South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.

Mine unions say there has been little improvement since then. South Africa's economy has long been driven by mining but production has dropped over the decades. Mark Lowen was given rare access into a gold mine to see what conditions are like and to follow the mining process
Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked...

“Visions of Gold” is a short color film on “Gold! The thread from which we weave our dreams! The key to stability!” Produced by South African film maker Emil Nofal in the mid-1960s, the film opens with rows of gold bars as the narrator Joe Stewardson explains how (in1 885) itinerant prospectors George Walker, along with George Harrison, stumbled on surface outcrops of gold-rich conglomerate on an old farm near the Witwatersrand basin —land that is now near the center of Johannesburg. (Both men quickly sold their claims for the equivalent of a few hundred dollars. Today, the gold fields in the region are worth billions.) From across the world, prospectors descended on South Africa in search of gold, as we see throngs of prospectors and opportunists starting at mark 02:45. Spurred on by visi...

South Africa's TauTona mine, real life alchemy, and Halicephalobus Mephisto. Footage from the 2012 documentary, "Down to the Earth's Core". It's a journey fraught with danger. One thousand feet down we find ourselves inside one of the planet's most volatile places - the San Andreas Fault. In a single gold mine in South Africa, an expected $2.2 billion worth of gold can still be extracted from just one dump site's waste material. Using water cannons and chemical treatements, a single mine can hope to extract about 3 grams in every tonne. It may not sound like much but if there is 140 million tonnes of waste lying around - the numbers start adding up. High prices means all the effort that goes into sourcing the precious metal may well be worth it. Al Jazeera's Tania Page reports from Johannesburg.
South Africa's economy made a strong turnaround in the second quarter of the year, putting concerns of a recession to rest for the time being. The first quarter was dismal with a -1.2% contraction, and that stood in stark contrast to Q2's growth of 3.3%. That was largely driven by a strong rebound in mining and manufacturing, with both sectors growing by over 8%. South Africa's exports remained healthy. It wasn't all rosy though. Agriculture, forestry and fishing declined for the sixth consecutive quarter due to the prolonged drought. On an annual basis, South Africa's still in the ICU, with the economy growing at just 0.6%.

The Foreign exchange market is the biggest financial market in the world. At least four trillion dollars is traded on currency markets on a daily basis. Shezi now wants to empower other young South Africans to do the same. Sumitra Nydoo caught up with him.

The newly produced series ‘Aid or Trade?’ shows that aid is no longer about transferring money or shipping goods. But at a dark time for the world economy, Africa’s progress is a reminder of the transformative promise of growth.' This 5 episode-series 'Aid or Trade?' (5 x 14 minutes) shows an optimistic and nuanced perspective and portrays successful combinations and collaborations. The program highlights high-potential or successful initiatives: often collaboration between NGO’s, private, and...

Since its inception in 1986, Burning Man has been a lightning rod for criticism from a wide variety of political, personal and even internal factions. Despite this, the event has grown annually every year and now boasts international regional events that are growing at a similar pace. Link to same-sex behaviour in animals video: https://vimeo.com/129345008 From an evolutionary viewpoint, homosexuality is a puzzle because same-sex relationships have no or few offspring. In this video, we examine examples of social functions of homosexual activities in humans. Homosexual behaviour can, just like heterosexual behaviour, help in the formation of alliances. For example, in the Lovedu, the Venda, the Zulu, and the Tonga, women acquire wives of their own to free themselves from domestic duties (Weir 2006). Same-sex relationships also help individuals survive and subsequently reproduce. In some tribes in Melanesia, for example, younger men establish relationships with older men to improve their access to food (Herdt 1993). It has also been proposed that same-sex relationships ...
For the third successful year in a row the Franschhoek Groot Drakenstein mountain range provided a dramatic Cape backdrop to what has fast become an annual institution – the spectacular Franschhoek Oesfees on the Solms-Delta wine estate – a salute to the end of the harvest, and a joyous celebration of uniquely Cape food, wine, music, song and dance. This was not the South Africa of petty tabloid tensions, but a free-spirited tribute to a shared love of culture that saw local farm workers and farm owners dancing shoulder to shoulder with tourists and VIP guests in a colourful embrace of diversity, with Solms-Delta’s teasingly-named wines like Langarm, Lekkerwijn, Hiervandaan and Cape Jazz Shiraz flowing alongside the lekker Kaapsekos. The decriminalization of marijuana could contribute to improved public health. That's according to South Africas Central Drug Authority. The Authority argues in their medical journal that criminalization has had little impact on how people use the drug. But opponents fear crime connected to drug abuse and marijuana users graduating to harder drugs. CCTV's Yolisa Njamela has the story

