As you see in the video above, those security guys get put through their paces, too. In this video made on a bodycam, we watch as one guard behind a bulwark of sandbags pours lead down on small approaching pirate boats—and the pirates appear to fire back.

Piracy off the coast of Somalia started with fisherman defending their territory
After the Somali government collapsed in 1991 other nations started fishing and dumping toxic waste in Somali waters
The local fisherman would board the foreign vessels and demand a fee
They called themselves the "Coast Guard" and their stated mission was to defend Somalia's territorial integrity until the formation of a new government
These patrols eventually expanded their reach and their motives
Piracy is now Somalia's biggest source of income bringing in nearly $200 million annually
Most of the pirates are young and come from the war torn southern regions
There are typically three categories of pirates
The first is the fisherman. They are valuable for their seafaring skill and knowledge of the open waters
The second is the ex-militiaman. They previously fought for local warlords and clans.
The third is the technical expert who operates equipment such as GPS devices
The closest Somali word for pirate literally translates as "ocean robber" but most of the pirates prefer a term translated as "saviors of the sea"
With the use of motherships, the range of pirate skiffs has been extended well into the Indian Ocean
Pirates generally access the ships via ladders that they bring with them.
They will then typically use RPGs and small arms to intimidate the crew
Harming the crew typically goes strongly against the pirate code so there have not been very many pirate related casualties in the last few decades
The policy of not harming hostages also ensures that governments are less likely to step in and employ "do not negotiate" tactics

Several pirates have been prosecuted already, notably 6 were executed by a Yemeni court
In contrast, those tried in Europe receive several years in prison and are then typically not sent back to Somalia because it is deemed as too dangerous.
There are fears that this may ironically increase piracy as Somalian locals see a path to citizenship in the west

Piracy off the coast of Somalia has been a threat to international shipping since the second phase of the Somali Civil War in the early 21st century. Since 2005, many international organizations have expressed concern over the rise in acts of piracy. Piracy impeded the delivery of shipments and increased shipping expenses, costing an estimated $6.6 to $6.9 billion a year in global trade in 2011 according to Oceans Beyond Piracy (OBP). According to the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), a veritable industry of profiteers also arose around the piracy.

Security guard
A security guard, security officer, or protective agent is a private person who is paid to protect property and its assets (people, money, etc) by utilizing preventative measures. They do this by maintaining a high-visibility presence to deter illegal and inappropriate actions, observing (either directly, through patrols, or by watching alarm systems or video cameras) for signs of crime, fire or disorder; then taking action to minimize damage (example: warning and escorting trespassers off property) and reporting any incidents to their client and emergency services as appropriate. The third is the technical expert who operates equipment such as GPS devices
The closest Somali word for pirate literally translates as "ocean robber" but most of the pirates prefer a term translated as "saviors of the sea"
With the use of motherships, the range of pirate skiffs has been extended well into the Indian Ocean
Pirates generally access the ships via ladders that they bring with them.
They will then typically use RPGs and small arms to intimidate the crew
Harming the crew typically goes strongly against the pirate code so there have not been very many pirate related casualties in the last few decades
The policy of not harming hostages also ensures that governments are less likely to step in and employ "do not negotiate" tactics
The success of pirating has changed Somalia's economy. It's financial sector is surprisingly (or perhaps not so surprisingly) well developed
The operations are now very vast and intricate with an actual "stock exchange" existing where financiers can buy stock in upcoming raids
There are numerous third parties benefiting from piracy as well. These include insurance providers and pirates who have set up operations to double as pirate negotiators
Another interesting side effect is that formerly impoverished Somali and Kenyan fisherman are now able to make a living as fish populations return to normal after the departure of foreign fishing vessels
Apparently Britney Spears songs have been used as a deterrent against pirates by warships in the region
Several pirates have been prosecuted already, notably 6 were executed by a Yemeni court
In contrast, those tried in Europe receive several years in prison and are then typically not sent back to Somalia because it is deemed as too dangerous.

It looks as though the Somalian pirate menace has even created a niche within the private security industry itself. The 2015 promotional video above for Seagull Maritime Security proves these outfits have been meeting the need for a few years now.

Foreign fishing fleets stole their lobsters, which drove them to desperation. This is the reason given by poor Somali fishermen who turned into gun-toting pirates mugging giant ships for millions of dollars.
Driving to Puntland requires an armed escort to avoid kidnap. It's a lawless pocket of trouble on the Somali coast. The country's notorious instability provided an opportunity used shamelessly by the worlds fishing fleets. For years, Ali witnessed foreign trawlers stealing the lobsters. They brought ships that stole even stones from the seabed. "Before we were catching about ten tonnes per day but now we are catching three or four hundred kilos per day" says one factory owner.
"Our jobs, our profession as fishermen was stolen from us by these foreign ships." And so Ali and hundreds of others turned to piracy. Over the last twelve months there have been hundreds of attacks, including the hijacking of French yacht Le Ponant. In a much-publicised operation, the French navy freed the hostages and captured the pirates. But a long-term solution to piracy must come from the inside. "An effective anti-piracy force has to be based inside Somalia and come from Somalia," insists Africa specialist R.Middleton. Only the return of law and order could make that possible.
