Volkswagen teases new electric SUV

German brand gets set to debut the next stage of its electric vehicle plan.

Volkswagen is charging up its future - again.

The German brand is set to show off the next instalment in its electric car future, a new coupe-styled SUV concept at the upcoming 2017 Shanghai motor show.

Referred to as the I.D. crossover concept, it will follow in the footsteps of the earlier I.D. hatchback from the 2016 Paris motor show and the I.D. Buzz concept from the 2017 Detroit motor show in guiding a light on the car makers future vehicle direction.

With a coupe-styled roof and four-doors the new I.D crossover concept is expected to take on a similar form as the BMW X4.

The concept is a window into Volkswagen's future as it moves away from the low-lying smoke of the dieselgate era and embarks on a flighty plan to launch a number of fully-electric vehicles from 2020 with steep global sales targets, too.

Designed with all-wheel drive, the I.D. crossover concept showcases a range of future technology, namely autonomous driving features which uses an array of laser, ultrasonic and radar sensors, along with cameras, to guide the vehicle.

As with most Volkswagen models, the I.D. vehicles are expected to share a modular platform and drivelines when they see production.

Its so fantastic that VW will be expanding the range of EVs. We'll wait out getting a new car untill a suitable EV comes along.

While I understand the need to generate media hype and public interest - I find articles such as this, both from car manufacturers and the media, thoroughly disintesting, and little better than clickbait. Please Drive, you are a car magazine. It is read by people who love cars and the engineering that goes into them. I find myself reading your content less and less, as the internet is full of much more interesting information. I also realise that the pop up ad for VW to the right is where the money comes from, but perhaps you could get someone from Volkswagen to talk through their new engines for the Tiggie, or the tricks involved in getting a start stop engine to work - and how VW's approach works as opposed to other car makers (it is pretty clever), and why start stop is not such an impost on the mechanicals. Surely, VW would be happy to do PR based on their engineering - after all - engineering and quality are why people are supposed to be driving VW's.

I have lost faith in the whole idea of concept vehicles. They always look great but then some crap is eventually released years later. I have yet to ever see anything close to the concept car ever reach production. One classic example is the VW Touareg - The concept drawings looked amazing but then the actual production vehicle was released looking nothing like it. The 2017 Touareg is the ugliest car for a while, I thought the previous model was ugly and couldn't get much worse. Then they added a chrome stripe and changed the grill a touch. What drugs are they on? Seriously
