Sprinter Sacre's 2016 Champion Chase success generated a level of bedlam previously unseen at the Cheltenham Festival.

His matchless redemptive story reaching its heady climax as racing's public seemingly willed the impossible, possible. Legendary status was already assured yet it was Sprinter Sacre's return from the brink, his battle with adversity that has taken this horse of the ages into such rarefied territory.

Drawing on the unique resources of the Racing Post, including many previously unseen photos, an extraordinary tale is told of a racehorse whose incredible looks are, for once, matched by his achievements. Introduced to fences in 2011, he soon built an aura of invincibility that all presumed would last for years to come, but, in December 2013 that spectacularly vanished as the tribulation of atrial fibrillation reared its head.

While he battled through, his greatest moments were in his past. Despite the patience and expertise of trainer Nicky Henderson and vet Celia Marr, whose ultrasound and ECG readings are here to see, the spark of brilliance had fizzled out.

Then in late 2015 that spark flickered into life before setting the sporting world alight as his story reached its most epic crescendo.

A fine example of Brough Scott's ability to bring sporting figures (human and equine) to life. The original words, of course, are those of the Racing Post, but Scott has marshaled them brilliantly to bring the story to life. The book is enhanced throughout by some wonderful photography. Overall, a fitting tribute to the horse who is probably the best steeplechaser we have seen since the days of Arkle.

While old racegoers will forever tell us tales about the Arkles and Brigadier Gerards of the racing world, us slightly younger ones dont have it bad at all. We have been blessed to see the likes of Sea the Stars, Frankels, Kauto Stars, Denmans, Big Bucks just to name a few; and thank god the Racing Post took it upon them to publish a book about a few of those. Sprinter Sacre is the latest but hopefully by no means the last book publsihed in this mould: old Racing Post articles and wonderful photos combined by a few bridging words - voilá - there is your detailed history of any given horse. One could argue that writing a story after a horses career from scrach might give the reader a completely different insight, but then again, this is a nice way to go down memory lane and recall all the great moments you spent watching a favorite horse and cheering it home to win. Given that all the articles have been published in the RP along the years, there is not much new to learn for the real fanatic fan, but loads of facts to gain if you are not a daily reader.
As mentioned these books - and this book too - are illustrated with splendit photos mostly taken by the one and only Edward Whitaker, and are nearly worth the purchase alone.
As presents for racing fans come, you cant go wrong with this one !
