Three people have been charged in connection to Thursday’s fire under a raise section of Interstate 85, according to state officials. The fire led to the eventual collapse of one of the spans and damaged at least three other spans.
Basil Eleby was charged with criminal damage to property and was taken to the Atlanta City Jail. Sophia Broner and Barry Thomas were cited with criminal trespass charge, a misdemeanor. The state fire marshal’s office said the two men and one woman are believed to be homeless.

“They used available materials to start the fire. We got reports that several individuals were in the area. We interviewed those; that led to a third,” said Jay Florence, Deputy Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.
Investigators would not elaborate on the types of materials used, or why the individuals started the fire, or any motive, or where exactly on the bridge the fire started.
The Georgia Department of Transportation said it will take at least several months to repair Interstate 85, where an intense fire caused a section of the elevated northbound lanes to collapse during the Thursday evening rush hour.

“We are not able to give you a firm estimate at this moment, but this will take at least several months to get this rebuilt,” DOT Commissioner Russell McMurry said at a news conference Friday after inspectors got a closer look at the damage.

Interstate 85
Interstate 85 (I-85) is a major interstate highway in the Southeastern United States. Its current southern terminus is at an interchange with Interstate 65 in Montgomery, Alabama; its northern terminus interchanges with Interstate 95 in Petersburg, Virginia, near Richmond. It is nominally north-south, but physically mostly northeast-southwest. While most interstates that end in a five are cross-country routes, I-85 is mainly a regional route, serving five southeastern states. Major metropolitan areas served by I-85 include the Greater Richmond Region in Virginia, the Research Triangle, Piedmont Triad, and Metrolina regions of North Carolina, Upstate South Carolina, the Atlanta metropolitan area in Georgia, and the Montgomery metropolitan area in Alabama.
Route description
I-85 is a route that serves several major locations in the Southeastern United States, stretching from Alabama to Virginia and major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta and Charlotte.
Alabama
Interstate 85 begins as a fork off Interstate 65 in Montgomery. From there, I-85 parallels U.S. Route 80 until the highway nears Tuskegee. At Tuskegee, I-85 leaves U.S. 80 and starts to parallel U.S. Route 29, which the highway parallels for much of its length.

Jude, also known as Judas Thaddaeus, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. Nola Sayne may have traveled along Interstate I-85 from Kennesaw, GA to Montgomery, AL more than anyone. Nola continues to drive back and forth, an 8-hour roundtrip drive, once, sometimes twice a month for the last 13-years to visit her son Zach who resides in a long-term pediatric nursing facility. The trip is long and boring but on the other end his her son who she loves dearly but could not get the support to care for at home. This was not an easy decision. Nola is trying to bring Zach back home to Georgia but because he is not a Georgia resident Medicaid funding is tied to the state where he resides. This is a bureaucratic nightmare that she is patiently wading through with the support of her husband and her advocate with the Children’s Freedom Initiative.

Three people have been charged in connection to Thursday’s fire under a raise section of Interstate 85, according to state officials. The fire led to the eventual collapse of one of the spans and damaged at least three other spans.
Basil Eleby was charged with criminal damage to property and was taken to the Atlanta City Jail. Sophia Broner and Barry Thomas were cited with criminal trespass charge, a misdemeanor. The state fire marshal’s office said the two men and one woman are believed to be homeless.

“They used available materials to start the fire. We got reports that several individuals were in the area. We interviewed those; that led to a third,” said Jay Florence, Deputy Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner.
Investigators would not elaborate on the types of materials used, or why the individuals started the fire, or any motive, or where exactly on the bridge the fire started.
The Georgia Department of Transportation said it will take at least several months to repair Interstate 85, where an intense fire caused a section of the elevated northbound lanes to collapse during the Thursday evening rush hour.

“We are not able to give you a firm estimate at this moment, but this will take at least several months to get this rebuilt,” DOT Commissioner Russell McMurry said at a news conference Friday after inspectors got a closer look at the damage.

