from Ohio, taught himself how to drive by watching YouTube videos.

He "borrowed" his dad's van when his parents were sleeping, bringing his four-year-old sister along for the ride.

Police told The Weirton Daily Times that the pair drove 800 metres from their home to the drive-thru restaurant, but when he ordered his food workers thought it was a prank.

Witnesses told police the underage driver obeyed all the road rules, including stopping at lights and observing speed limits.

"This kid learned how to drive on YouTube" police officer Jacob Koehler said.

"He didn't hit a single thing on the way there. It was unreal.

"I think there is a good teaching point here. With the way technology is… kids will learn how to do anything and everything.

"He probably looked it up for five minutes and then said it was time to go."

A friend of the family saw the children and told their grandparents, while police also received a number of calls from concerned members of the public.

The naughty pair ate at McDonald's while they waited for their grandparents to pick them. While the kids had had their three square meals that day, they just "really wanted" a cheeseburger.

No charges were filed.

We can only wonder what else this ingenious kid has taught himself to do while watching YouTube. Perhaps it might be safer for him to teach himself how to cook cheeseburgers.