A medical laboratory newly opened in Cape Town is set to revolutionize the medical training field by giving trainees virtual, hands-on experience. A multi-million-dollar collaboration between Stellenbosch University and global tech firm Medtronic, the SUNSkill clinical simulation laboratory aims to cut down on the often time-consuming live theatre training, immersing healthcare professionals into the virtual world. Arriving in the Victoria West area on our first day of our timelapse trip to the Karoo South Africa, we were anxious to scout some locations to get shooting as soon as possible. It was now evident that there was indeed a heatwave passing through the country... As soon as we decided where to shoot first, we didn’t waste any time to unpack our equipment. I don’t think we realized just how much gear we had until we started hiking up these rocky hills, solar panel and all! It took several hikes to get everything up to the spot where we wanted to shoot. And once the shooting started, it didn’t stop. We had two cameras firing away, mostly one on a Shukuma DOLLY and one on a Shukuma MINI. Much planning is required for any timelapse shots, keeping various factors in consideration and this w...

A informational video about South Africa.
Travel video about destination South-Africa. Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered there, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africa’s tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the city’s narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africa’s most exquisite landmarks, it contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the city’s past surface mining that gave rise to the country’s massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as the history of Africa’s native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. In contrast to Johannesburg, ...

http://www.TheExpeditioner.com Kruger National Park in South Africa is one of the world's best places for wildlife viewing. In this video I go in search of lion, while also catching glimpses of giraffes, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, hyenas, and baboons.
In Fall of 2009, I hunted black wildebeest in Africa in order to again "meet my meat." My wonderful guide was Chris Bolton, of Zungah Safaris, in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After the hunt, we transported the meat to a well-known Cape Town Chef, Pete Goff, of The Kitchen Cowboys. This was a very emotional experience for me and my friend, Sonja Kroop, who was shooting most of the footage. We had not anticipated the hunt nor filming, when we arrived to visit a friend in Cape Town, so the footage quality is old mini-dv, not high quality HD. Some viewers may find this to be GRAPHIC CONTENT, as it shows the killing of an animal for food.
13 x 24min Travel Series "Take a walk on the wild side and see what lies...below" Below the Belt is the massive South African hit 13x 24min, "cheeky adult variety series" , hosted by the "world famous" Baroness Coral von Reefenhausen, the program takes an irreverent and risqué look at sex, and alternative culture in South Africa. The Baroness tackles subjects including pornography, S&M;, swinging, prostitution, traditional African sex therapies, gay nightlife and other topics 'hidden' in the underworlds of Johannesburg and beautiful Cape Town. Touring in her limo (driven by Gino, her stud driver and cohort) from nudist beaches to pick-up joints, the Baroness chats to ordinary people she encounters; both those in search of a good time as well as those that provide these services. She ask...
After my safari in South Africa I hitched a ride to Tofo, Mozambique, a sleepy fishing village on the Indian Ocean known for its great beaches and amazing diving. In this video I head underwater to check out the local population of manta rays, whale sharks, and coral life; meet up with some new friends who make their living selling art in town; and recuperate from a bout of malaria I unfortunately caught while there.
This is the fourth video in the series to promote responsible tourism in South Africa. From our first destination, Cape Town. We interview Jennifer Aston, from WHL (http://www.southafricahotel-link.com/) and ask her how she views the position of responsible tourism in South Africa, and any practical tips she can provide to help people to reduce their negative impact. We then meet with a local friend and tour guide (Siviwe Mbinda) for walking tour around Langa - the first black township in Cape Town. He explains the history from apartheid to current day, and how tourism has helped benefit the local community. We even share a beer and watch a soccer game in a shebeen with the locals. In South Africa the word ‘township’ refers to a residential area for black Africans and Coloureds that segr...
I traveled to Kruger National Park, South Africa with the Board of Directors & Scientists from the Palm Beach Zoo, FL. In this video clip, Frankie, our guide from Tinga Lodge, leads us on an early morning (6 am) game drive. We had the unexpected pleasure to encounter LIONS! We chose to travel to South Africa in the middle of winter (which was freezing for us South Floridians) but best for viewing wildlife due to the lack of foliage. This was a science mission since the Palm Beach Zoo seeks to expand it's African wildlife collection. National Geographic has spoiled all of us with never before scenes of wildlife encounters with photographers camped out in the wild for weeks or months. We were giddy with exhilaration just to be in Africa and get ANY encounters! Driving through the Afri...

