Frank Soo is in many ways the forgotten man of twentieth century football. In his time he was a household name, his life chronicled by national newspapers in Britain and, on occasions, around the world. He had a successful club football career, playing for many years alongside Stanley Matthews for Stoke City. He played for England nine times and captained the RAF team during the Second World War. He appeared as a guest player for Everton, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Brentford and Millwall, and after the war played for Leicester City, Luton Town and Chelmsford City. His later career as a football manager, mainly in Scandinavia, included spells as the coach of both Norway and Sweden and he took Djurgårdens IF to the top of the Allsvenskan, the highest football league in Sweden. Among the many clubs he managed were the Italian side Padova, AIK in Sweden and Scunthorpe United. A pioneer in many ways, Frank Soo was the first person from a Chinese or Asian background to play for England and remains the only one to this day. Whatever the reasons for Frank Soo's disappearance from the narrative of football history, this book is an attempt to rekindle interest in a significant figure who was a hugely admired and skilful footballer, a charming and charismatic man, and a role model for any aspiring young player, now as much as he was during his lifetime.

an enjoyable read about a good player who appears to have been forgotten from the history of the game. He lived and breathed the game and expected the same from his players when he was a Manager. A veey good book I would recommend it to anyone interested in players from the past

Don't think it's particularly well written, seems to be large amounts of speculation about things in the early chapters (possibly because of the lack of information) so it has, so far, been an ordinary read.

An interesting, inspiring and sad story. One which I had ignorantly never heard of before, but I am so glad to have been enlightened. A player who was way ahead of his time and should’ve been treated better both domestically and nationally. It is a great shame he and his story is not well known as he serves not only as an inspiration to budding young footballers but also those of Asian background or heritage. Susan does a fantastic job of finding, researching and recounting the many memories and stories of Frankie, detailing his background, playing career and managerial career, using references to text originating from that time period. It is a great travesty that so much information around this time was likely not documented and so we never get a true reflection as to just how great this players were. However, the accounts told in the book prove that Frankie was held in high regard and is someone who unequivocally talented at that time. Thoroughly enjoyed this
