THE CROSS SPORTS BOOK AWARD AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF THE YEAR The Sunday Times bestseller is 'brilliant, gripping, beautifully written, real,' says Jonathan Northcroft. So, you think you know Joey Barton. Think again. No Nonsense is a game-changing autobiography which will redefine the most fascinating figure in British football. It is the raw yet redemptive story of a man shaped by rejection and the consequences of his mistakes. He has represented England, and been a pivotal player for Manchester City, Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, Marseille, Burnley and Glasgow Rangers, but his career has featured recurring controversy. The low point of being sent to prison for assault in 2008 proved to be the catalyst for the re-evaluation of his life. No Nonsense reflects Barton's character it is candid, challenging, entertaining and intelligent. He does not spare himself, in revealing the formative influences of a tough upbringing in Liverpool, and gives a survivor s insight into a game which, to use his phrase, 'eats people alive'. The book is emotionally driven, and explains how he has redirected his energies since the birth of his children. In addition to dealing with his past, he expands on his plans for the future. The millions who follow his commentaries on social media, and those who witnessed him on BBC s Question Time, will be given another reason to pause, and look beyond the caricature.'Compelling' Donald McRae, Guardian 'Brilliant' Matt Lawton, Daily Mail

Product description

Review

'Barton's compelling autobiography... probes the dark undertow of his past' --Donald McRae, Guardian

'The book is brilliant and in many ways as No Nonsense as the title claims' --Matt Lawton, Daily Mail

'Book of revelations: No Nonsense is, to all intents and purposes, Joey Barton: The Director's Cut. Unshackled from the limitations of Twitter's 140 characters, expanded and coloured in with the help of an articulate ghost writer, Michael Calvin. Together they lay waste to the "superficial bollocks" of the modern game' --When Saturday Comes

There are few stories that could be written about Joey Barton that haven't already been sensationalised in the tabloids. This one, coming directly from the man himself, is written with painful honesty and a bravery that matches his on field persona.

The story starts with a visit to an incarcerated friend, who had been sentenced for manslaughter after a brawl, in an opening that could so easily have been the fate of Barton himself. There then follows a deeply personal account of his family life and early surroundings that is not for the faint of heart. In particular, Barton's exposure to violence as a youngster makes for an unsettling read.

He documents his fight to make it as a pro despite being written off early as too small and rejected by his boyhood team, Everton before laying bare his experiences in English and French football. His battle with alcohol and personal demons are explored with increasing self-awareness after his involvement with the Sporting Chance clinic prior to relapsing and suffering the indignity of a prison sentence.

Despite his notoriety, he expresses his desire to tackle his problems head-on with the help of his mentor Pete Kay. His love for his children brings a new perspective, and even empathy.

From the book it is often clear that Barton's passion to win football matches brings himself into conflict with friend and foe alike and he appears to feel almost too responsible at times. In several instances his priority seems to be the good of the team at the expense of personal relationships until those relationships become so sour that breakaway is inevitable. It's an all-or-nothing approach that can be both extremely productive, such as securing QPR's promotion or very destructive.

The book is both very entertaining - in places being laced with his trademark acerbic wit - and fascinating, as the inner workings of the football world are revealed.

Overall the book is extremely well written and shines a light on a troubled professional who has often been dehumanised, not only by his own alcohol-fuelled behaviour, but also by media vampires as George Best and Paul Gascoigne before him.

I've never particularly liked Joey Barton and after reading this autobiography this is still the case. However I must admit that this book makes for compelling reading and that Barton comes across as quite intelligent. The book highlights how Barton grew up in a very tough Liverpool housing estate and quite a few of his family and friends got themselves involved in violence and other criminal activity as he was growing up. Barton was taught that signs of weakness would be punished and he developed a very competitive and aggressive manner which he brought into the world of football. This aggression, especially when coupled with alcohol, often led to him committing psychotic acts of violence on and off the pitch. The book also highlights his lack of deference to and respect for authority, which held back his footballing career and led to his exit from quite a few football clubs. He is outspoken and thinks he knows best, however he often forgets his place in the social pecking order. Barton's opinions and views are intelligent enough and frequently astute, but they are clouded by his acts of savagery ,one of which ended up in him being sent to jail. Barton may see himself as resilient, analytical, competitive ,articulate and determined but this can also be viewed as single mindedness, aggression, selfishness and arrogance. Barton is a flawed character who has a big opinion of himself. Not my kind of person, but I nonetheless enjoyed this fascinating book. Im not sure if he would make a good coach or manager as his personality would antagonise more people than it would endear. Maybe a career in punditry might be more apposite for this abrasive ,opinionated but clever character.

Joey Barton is an interesting and controversial character, there is nothing that you have not heard about in the press that appears in the book. However hearing Joey's version of events is quiet interesting as his is stories about other footballers. The constant references to how tough his boyhood town, I have no doubt they were however they are a little repetitive. Joey comes across as a man who has many demons which on occasion he struggles to contain. You can see how he grows up and matures throughout the book which is pleasing to see. Summary: A good holiday read where you can skip a few pages and chapters without losing anything and still read about the main events.

First off, if you dislike Joey then this is definitely not the book for you - its an autobiography, there is going to a lot of pro-Joey in there. Secondly, if you want to hear about his career there are some fantastically honest stories that you wont ever find in another autobiography, but there are not many of them. I found it was a great insight into some of the forces that shaped him, how he hit the lows, his constant struggle to make himself a better person, and ultimately his inability to see that his behaviour was often unjustified (although you cant help feeling in some cases you might have done a very similar thing). From a pure footballing point of view, if you are the type of kid who is determined to be a footballer at all costs, Joey shows you an insight into just how determined you need to be to achieve it. I've never been a fan of his, but I came away with a lot of sympathy for a guy who is trying every day to make himself a better person. Football is one the worst working environments possible for a man of his temperament. Perhaps when he is retired he will finally gain control of his inner demons.

Not always pleasant to read, and that's the way it should be. Can't always be pretty stories of trophies and goals. Honest, accountable and ultimately positive. He is still succeeding in football and has made more mistakes since this update. Hopefully he can move on now as this is an intelligent read from someone who should still have plenty to offer.
