In this episode of Sounding Off we are talking with Film Composer Mark Isham. Mark will tell you everything you need to know about the job of being a Film Composer. From the ideas to all the technology associated with it DAW, Temp Music, Orchestration and the Recording and Mixing process.

It was an accidental series of events that brought Isham into the world of film music. Already an established performer and recording artist, he began to experiment with electronic music. In 1983, Isham released his solo debut album Vapor Drawings. He circulated a demo intended for ECM Records, but fortuitously caught the attention of film director Carroll Ballard. Ballard was searching for a new sound for a project and was impressed by Isham’s unique music and hired him to compose the score for Disney’s critically acclaimed film Never Cry Wolf.
While developing as a film composer, Mark Isham continued to prosper and gain notoriety for his work in electronic and new age. He won a Grammy for his Virgin Records release, Mark Isham and Grammy nominations for his albums Castalia and Tibet. Although honored in the electronic and new age genres, Isham is perhaps most celebrated for his contributions to jazz. He has collaborated and performed with jazz legends including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Bobby McFerrin. Mark Isham’s jazz releases have received critical-acclaim: Blue Sun was included in Downbeat’s “Top 100 Jazz Albums of the Decade;” and The London Times named Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project “Best Jazz Album.″
The sought-after composer continues to demonstrate his diverse musical voice in over one-hundred film and TV scores including Eight Below, The Cooler, Blade, Nell, The Secret Life of Bees, in addition to A River Runs Through It and Men of Honor both resulting in Grammy nominations. Other credits include Warrior, Dolphin Tale, Point Break and the Jackie Robinson biopic 42. Isham’s suite from the film 42 was premiered by the New York Philharmonic during the MLB Sandy Relief Concert in Central Park and played at Dodger stadium on “Jackie Robinson Day.” Currently, in addition to scoring his sixth season of ABC’s hit series Once Upon a Time, he also scores Oscar-winner John Ridley’s ABC’s drama American Crime. Directors constantly return to Isham on new projects. The composer reunites with director Gavin O’Connor for the upcoming film The Accountant starring Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick and with director Scott Hicks’ on the upcoming feature Fallen. Isham is also working with first time director, animation veteran Christopher Jenkins (The Lion King, Aladdin) on the upcoming animated film Duck Duck Goose.

Mark Isham’s collective contributions to the film music community was recognized by his peers when he was awarded the highest honor for a composer by The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), the prestigious Henry Mancini Career Achievement Award for musical excellence. Mark Isham
Mark Ware Isham (born September 7, 1951) is an American trumpeter, synthesist, and film composer. He works in a variety of genres, including jazz, electronic, and film. He is responsible for contributing the scores of nearly one hundred films.
Life and career
Isham was born in New York City, the son of Patricia (née Hammond), a violinist, and Howard Fuller Isham, a Professor of Humanities.
His discography is extensive and varied, including with his participation with units like Group 87, and David Torn's Cloud About Mercury project, and sessions with people like Joni Mitchell, Terry Bozzio, Bill Bruford, XTC, and Doug Lunn.
Isham is a Scientologist. He is married to Donna Isham.

Quartz Composer
Quartz Composer is a node-based visual programming language provided as part of the Xcode development environment in Mac OS X for processing and rendering graphical data.
Quartz Composer uses OpenGL (including GLSL), OpenCL (only in Mac OS X 10.6 and later), Core Image, Core Video, JavaScript, and other technologies to build an API and a developer tool around a simple visual programming paradigm. Apple has embedded Quartz technologies deeply into the operating system. Compositions created in Quartz Composer can be played standalone in any QuickTime-aware application (although only on Mac OS X 10.4 and later), as a system Screen Saver, as an iTunes Visualizer, from inside the Quartz Composer application, or can be embedded into a Cocoa or Carbon application via supplied user interface widgets. Because Quartz Composer makes extensive use of hardware acceleration and pixel shaders, it is recommended to have a graphics card with at least 32 MB of memory. While Quartz Composer is included with the iPhone SDK, as of December 2015 there is no way of running Quartz Compositions on iOS devices.