This is the third video in the series to promote responsible tourism in South Africa. From our first destination, Cape Town. We meet with a local friend and tour guide (Shaqir Erasmus) for a local breakfast and hike up Lion's Head (Part of the Table Mountain National Park). From a geographical and natural perspective, he explains the wildlife, scenery and history. From the times of when the Khoikhoi (indigenous peoples who inhabited the area since the 5th Century AD) ran their cattle along the tracks of the mountain, to the endangered floral species such as the Silver Tree. My safari guides thought I was nuts taking thousands of photos each day so hopefully now they will understand... This was my first trip to anywhere in the continent and it was eye opening. There are few things more thrilling than being woken up at 5:30am to the sounds of lions outside your tent. I will be back South Africa. This video was shot and edited by Tyler Fairbank. Licensing, project quotes or questions please contact me at Tyler@lightowlproductions.com www.tylerfairbank.com Thank you to Mike and Kim for arranging this trip and to everyone at Southern Destinations and MORE Experiences. In the heart of the African bush, time-lapse photographers Drew Geraci and Andrew Breese, trek across the golden landscape to capture a single tree, the Acacia. The mission of this trip was to showcase the Acacia in as many different environmental compositions as possible (within a 3 day window). This footage is part behind-the-scenes and actual production shots that will be used in PBS's 'Nature' as a new show introduction. Our journey started with an 18 hour plane ride to Johannesburg, South Africa, and continued with a 6 hour drive to Pongola, where we arrived at a private game reserve (Kwazulu). The clock was ticking for us to find the 'perfect' tree so we set out at early dawn to scout and snap a few time-lapse shots in the process. We were greeted by all types of animals; lions, ze...

"When the world comes together at an event like the FIFA World Cup 2010, there’s typically more than just a trophy at stake. In South Africa, the country hosting this year’s tournament, race relations surely stand out as one of the more complex issues. In this stop-motion short, titled Go South Africa!, the topic is examined in a morality tale involving soccer balls. The short was directed by Robbert-Jan Vos, and art directed and animated by Renske Mijnheer." We jump above the rocks, we climb up towards the highest points. We yell into the valley and we're stunned by the scenic views, the culture and its people. We are here – at the other side of the world. It’s the incredible expanses, the wind that clears your head. It is impossible not to feel this moment of letting go. What we have found is an authentic country which is marked by its history and rich of its beauty. For two weeks we have chased the world in South Africa but in our minds we never really left. This video is about my recent trip to South Africa. It was always at the top of my list to visit this beautiful country, and it exceeded all my expectations. The people made us feel very welcome, the landscape is gorgeous and the nature so diverse. In three weeks we traveled more than 3,000 kilometers, from Cape Town to Johannesburg. All captured in 4K with my new Panasonic GH4. Enjoy! For photo's please visit: https://www.flickr.com/photos/joren91/sets/72157654867743602

Once I was anothers lover
Now I am my own
Trying to call myself a brother
Living here alone
Maybe if you came to see me
Wishing I wasn't so blind
Sitting here thinking to be free
Maybe we'd all change our mind
She is kind and beautiful
I am young and strong
We have never met each other
But it can't be long
Oft' I have slept by her window
Often I whisper her name
And wonder that words in the wind blow
