Let’s Begin! 5.) MANHUNT 2 Manhunt 2 was the sequel to the polarizing and controversial game Manhunt. Manhunt was banned in several countries, but narrowly escaped ban in the US. The game was controversial not only because of it’s graphic violence, but because of the game’s sadistic narrative and message as well. While the federal government doesn’t ban or censor video games, the Entertainment Software Ratings Board awards rating to games. Most console publishers and retailers, like Nintendo and Gamestop, refuse to sell unrated or games or games with adults only ratings, meaning that even if they were “released” no one would sell them. Manhunt 2, like its predecessor, narrowly avoided the AO rating but at the cost of the developers changing the game significantly and removing the point system. Some retailers have sold digital copies of the game’s unrated PC version, but the game was effectively banned in most of the first world. 4.) GRAND THEFT AUTO (several) The Rockstar Games franchise Grand Theft Auto as a franchise has faced backlash and criticism by both sides of the political spectrum because of it’s graphic violence, sexual images, and alleged glorification of crime and violence. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas retroactively received an AO rating after it was revealed that the game had a secret, explicit sex minigame, and presidential nominee Hillary Clinton campaigned for the game to be banned and the video game industry to be federally regulated as a result. Sequels to the franchise were banned by numerous different retailers and countries for many number of reasons, including those listed above as well as potential connections to crimes committed by alleged gamers. The latest title, Grand Theft Auto V, was removed from sale by a number of large retail chains because of a push by feminists. 3.) BULLY The last game on this list created by Grand Theft Auto is also maybe the most tame game on this list. Bully was a 2006 video game released by Rockstar Games in which players adopted the role of a boy shipped off to boarding school by his mother and stepfather. The game was banned in a number of countries because its depictions of violence against children (by children), and due to other themes. Before the game had even released, the game was painted as glorifying bullying, though the game’s title was a pun based on the name of the school in the game, Bullworth Academy. The game was nearly banned in the UK, but escaped with a name change. It was banned in Brazil. 2.) WITCHER The Witcher series has at times been controversial due to its sexual imagery. Feminists decried the first game because of its nudity and the way they alleged it objectified women. The second game was originally banned in Australia because of one questline where Geralt had the opportunity to receive sex in exchange for completing a quest. This was changed by the developers to suit the tastes of Australian censors, and the game was subsequently released. The Witcher 3 on the other hand was banned in Saudi Arabia, even after the game was changed for the Saudi Arabian region, and a year after the game had launched. 1.) COMMAND AND CONQUER GENERALS Commander and Conquer Generals was a spin off the popular Command and Conquer franchise, a classic real time strategy series that debuted in 1995 that played on themes and elements of the Cold War. Command and Conquers Generals released in 2003, and had a narrative more relevant to the post-9/11 world, a war between the allied powers of the United States and China against a Middle Eastern terrorist group called the Global Liberation Army. While you might assume the gay may have been banned in the Middle East because of this, it was actually banned in China. Through the game’s Chinese campaign, Chinese landmarks and cities are destroyed (sometimes by the player) in the war against the terrorist group, and Tiananmen Square is destroyed by a nuclear device in a cut scene. The game was also banned from sale to children and teenagers in Germany because of the Iraq War.
