Devizes /dᵻˈvaɪzᵻz/ is a market town and civil parish in the heart of Wiltshire, England. The town is about 10.5 miles (16.9 km) southeast of Chippenham and 11 miles (18 km) east of the county town of Trowbridge.
Devizes serves as a centre for banks, solicitors and shops and has an open market place where a market is held once a week. It has nearly five hundred listed buildings, some notable churches, a Town Hall and a green at the heart of the town. Its development has grown around the 11th century Norman castle.
Devizes Castle was built by Osmund, Bishop of Salisbury in 1080, but the town is not mentioned in the Domesday Book. Because the castle was on the boundaries of the manors of Rowde, Bishops Cannings and Potterne it became known as the castrum ad divisas ("the castle at the boundaries"), hence the name Devizes. On John Speed's map of Wiltshire (1611), the town's name is recorded as The Devyses. The first castle on the site was of the motte and bailey form and was probably made of wood and earth, but this burnt down in 1113. A new castle was built in stone by Roger of Salisbury, Osmund's successor. Devizes received its first charter in 1141 permitting regular markets. The castle changed hands several times during the civil war between Stephen of Blois and Matilda in the 12th century. The castle held important prisoners, including Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror in 1106. Robert was kept in Devizes for twenty years, before being moved to Cardiff Castle.
Harlem shake may refer to:
The Kennet and Avon Canal is a waterway in southern England with an overall length of 87 miles (140 km), made up of two lengths of navigable river linked by a canal. The name is commonly used to refer to the entire length of the navigation rather than solely to the central canal section. From Bristol to Bath the waterway follows the natural course of the River Avon before the canal links it to the River Kennet at Newbury, and from there to Reading on the River Thames. In all, the waterway incorporates 105 locks.
The two river stretches were made navigable in the early 18th century, and the 57-mile (92 km) canal section was constructed between 1794 and 1810. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the canal gradually fell into disuse after the opening of the Great Western Railway. In the latter half of the 20th century the canal was restored in stages, largely by volunteers. After decades of dereliction and much restoration work, it was fully reopened in 1990. The Kennet and Avon Canal has been developed as a popular heritage tourism destination for boating, canoeing, fishing, walking and cycling, and is also important for wildlife conservation.

I agree it is. Im not saying that I dont love Devizes - I do... infact if I didn't I wouldnt be making this video. What I am trying to do is to create a debate and get opinions on is why Devizes has so many Charity shops and shops that are closing and staying closed. That cant be a good thing for Devizes or the general look and feel of a town that wants to appear to look vibrant. This is the point of this video is to get people talking on whats perhaps needing to be done - like lowering rents or making things easier in Devizes for businesses to start up. I have been told...

A short, uncharacteristically brisk ride around the byways surrounding the Wiltshire town of Devizes (CRF450X, 6.03.12) The ride is made to appear quicker than it actually was due to a mistake in the way the video was rendered (25fps instead of 30fps).
Like Devizes' Official Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/GreatWesternDevizesOOScale/ Hello All, Here we see my new home layout in operation which is set in the South West of England at the town of Devizes in the area of Wiltshire between the 1900s and 1960s. The layout has three main scenes that make up its 11 x 11-foot space or 3.5 x 3.5 metres. Firstly, is the station area of Devizes. This features the beautifully recreated Devizes station which consists of an Up and a Down line for services heading to London via the Reading to Taunton Mainline or the other way using the Wessex Mainline from Southhampton to Bristol Temple Meads via Holt Junction. It also has a third platform with a loop and one long siding next to the controls for the layout. The yard consists of a goods ...

The charming historic maket town of Devizes lies at the very heart of Wiltshire. Founded in Norman times, the town grew up around the royal castle. The outline of the town walls are still preserved in the 'D' shape of the town centre, which retains its medieval street plan. The town is compact and, being on the level, is easy to walk around.
This is the fifth part of our UK trip. In this segment of the trip we visited York, Cheltenham, Castle Combe, Avebury, Stone Henge, Devizes and Bath.

Continuing the development of Mikesndbs we take on the task of exploring four fascinating locations within Wiltshire (around 100 miles from my home location) The youngest of which is well over 900 years! First of all Avebury to see the henge and stones. Followed by Silbury Hill then on to West Kennet Long Barrow. These locations are all within a few miles of each other and can easily be visited on one day! Lastly we head off to see the Big Belly Oak off the A346. Coordinates for each location are given in the film, pleased use the pause function to review these. The only one not given is the actual location of the oak, this is: 51 23 28.9 N / 1 41 44.0 W Coordinates taken from my Garmin satnav at the time. The Wessex Ridgeway is a 137 mile long distance footpath between Marlborough in Wiltshire and Lyme Regis in Dorset. This video shows my walk along the 10.5 mile section of the path between Avebury and Devizes in Wiltshire. Note that this is the WESSEX Ridgeway, not the Ridgeway National Trail, although the two paths do cross near Avebury (not in this video). The Wessex Ridgeway is considerably more strenuous than the Ridgeway National Trail and route finding is more intricate. The walk took place in sunny weather on Tuesday 23 June 2015.

Places to see in ( Westbury - UK ) Westbury is a town and civil parish in the west of the English county of Wiltshire, most famous for the Westbury White Horse. The most likely origin of the West- in Westbury is simply that the town is near the western edge of the county of Wiltshire, the bounds of which have been much the same since the Anglo-Saxon period. Westbury is located in the far west of Wiltshire, close to the border with Somerset. It lies at the northwestern edge of Salisbury Plain, 18 miles (29 km) southeast of the city of Bath, approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south of the county town of Trowbridge and 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north of the garrison town of Warminster. Other nearby towns and cities include Frome, Devizes, Salisbury and Bristol. Nearby villages include Bratton, Chapman...

Places to see in ( Trowbridge - UK ) Trowbridge is the county town of Wiltshire, England on the River Biss in the west of the county, 8 miles south east of Bath, Somerset, from which it is separated by the Mendip Hills, which rise 3 miles to the west. Long a market town, the Kennet and Avon canal runs to the north of Trowbridge and played an instrumental part in the town's development as it enabled coal to be transported from the Somerset Coalfield and so marked the advent of steam-powered manufacturing in woollen cloth mills. The town of Trowbridge was foremost producer of this mainstay of contemporary clothing and blankets in south west England in the late 18th and early 19th centuries by which time it held the nickname "The Manchester of the West". The parish encompasses the settleme...

I met a girl and we ran away
I swore I'd make her happy every day
And how I made her cry
Two faces have i
Sometimes mister I feel sunny and wild
Lord I love to see my baby smile
Then dark clouds come rolling by
Two faces have i
One that laughs one that cries
One says hello one says goodbye
One does things I don't understand
Makes me feel like half a man
At night I get down on my knees and pray
Our love will make that other man go away
But hell never say goodbye
Two faces have i
Last night as I kissed you neath the willow tree
He swore he'd take your love away from me
He said our life was just a lie
And two faces have i
