Hutchy: Miracle Man Hardcover – 17 Oct. 2016

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 698 ratings

Ian Hutchinson - 'Hutchy' to his many thousands of fans - is a motorcycle racer like few others. A road racer to the core, he has enjoyed spectacular success at the Isle of Man TT, the North West 200 and the Ulster Grand Prix, but his own story goes far beyond even those triumphs. In the summer of 2010, Hutchy set the record for most wins in a single Isle of Man TT festival - five in all - having already won the Supersport class at the North West 200 in Northern Ireland. Then disaster struck. At a British Supersport round in September that year, he crashed heavily after being struck by another rider's machine, breaking his left leg so badly that at one stage it was feared it might have to be amputated. After many surgical operations and a long period of recovery, he fractured the same leg in 2012 while practising exhibition-riding for a motorycle show in London. Yet not even these disasters could keep the Yorkshireman from racing. After modifications to the gear levers and rear brakes on his race machines, he went out and won the 2013 Macau Grand Prix. Two years later saw an even more staggering return to form, when he secured three wins, a second and a third place at the 2015 Isle of Man TT, also winning the Joey Dunlop TT Championship Trophy for that year. Hutchy: Miracle Man is a book not only for fans of motorcycle road racing, but for anyone interested in the life and career of a brilliant rider and an extraordinarily brave and enduring man, a hugely popular figure not just for his achievements, but for his unassuming modesty, kindness and humour.

About the Author

IAN HUTCHINSON'S co-author, Ted Macauley, is a journalist, columnist and broadcaster, and the author of twelve books, most of them on his favourite sport motorcycle racing. He was the legendary Mike Hailwood's manager and organiser of the great man s historic and unforgettable winning comeback at the Isle of Man TT in 1978 and again on his successful return in 1979.

Macauley was awarded the much-prized Seagrave Medal by the Royal Automobile Club, the first journalist to have been so honoured, for his part in Mike the Bike s sensational return to the TT, aged thirty-nine and after an eleven-year absence from the dangerous Mountain Circuit. He was also voted Journalist of the Year.

He is currently F1 writer for the Daily Star Sunday and columnist for Gulf News Dubai after a long term as, first, Motor Cycle Grand Prix specialist, then Formula One reporter and, finally, Chief Sports Feature Writer for the Daily Mirror.

Really good book about Hutchy

The book arrived in perfect condition, thank you. Sadly, the content was not up to scratch. Ian Hutchinson is a hero of mine but I don't recall being as disillusioned with a book as this. Ghost writing was absolutely dreadful. There are dozens of road racing books available, some are fantastic reads, "That Near Death Thing" and "Road Racer", the Michael Dunlop biography, being two of the most outstanding. Please Ian, next time give Ted Macauley a miss.

I'd been looking forward to reading this book after seeing Ian race at the Ulster/NW. I admire him for his grit and complete determination in the face of a very long road of challenge. I enjoyed the book but would have enjoyed it more had it been narrated by Ian throughout. A better sense of Ian's personality/opinions would have been welcome.

As a fan of bike racing and the TT I knew of Hutchy from his race wins and the horrific accident that nearly cost him his leg and career. As a biker I also wanted to know what drove him to get back on the bike again and was
how again he was able to top the podium after 5years of recovery. This book gives us insight into the incredible desire and iron like will of Ian to remain a racer and what it means to him, the passion for racing and the satisfaction of winning after so much sacrifice. Read, enjoy, and prepare to be inspired.

The format of the book, brings in "testimonials" of other people of "how Good he is" . Which becomes annoying as its almost trying to validate the book itself .
He is obviously, very taleneted and a great rider, who has had some really bad events in his career, but he comes across as arrogant (and to be fair he does make ref to this when talking about fellow riders both now and historically) so I didnt feel I came away from knowing anything you didn't already expect . Nothing personal really comes out from it ... If you want a good motorcycling book, read John McGuinness's Built for Speed which I read just before this one, maybe If id read this one first, but then agian, maybe McPint sets high standards not only in racing .,

This was a bit of a surprise read for me. I'm not heavily in to motorbike racing, although I have been riding motorbikes for over 40 years. But this was a pleasant read, and I expected young Hutchy to be ''up his own back end'' with conceit and ''when I did this, that or the other''. But nope. He appears to be a well adjusted guy who's feet are firmly on the floor (unless he's falling off and crashing again, in that case, his feet are up in the air)

Followed Hutchy's career for many years now and this book provides a brilliant insight into the struggles he has overcome with horrific injuries and finding last minute dot .com rides to maintain his hunger for success. He doesn't dwell too much on his Silverstone crash injury which would normally have put an end to the career of any other racer, but more on his fight to get back on two wheels and keep stacking the wins and trophies up again. Overall, a good interesting read.
