Digital audio is precisely clocked, so that sounds play back exactly as they were recorded. However, since analog machines playback from tape being pulled across a head by a mechanical shaft (called a capstan) that's coupled with a rubber wheel called either a pinch or pressure roller, there are often subtle variations in the pitch of the sound. Phonographs also have these same variations due to mechanical issues.
Higher frequency, smaller-deviations from the true pitch are called "flutter", and lower-frequency larger-deviations are called "wow". Wow is generally perceived as a pitch change, while flutter is often perceived as timbral degradation, since unwanted inharmonic overtones are produced.
On tape recorders, often simply changing the diameter of the supply hub can improve the speed consistency, since the hold-back tension increases as the diameter of the supply hub decreases.
Also, just like a violin bow on a string, the tape can actually bounce on the head due to the friction, and produce what's known as "scrape flutter". To minimize this, most tape decks have one or more rollers close to the heads called "scrape filters".
In addition, keeping the heads, guides, capstan and pressure roller clean and making sure that the tape is free of archival shed will also help decrease the wow and flutter.

Demo using the RE 201 tape echo to create lofi pitch changes. At slow tape speeds the bandwidth of the tape is very low and the motor speed slightly unpredictable. The tape also provides some compression when given a hot signal. This is hopefully a demo of an unusual and very rich sounding effect.

During this video I demonstrate the free VST, Wow and Flutter. It is great for making low-fi sounds. If you are into chillwave or glow-fi I would highly recommend getting this vst. It can do a great job of emulating cheap tape players.

Wow and Flutter
Wow and Flutter is an EP by the post-rock band Stereolab, which served as the second single from their 1994 album Mars Audiac Quintet. A limited edition of 3000 7" copies was released with hand-painted covers. The EP was also released on CD and 10" vinyl.
Two of the tracks are alternative versions of songs on Mars Audiac Quintet. "Wow and Flutter" itself is a re-recording, while "Nihilist Assault Group, Pts. 3-5" comprises sections excised from the album version, which was originally planned to be a side-long suite similar in concept to the 18-minute "Jenny Ondioline" on Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements.

All tracks appear on the Oscillons from the Anti-Sun 2005 compilation album.

Digital audio is precisely clocked, so that sounds play back exactly as they were recorded. However, since analog machines playback from tape being pulled across a head by a mechanical shaft (called a capstan) that's coupled with a rubber wheel called either a pinch or pressure roller, there are often subtle variations in the pitch of the sound. Phonographs also have these same variations due to mechanical issues.
Higher frequency, smaller-deviations from the true pitch are called "flutter", and lower-frequency larger-deviations are called "wow". Wow is generally perceived as a pitch change, while flutter is often perceived as timbral degradation, since unwanted inharmonic overtones are produced.
On tape recorders, often simply changing the diameter of the supply hub can improve the speed consistency, since the hold-back tension increases as the diameter of the supply hub decreases.
Also, just like a violin bow on a string, the tape can actually bounce on the head due to the friction, and produce what's known as "scrape flutter". To minimize this, most tape decks have one or more rollers close to the heads called "scrape filters".
In addition, keeping the heads, guides, capstan and pressure roller clean and making sure that the tape is free of archival shed will also help decrease the wow and flutter.

Digital audio is precisely clocked, so that sounds play back exactly as they were recorded. However, since analog machines playback from tape being pulled across a head by a mechanical shaft (called a capstan) that's coupled with a rubber wheel called either a pinch or pressure roller, there are often subtle variations in the pitch of the sound. Phonographs also have these same variations due to mechanical issues. Higher frequency, smaller-deviations from the true pitch are called "flutter", and lower-frequency larger-deviations are called "wow". Wow is generally perceived as a pitch change, while flutter is often perceived as timbral degradation, since unwanted inharmonic overtones are produced. Roland RE 201 extreme wow & flutter
Demo using the RE 201 tape echo to create lofi pitch changes. At slow tape speeds the bandwidth of the tape is very low and the motor speed slightly unpredictable. The tape also provides some compression when given a hot signal. This is hopefully a demo of an unusual and very rich sounding effect. In this episode Daniel and Mick follow up to a show from February 2016 where we put a genuine vintage Echoplex EP-3 up against some more modern delay pedals.
For this instalment we’ve swapped out the Echoplex for the modern production equivalent – a Fulltone Solid State Tape Echo – and selected the three new pedals for comparison for which we’ve had most requests. As you’ll hear, there are some spectacular performers in today’s video.

The Pioneer ct-95 was so good that it was the first and last deck ever tested as a reference class deck. Sometimes , especially in the past manufactures asked from their employees the maximum effort to produce miracles. In audio world this deck is one of those miracles. The pioneer ct-95 never became so popular as the nakamichi dragon even if it was half of the price. Nakamichi always had the name to be the best and until cassette deck production ended that would always be the case but real experts knew that the ct-95 defeated the dragon. After many years of reigning nakamichi there was a new emperor.

Within five minutes, two very nice employees came with wheelchairs for both of us and took us to an area where we only had to walk a short way to our seats ... What a nice service ...
