Subaru has taken the covers off its long-awaited replacement for the Tribeca SUV.

The Ascent Concept was the star attraction for the Japanese brand at the 2017 New York motor show, as the brand's first seven-seat large SUV in a decade.

It is powered by an all-new turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine but the company hasn't revealed any technical details of the engine including its capacity or performance.

The Ascent Concept measures 5029mm in length, which makes it slightly longer than the Toyota Kluger.

But there's bad news for Australian familes as the Ascent will be built in the US in left-hand drive only. Former Subaru Australia boss Nick Senior had previously indicated that the new SUV wouldn't be available locally despite the obvious need to fill the hole in the line-up above the Forester.

The Tribeca was a disappointment for the brand during its eight-year run in Australia. Initially it struggled to attract buyers thanks to its polarizing styling but it eventually found a steady group of buyers. However it was not enough to save the model and it was axed in 2013.
