Derbyshire (i/ˈdɑːrbᵻʃər/ or /ˈdɑːrbɪʃɪər/; abbreviated Derbys. or Derbs.) is a county in the East Midlands of England. A substantial portion of the Peak District National Park lies within Derbyshire. The southern extremity of the Pennine range of hills extends into the north of the county. The county contains part of the National Forest, and borders on Greater Manchester to the northwest, West Yorkshire to the north, South Yorkshire to the northeast, Nottinghamshire to the east, Leicestershire to the southeast, Staffordshire to the west and southwest and Cheshire also to the west. Kinder Scout, at 636 metres (2,087 ft), is the highest point in the county, whilst Trent Meadows, where the River Trent leaves Derbyshire, is its lowest point at 27 metres (89 ft). The River Derwent is the county's longest river at 66 miles (106 km), and runs roughly north to south through the county. In 2003 the Ordnance Survey placed Church Flatts Farm at Coton in the Elms (near Swadlincote) as the furthest point from the sea in Great Britain.
The County Championship (currently known as the LV= County Championship because of its sponsor, Liverpool Victoria) is the domestic first-class cricket competition in England and Wales. The competition consists of eighteen clubs named after, and originally representing, historic counties, seventeen from England and one from Wales.
Until 1890, the concept of an unofficial championship existed whereby various claims would be made by or on behalf of a particular club as the "Champion County", an archaic term which now has the specific meaning of an unofficial claimant for the County Championship title prior to 1890. In contrast, the term "County Champions" applies in common parlance to a team that has won the official title since 1890.
The most usual means of claiming the unofficial title was by popular or press acclaim. In the majority of cases, the claim or proclamation was retrospective, often by cricket writers using reverse analysis via a study of known results. The unofficial title was not proclaimed in every season up to 1889 because in many cases there were not enough matches or there was simply no clear candidate. Having already been badly hit by the Seven Years' War, county cricket ceased altogether during the Napoleonic Wars and there was a period from 1797 to 1824 during which no inter-county matches took place. The concept of the unofficial title has been utilised ad hoc and relied on sufficient interest being shown.
MV Derbyshire was an ore-bulk-oil combination carrier built in 1976 by Swan Hunter, as the last in the series of the Bridge-class sextet. She was registered at Liverpool and owned by Bibby Line.
She was lost on 9 September 1980 during Typhoon Orchid, south of Japan. All 42 crew members and two of their wives were killed in the sinking. At 91,655 gross register tons, she was—and remains—the largest British ship ever to have been lost at sea.
Derbyshire was launched in late 1975 and entered service in June 1976, as the last ship of the Bridge-class combination carrier, originally named Liverpool Bridge. Liverpool Bridge and English Bridge (later Worcestershire) were built by Seabridge for Bibby Line. The ship was laid up for two of its four years of service life.
In 1978, Liverpool Bridge was renamed Derbyshire, the fourth vessel to carry the name in the company's fleet. On 11 July 1980, on what turned out to be the vessel's final voyage, Derbyshire left Sept-Îles, Canada, her destination being Kawasaki, Japan. Derbyshire was carrying a cargo of 157,446 tonnes of iron ore.
Animation from a documentary describing the chain of events leading up to the quick sinking of the bulk carrier MV Derbyshire on the 9th September 1980 during typhoon orchid of the coast of Japan. All lives onboard where lost due to the speed at which these events took place.
To start off our summer of travel we headed to England. This trip was more unique than others for several reasons. First, this was our first trip to England (and Europe for that matter). Second, this trip contained two countries (a first for OrcaTrip). Finally, this trip overlapped Ashleys birthday. We spent the majority of our time in Northern England, sight seeing and getting acquainted with local pubs. In this video we explore Chesterfield, The Chatsworth Estate, and the devils arse (a local cave) which are all found within Derbyshire. Bakewell, located in the Peak District, in the beautiful county of Derbyshire is rich in history and tradition and has many events throughout the year and hosts a country show every August. Bakewell gets it's name from the Anglo Saxon words for ‘bath-spring’. These early settlers were attracted to the warm springs and wells in the area. It is easy to get to Bakewell, which is less than 37 miles from Manchester airport and takes approximately one hour travelling through unspoilt countryside. Although popular in other local towns, in the 17th century they was a failed attempt to change the town in to a fashionable spa. There are many places of interest that you can visit, including the historical houses of Haddon hall and Chatsworth House, which is the seat to the current Earl of Devo...
We started our journey from London. Our Destination was Lake District, Cumbria. It is a non metropolitan county in North West England. We reached there by evening and stayed at YHA Ambleside. The rent was 40 £ for 4 person. The room was very nice. Next morning we woke up early and visited almost all the eye catching places in Lake District. Trust me it's more beautiful through naked eyes than iphone 6s. After sunset we headed for Blackpool. Blackpool is a seaside resort on the Irish Sea coast of England. Decorated with a lot of entertainment buildings and amusement parks. Must be more happening and beautiful in mid summer. We stayed there for one night. Our hotel was Beachside Hotel. Well it was not that comfortable but the price was cheap (37£ for 4 person). After having lunch we lef...
