The 86 is a series of sports cars jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru and solely manufactured by the latter. It features a boxer engine, front mid-engine, rear wheel drive drivetrain and 2+2 seating.
It is sold worldwide under three different brands with respective model names:
The development code of this vehicle is 086A and its main production names 86 (pronounced "eight-six" or Hachi-Roku (ハチロク) in Japanese, but more commonly pronounced as "eighty-six") or GT86, reference historic Toyota front engined and rear-wheel drive sports coupés and hatchbacks, in the form of:
Carbon-fiber–reinforced polymer, carbon-fiber–reinforced plastic or carbon-fiber–reinforced thermoplastic (CFRP, CRP, CFRTP or often simply carbon fiber, or even carbon), is an extremely strong and light fiber-reinforced plastic which contains carbon fibers. The spelling 'fibre' is common in British Commonwealth countries.
CFRPs can be expensive to produce but are commonly used wherever high strength-to-weight ratio and rigidity are required, such as aerospace, automotive and civil engineering, sports goods and an increasing number of other consumer and technical applications.
The binding polymer is often a thermoset resin such as epoxy, but other thermoset or thermoplastic polymers, such as polyester, vinyl ester or nylon, are sometimes used. The composite may contain other fibers, such as an aramid (e.g. Kevlar, Twaron), aluminium, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) or glass fibers, as well as carbon fiber. The properties of the final CFRP product can also be affected by the type of additives introduced to the binding matrix (the resin). The most frequent additive is silica, but other additives such as rubber and carbon nanotubes can be used. The material is also referred to as graphite-reinforced polymer or graphite fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP is less common, as it clashes with glass-(fiber)-reinforced polymer). In product advertisements, it is sometimes referred to simply as graphite fiber for short.

Great small sports car with excellent handling and an awesome look! Dark blue with the 6 speed automatic transmission. The FR-S is a comparable car to my 2.0 Genesis Coupe, and I really do like this car a lot. It has an extremely sporty interior and a very low center of gravity.

This 2014 Scion FR-S is set up to be a well rounded, fun daily driver in Los Angeles. It has a Jackson Racing supercharger kit good for 280 WHP and 220 lb/ft at the wheels, which is just enough to make the lightweight FR-S feel quick. It has a host of complimentary handling, stopping, and chassis mods, but what makes this FRS different is that it's the first time Matt's reviewed an Automatic car. Turns out, the Automatic is very good when driven hard! Check out the FRS on Wheelwell! https://goo.gl/elCgXc

Variations of this car (including the BRZ) have been featured on our show against its many price competitors. It has proven to be a favorite. So when Todd went looking for a fairly recent used car, he found this FR-S in his budget. This begins a series of long-term discussions of tuning and living with this car, and Paul wishing Todd had gotten something else.
