Hawija (Arabic: الحويجة, Al Hawyjah; Kurdish "hawij" for wild carrot) is the centre of Al-Hawija District in the Kirkuk province of Iraq, 30 miles south of Kirkuk, and north of Baghdad.
Hawija district has approximately 450,000 inhabitants, about 98 percent of them Sunni Arabs and the rest mostly Sunni Turkmens. Most of the inhabitants live in rural areas.
During the Iraq War, U.S. and Iraqi forces experienced numerous lethal attacks in the area from Sunni insurgents. As of March 2006, the area of Hawija was considered one of the most dangerous in all of Iraq with US soldiers and the foreign press corps in Baghdad dubbing Hawija "Anbar of the North," a reference to the violence wracked province in Western Iraq.
Following the Iraq War, Hawija came into media focus on 19 April 2013, when an unprecedented amount of violence erupted. In the 2013 Hawija clashes between Sunni protesters and Iraqi Army, some 53 people were killed. Further associated violence brought the total death toll by April 27, to 215.

The city of Hawija in the northern Iraqi province of Kirkuk is one of the last remaining strongholds held by the Daesh Takfiri terrorists. But it is not likely to remain so for long as the Iraqi army and volunteer forces are getting ready for a major operation to liberate the city and its surrounding areas. Families escaping ISIS from Hawija cross the farmlands and are spotted by PMU patrols looking for families that answer the daily broadcasts to escape. The environment is harsh and ISIS does not allow civilians to leave. We collect any civilians found in escape and bring them to front line medical centres and then move them to secure areas for full aid with our international partners.

According to Press TV sources, the US State Department has provided anti-tracking and anonymous surfing software to militants in order to facilitate their activities online. The department is said to have trained the armed groups in maintaining communications security through two NGOs, namely the Institute for War & Peace Reporting, and Freedom House. Takfiri insurgents have an active presence on social networking websites, particularly Twitter and Facebook. They use the sites to post news, photos and videos of their atrocities. Radical muftis also use Twitter to publicize their verdicts issued in support of the militants. A recent survey has revealed that posts by Takfiri groups have been mostly re-tweeted in Turkey and Iraq.

Iraqi insurgency surged in the aftermath of the U.S. withdrawal. The terror campaigns have since been engaged by Iraqi, primarily radical Sunni, insurgent groups against the central government and the warfare between various factions within Iraq. The events of post U.S. withdrawal violence succeeded the previous insurgency in Iraq (prior to 18 December 2011), but have showed different patterns, raising concerns that the surging violence might slide into another civil war. Some 1,000 people were killed across Iraq within the first two months since U.S. withdrawal. Sectarian violence continued in the first half of 2013— at least 56 people died in April when a Sunni protest in Hawija was interrupted by a government-supported helicopter raid and a series of violent incidents occurred in May.