Video game music
Video game music is the soundtrack or background music accompanying video games. Originally limited to simple melodies by early sound synthesizer technology, video game music has grown to include the same breadth and complexity associated with television and movie soundtracks. While simple synthesizer pieces are still common, game music now can include full orchestral pieces and licensed popular music. Video games can now also generate or alter their soundtrack based on the player's current actions or situation, such as indicating missed actions in rhythm games.
Beginning in the early 2000s, it became increasingly common for video game soundtracks to be commercially sold or performed in concerts that focus on video game music. The early limitations on video game music also inspired the style of music known as chiptunes that use the original simple melodic styles, sometimes sampled directly from classic games, with more complex patterns or mixed with the traditional music styles.

Video game
A video game is an electronic game that involves human interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device such as a TV screen or computer monitor. The word video in video game traditionally referred to a raster display device, but it now implies any type of display device that can produce two- or three-dimensional images. Video games are sometimes believed to be a form of art, but this designation is controversial.
The electronic systems used to play video games are known as platforms; examples of these are personal computers and video game consoles. These platforms range from large mainframe computers to small handheld computing devices. Specialized video games such as arcade games, while common in the 1980s, have gradually declined in use due to the widespread availability of home video game devices (e.g., PlayStation 4 and Xbox One) and video games on desktop and laptop computers and smartphones.
The input device used for games, the game controller, varies across platforms. Common controllers include gamepads, mouses, keyboards, joysticks, the touchscreens of mobile devices and buttons. In addition to video and (in most cases) audio feedback, some games include haptic, vibration or force feedback peripherals.

http://axelbluhme.se Can you design a drum machine that does more than simply hide its workings inside an invisible box? XOXX Composer turns the inner functions of sampling, looping, and sequencing, into tangible, kinetic, sculptural form. Wheels turn. Magnets trigger sounds. The result is a mechanical take on patterned sound. This project started with a curiosity to understand when and why people take their first steps into producing music and how we relate to rhythmic composition and construction in an electronic environment. The goal is to inspire and allow exploration even though there might be lack of confidence or knowledge. Capture sounds from your surroundings or sample records, simply let curiosity and creativity lead the way to quickly create unique beats. The physical interface is made up from eight rotating discs allowing the user to layer up to eight different sounds. Each set of eight discs are colour coded and each individual disc in the set has its own pattern so as to allow the user to create their own mental system and means of organising their sounds. Every disc is quantised into four bars, which is indicated by the coloured lines on their faces, and each bar is divided into four steps. That means every disc has sixteen steps which allows the user to explore a variety of different music styles and degrees of complexity.

We observe how Monk's productions are shaped, beginning with her initial work in solitude continuing on to the rehearsal process where she further develops her musical and choreographic forms with her Ensemble members. In Monk's work, this is an ongoing process. Even at the performance stage, Monk continues to transform the work by striving for a balance between discipline and freedom; and an openness to change. Inner Voice sets out to locate the motivation and source of Monk's creative force. There are no ready made answers.

Plot: This documentary shows the life of Betty Freeman who is probably one of the most influential patrons of contemporary music. Since she began to give financial assistance to composers and performers of contemporary music in 1964, she has given a total of 413 grants and commissions for living expenses, compositions, recordings, performances, librettos etc. to 81 artists. Among these artists, who could not have created the works they are known for without the patronage of Betty Freeman, are as famous artists as John Cage, Steve Reich, Robert Wilson and Peter Sellars and also younger composers as the Austrian Olga Neuwirth and the Swiss Hans Peter Kyburz for example. During the era of Gerard Mortier and Hans Landesmann as directors of the Salzburg Festival Betty Freeman gave money for commissioning compositions and paid for entire productions such as for "L'Amour de Loin" by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. Betty Freeman maintains strong personal relations to artists whom she supports and is therefore an important witness of the development of contemporary music. The documentary contains interviews with music- and arts-people whom she is in touch with and sequences of the music and productions which were made possible by her generosity, staged especially for this film.