From Charlotte Magazine: You saw the images of Charlotte from Tuesday and Wednesday nights, when rioters tossed rocks at police and set fire to Interstate 85, and a man named Justin Carr was killed outside the Omni. Yes, those nights were that tough, maybe the most difficult in our city's history. But out of them sprouted several days of peaceful, emotional protests that captured both the frustration in Charlotte's black community and the willingness of others to join them. On Saturday, thousands of people of all colors and ages and occupations came together in Marshall Park and marched through uptown, chanting together, "Black Lives Matter."
This short documentary by filmmaker Shawn Cetrone offers a less common view of the protests than the images of violence and unrest from earlier in the week that were broadcast around the world. The film brings viewers along with the protesters as they gathered Saturday, marched, and peacefully shut down center city.

The trip is long and boring but on the other end his her son who she loves dearly but could not get the support to care for at home. This was not an easy decision. Nola is trying to bring Zach back home to Georgia but because he is not a Georgia resident Medicaid funding is tied to the state where he resides. This is a bureaucratic nightmare that she is patiently wading through with the support of her husband and her advocate with the Children’s Freedom Initiative.

NextGen is a wide ranging transformation of the entire national air transportation system — not just certain pieces of it — to meet future demands and avoid gridlock in the sky and in the airports. It moves away from legacy ground based technologies to a new and more dynamic satellite based technology. Technologies and activities that support this transformation are currently part of the FAA’s investment portfolio and represent a step beyond our legacy modernization programs. These new capabilities and the highly interdependent technologies that support them will change the way the system operates, reduce congestion, and improve the passenger experience. This multi-agency initiative is led by the Joint Planning and Development Office.
Transformational NextGen Programs
ADS-B
Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) is, quite simply, the future of air traffic control. As the backbone of the NextGen system, it uses GPS satellite signals to provide air traffic controllers and pilots with much more accurate information that will help keep aircraft safely separated in the sky and on runways. Aircraft transponders receive GPS signals and use them to determine the aircraft’s precise position in the sky, which is combined with other data and broadcast out to other aircraft and air traffic control facilities. When properly equipped with ADS-B, both pilots and controllers will, for the first time, see the same real-time displays of air traffic, substantially improving safety. The FAA will issue a rulemaking that will mandate the avionics necessary for implementing ADS-B across the national airspace system, and will work closely with stakeholders to determine the timeline.
The FY08 budget request includes $85 million for ADS-B. Over five years the President’s Budget request totals $564 million for ADS-B.
SWIM
System Wide Information management (SWIM) provides the infrastructure and services to deliver network-enabled information access across the NextGen air transportation operations. As an early opportunity investment, SWIM will provide high quality, timely data to many users and applications – extending beyond the previous focus on unique, point-to-point interfaces for application-to-application data exchange. By reducing the number and types of interfaces and systems, SWIM will reduce redundancy of information and better facilitate multi-agency information-sharing. SWIM will also enable new modes of decision-making, as information is more easily accessed by all stakeholders affected by operational decisions.
The FY08 budget request includes $21.3 million for SWIM. Over five years the President’s Budget request totals $173 million for SWIM.
NextGen Data Communications
NextGen transformation cannot be realized through today’s voice-only communications. This is particularly true in the areas of aircraft trajectory-based on operations, net-centric and net-enabled information access. Initially, data communication provides an additional means for two-way exchange between controllers and flight crews for air traffic control clearances, instructions, advisories, flight crew requests and reports. With 70 percent of aircraft data-link equipped, allowing for the exchange of routine controller-pilot messages and clearances via data can enable controllers to safely handle more traffic. This improves air traffic controller productivity, enhances capacity and safety.
The FY08 budget request includes $7.4 million for NextGen Data Communications. Over five years the President’s Budget request totals $126 million for NextGen Data Communications.
NextGen Network Enabled Weather
Seventy percent of NAS delays are attributed to weather every year. The goal of this investment (combined with the other technologies outlined here) is to cut weather-related delays at least in half.
The NextGen Network Enabled Weather (NNEW) will serve as the core of the NextGen weather support services and provide a common weather picture across the national airspace system. These services will, in turn, be integrated into other key components of NextGen required to enable better air transportation decision-making.
It is anticipated that tens of thousands of global weather observations and sensor reports from ground-, airborne-, and space-based sources would fuse into a single national weather information system, updated as needed in real-time.
The FY08 budget request includes $7 million for NextGen Network Enabled Weather. Over five years the President’s Budget request totals $102 million for NextGen Network Enabled Weather.
NAS Voice Switch
Today there are 17 different baselines of voice switches in the NAS with some of them in the inventory more than 20 years. The NAS Voice Switch (NVS) will replace these switches and provide the foundation for all air/ground and ground/ground voice communications in the future air traffic control environment.

