Chadstone shooting: two injured

Two men are in hospital following a shooting in Woonah Street in Chadstone shortly before 5am on Monday. Vision: Channel 7.

The two victims, a 40-year-old man from Ashwood and a 37-year-old Bentleigh man, were taken to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition.

Acting Sergeant Melissa Seach said both men sustained a single gunshot wound to the lower body.

"Detectives are currently on scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone with information."

Dan Petsinis, who lives a few houses away from the crime scene, woke up to 10 text messages from friends checking that he was safe. That was how he learnt of the shooting in his "quiet street".

The 27-year-old, who works in IT, said he felt "on edge" and would now be more cautious.

"Sometimes I walk down here in the morning as early as 5am and it makes me sit and think about doing something like that," he said.

One neighbour who wanted to remain anonymous said she was not surprised by news of the shooting, describing Woonah Street as "dodgy".

Her house has been broken in to twice in the past three years she has lived on the street and she said she regularly sees people who she describes as "drug-affected" and "dishevelled" walking past her house.

Yuping Yan, who has lived on the suburban Chadstone street for just a month, said she was still in shock after hearing of the shootings.

She spoke to Fairfax Media while battling a torrent of rain to return home, which has been blocked by police tape.

Still digesting news of the "terrible" incident, she said the street was usually safe.

"I haven't of heard anything bad," she said.

No one has been arrested over the shooting, a spokeswoman for Victoria Police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