It was an accidental series of events that brought Isham into the world of film music. Already an established performer and recording artist, he began to experiment with electronic music. In 1983, Isham released his solo debut album Vapor Drawings. He circulated a demo intended for ECM Records, but fortuitously caught the attention of film director Carroll Ballard. Ballard was searching for a new sound for a project and was impressed by Isham’s unique music and hired him to compose the score for Disney’s critically acclaimed film Never Cry Wolf.
While developing as a film composer, Mark Isham continued to prosper and gain notoriety for his work in electronic and new age. He won a Grammy for his Virgin Records release, Mark Isham and Grammy nominations for his albums Castalia and Tibet. Although honored in the electronic and new age genres, Isham is perhaps most celebrated for his contributions to jazz. He has collaborated and performed with jazz legends including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Bobby McFerrin. Mark Isham’s jazz releases have received critical-acclaim: Blue Sun was included in Downbeat’s “Top 100 Jazz Albums of the Decade;” and The London Times named Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project “Best Jazz Album.″
The sought-after composer continues to demonstrate his diverse musical voice in over one-hundred film and TV scores including Eight Below, The Cooler, Blade, Nell, The Secret Life of Bees, in addition to A River Runs Through It and Men of Honor both resulting in Grammy nominations. Other credits include Warrior, Dolphin Tale, Point Break and the Jackie Robinson biopic 42. Isham’s suite from the film 42 was premiered by the New York Philharmonic during the MLB Sandy Relief Concert in Central Park and played at Dodger stadium on “Jackie Robinson Day.” Currently, in addition to scoring his sixth season of ABC’s hit series Once Upon a Time, he also scores Oscar-winner John Ridley’s ABC’s drama American Crime. Directors constantly return to Isham on new projects. In this episode of Sounding Off we are talking with Film Composer Mark Isham. Mark will tell you everything you need to know about the job of being a Film Composer. From the ideas to all the technology associated with it DAW, Temp Music, Orchestration and the Recording and Mixing process.

It was an accidental series of events that brought Isham into the world of film music. Already an established performer and recording artist, he began to experiment with electronic music. In 1983, Isham released his solo debut album Vapor Drawings. He circulated a demo intended for ECM Records, but fortuitously caught the attention of film director Carroll Ballard. Ballard was searching for a new sound for a project and was impressed by Isham’s unique music and hired him to compose the score for Disney’s critically acclaimed film Never Cry Wolf.
While developing as a film composer, Mark Isham continued to prosper and gain notoriety for his work in electronic and new age. He won a Grammy for his Virgin Records release, Mark Isham and Grammy nominations for his albums Castalia and Tibet. Although honored in the electronic and new age genres, Isham is perhaps most celebrated for his contributions to jazz. He has collaborated and performed with jazz legends including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Bobby McFerrin. Mark Isham’s jazz releases have received critical-acclaim: Blue Sun was included in Downbeat’s “Top 100 Jazz Albums of the Decade;” and The London Times named Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project “Best Jazz Album.″
The sought-after composer continues to demonstrate his diverse musical voice in over one-hundred film and TV scores including Eight Below, The Cooler, Blade, Nell, The Secret Life of Bees, in addition to A River Runs Through It and Men of Honor both resulting in Grammy nominations. Other credits include Warrior, Dolphin Tale, Point Break and the Jackie Robinson biopic 42. Isham’s suite from the film 42 was premiered by the New York Philharmonic during the MLB Sandy Relief Concert in Central Park and played at Dodger stadium on “Jackie Robinson Day.” Currently, in addition to scoring his sixth season of ABC’s hit series Once Upon a Time, he also scores Oscar-winner John Ridley’s ABC’s drama American Crime. Directors constantly return to Isham on new projects. Can you design a drum machine that does more than simply hide its workings inside an invisible box?
XOXX Composer turns the inner functions of sampling, looping, and sequencing, into tangible, kinetic, sculptural form. Wheels turn. Magnets trigger sounds. The result is a mechanical take on patterned sound.
This project started with a curiosity to understand when and why people take their first steps into producing music and how we relate to rhythmic composition and construction in an electronic environment.
The goal is to inspire and allow exploration even though there might be lack of confidence or knowledge. Capture sounds from your surroundings or sample records, simply let curiosity and creativity lead the way to quickly create unique beats.
The physical interface is made up from eight rotating discs allowing the user to layer up to eight different sounds. Each set of eight discs are colour coded and each individual disc in the set has its own pattern so as to allow the user to create their own mental system and means of organising their sounds.
Every disc is quantised into four bars, which is indicated by the coloured lines on their faces, and each bar is divided into four steps. That means every disc has sixteen steps which allows the user to explore a variety of different music styles and degrees of complexity.

