Allowing others to find you by email address or phone number

Your email address and phone number

Often the best connections on Twitter are with people you know and care about. In order to help you make those connections, we use information like your email address and/or phone number to make your account discoverable to others. By default your account settings allow this, but you can adjust them at any time (instructions below).

How would others find me by my email address or phone number?

If someone has your email address or phone number in their contacts, they may find your account when they upload those contacts to Twitter. Your account may also appear as a suggestion for others to follow if your email address or phone number is included in the contacts that others have uploaded. More information about account suggestions can be found here.

People may also find your account through third-party services that have integrated with Twitter. For example, when people receive emails from you on email services that have integrated with Twitter, they may see your Twitter profile and Tweets. This helps people you may know keep in touch better with what you care about on Twitter.

Will my email address or phone number be publicly displayed on Twitter?

No, your email address and phone number are not publicly displayed on Twitter, even if you have not turned off the setting that lets others find you by your email address or phone number.

What if I have multiple Twitter accounts associated with the same phone number?

You can have multiple Twitter accounts associated with the same phone number. Each account has its own setting to control whether others can find you by your phone number. Others will be able to find all accounts associated with the same phone number that have not turned off this setting.

How is my email address or phone number used when third parties integrate with Twitter?

To let people on third-party services that have integrated with Twitter find your Twitter account, these third-party services may send your email address or phone number to Twitter. If you have a Twitter account associated with this email address or phone number and you have not turned off the setting that lets others find you by your email address or phone number, Twitter may share your Twitter account with people through this third party service. For example, when people compose emails to you on email services that have integrated with Twitter, they may see your Twitter profile and your Tweets.

Your email address and phone number are not directly shared with third parties when your settings allow others to discover you. The settings let people that already have your email address or phone number find you on Twitter or on third-party services that have integrated with Twitter.

If you don’t want others to find your Twitter account based on your email address or phone number, you can turn this feature off, as described above.
