Netflix pranks viewers with mundane livestream narrated by Will Arnett

Netflix has finally proved it can get its viewers to watch anything - including the inside of a refrigerator.

Over the weekend, the streaming giant announced it was launching a new channel called Netflix Live.

Netflix's epic April Fools Day prank

Audiences tuned in en masse to watch a new experience only to find out the show was cancelled after only 48 minutes.

But when viewers tuned in, they weren't greeted by an impressive set or a panel of comedians ready to throw jokes at each other.

Instead, they were shown what appeared to be the most mundane parts of the Netflix office. And what's more, the whole thing was narrated in real-time by Bojack Horseman star Will Arnett.

"You never realise that the only thing missing in your life is Will Arnett narrating a toaster until you've seen it," the company told its overexcited (and sometimes downright disappointed) Facebook fans.

"That slow mo on the fax machine... We may be jumping the gun here but if this doesn't land the Emmy for Best Drama then there's something drastically wrong with the whole system."

The whole thing was an April Fool's gag, of course, but that didn't stop people from flocking to their laptops and TVs to watch a burrito cooking in a microwave.

At one point, the camera even cuts to toast jumping out of a toaster in slow motion.

"It's cookin'," Arnett said. "Like a little wheat baby coming to full term."

But the April Fool's gag was never designed to give people bedsores Game of Thrones style, with the livestream coming to an end after just 48 minutes.

When subscribers who were late to the party attempted to watch the program, they were greeted with a message saying Netflix Live had been cancelled.

"We miscalculated the number of people who like to binge-watch microwaves," the message read. "Dave from analytics is in trouble."

But that didn't stop countless people running with the gag. Despite being cancelled, Netflix Live snapped up hundreds of tongue-in-cheek reviews.

"I have no words to describe it," one person wrote. "This programme is at the forefront of reality TV

"Horrible burrito microwaving technique," an other person joked. "I've seen better. Don't waste your time."

The now 'cancelled' Netflix Live wasn't the only show to jump in on the April Fool's action over the weekend. Adult cartoon Rick and Morty made the first episode of its highly-anticipated third season available to stream on Adultswim.

However, there was a catch - the episode was only available in certain locations, and appeared in a continuous loop so that viewers had to tune in at exactly the right moment to watch the new episode from the beginning.