In this episode of Sounding Off we are talking with Film Composer Mark Isham. Mark will tell you everything you need to know about the job of being a Film Composer. From the ideas to all the technology associated with it DAW, Temp Music, Orchestration and the Recording and Mixing process.

It was an accidental series of events that brought Isham into the world of film music. Already an established performer and recording artist, he began to experiment with electronic music. In 1983, Isham released his solo debut album Vapor Drawings. He circulated a demo intended for ECM Records, but fortuitously caught the attention of film director Carroll Ballard. Ballard was searching for a new sound for a project and was impressed by Isham’s unique music and hired him to compose the score for Disney’s critically acclaimed film Never Cry Wolf.
While developing as a film composer, Mark Isham continued to prosper and gain notoriety for his work in electronic and new age. He won a Grammy for his Virgin Records release, Mark Isham and Grammy nominations for his albums Castalia and Tibet. Although honored in the electronic and new age genres, Isham is perhaps most celebrated for his contributions to jazz. He has collaborated and performed with jazz legends including Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Bobby McFerrin. Mark Isham’s jazz releases have received critical-acclaim: Blue Sun was included in Downbeat’s “Top 100 Jazz Albums of the Decade;” and The London Times named Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project “Best Jazz Album.″
The sought-after composer continues to demonstrate his diverse musical voice in over one-hundred film and TV scores including Eight Below, The Cooler, Blade, Nell, The Secret Life of Bees, in addition to A River Runs Through It and Men of Honor both resulting in Grammy nominations. Other credits include Warrior, Dolphin Tale, Point Break and the Jackie Robinson biopic 42. Isham’s suite from the film 42 was premiered by the New York Philharmonic during the MLB Sandy Relief Concert in Central Park and played at Dodger stadium on “Jackie Robinson Day.” Currently, in addition to scoring his sixth season of ABC’s hit series Once Upon a Time, he also scores Oscar-winner John Ridley’s ABC’s drama American Crime. Directors constantly return to Isham on new projects. The composer reunites with director Gavin O’Connor for the upcoming film The Accountant starring Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick and with director Scott Hicks’ on the upcoming feature Fallen. Isham is also working with first time director, animation veteran Christopher Jenkins (The Lion King, Aladdin) on the upcoming animated film Duck Duck Goose.

XOXX Composer turns the inner functions of sampling, looping, and sequencing, into tangible, kinetic, sculptural form. Wheels turn. Magnets trigger sounds. The result is a mechanical take on patterned sound.
This project started with a curiosity to understand when and why people take their first steps into producing music and how we relate to rhythmic composition and construction in an electronic environment.

Each set of eight discs are colour coded and each individual disc in the set has its own pattern so as to allow the user to create their own mental system and means of organising their sounds.
Every disc is quantised into four bars, which is indicated by the coloured lines on their faces, and each bar is divided into four steps. That means every disc has sixteen steps which allows the user to explore a variety of different music styles and degrees of complexity.