As an early opportunity investment, SWIM will provide high quality, timely data to many users and applications – extending beyond the previous focus on unique, point-to-point interfaces for application-to-application data exchange. By reducing the number and types of interfaces and systems, SWIM will reduce redundancy of information and better facilitate multi-agency information-sharing. SWIM will also enable new modes of decision-making, as information is more easily accessed by all stakeholders affected by operational decisions.
The FY08 budget request includes $21.3 million for SWIM. Over five years the President’s Budget request totals $173 million for SWIM.

NextGen transformation cannot be realized through today’s voice-only communications. This is particularly true in the areas of aircraft trajectory-based on operations, net-centric and net-enabled information access. Initially, data communication provides an additional means for two-way exchange between controllers and flight crews for air traffic control clearances, instructions, advisories, flight crew requests and reports. With 70 percent of aircraft data-link equipped, allowing for the exchange of routine controller-pilot messages and clearances via data can enable controllers to safely handle more traffic. This improves air traffic controller productivity, enhances capacity and safety.
The FY08 budget request includes $7.4 million for NextGen Data Communications. Over five years the President’s Budget request totals $126 million for NextGen Data Communications.

Seventy percent of NAS delays are attributed to weather every year. The goal of this investment (combined with the other technologies outlined here) is to cut weather-related delays at least in half.
The NextGen Network Enabled Weather (NNEW) will serve as the core of the NextGen weather support services and provide a common weather picture across the national airspace system. These services will, in turn, be integrated into other key components of NextGen required to enable better air transportation decision-making.
It is anticipated that tens of thousands of global weather observations and sensor reports from ground-, airborne-, and space-based sources would fuse into a single national weather information system, updated as needed in real-time.

NAS Voice Switch

NextGen
NextGen is a wide ranging transformation of the entire national air transportation system — not just certain pieces of it — to meet future demands and avoid gridlock in the sky and in the airports. It moves away from legacy ground based technologies to a new and more dynamic satellite based technology. Technologies and activities that support this transformation are currently part of the FAA’s investment portfolio and represent a step beyond our legacy modernization programs. These new capabilities and the highly interdependent technologies that support them will change the way the system operates, reduce congestion, and improve the passenger experience. This multi-agency initiative is led by the Joint Planning and Development Office.

Driving from Atlanta to Florida on I75 (timelapse)
-75 is the longest Interstate Highway within Georgia. It enters near Valdosta, and it continues northward through the towns of Tifton and Cordele until it reaches the Macon area, where it intersects with I-16 eastbound towards Savannah. For northbound traffic wishing to avoid potential congestion in Macon, I-475 provides a relatively straight bypass west of that city and I-75's route. After Macon it passes the small town of Forsyth. The freeway reaches no major junctions again until in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first metropolitan freeway met is I-675, then followed by the Atlanta "Perimeter" bypass, I-285. MASSIVE Fire on I-85 Near Atlanta (Bridge Collapses) ✔
A massive blaze underneath Interstate-85 in Atlanta, Georgia, has engulfed and destroyed a portion of the highway and left cars stuck both north and southbound. I-85 northbound collapsed at Piedmont Road after less than an hour of the flames being reported. After the collapse, around 7:30pm EST, Sgt. Cortez Stafford of the Atlanta Fire Department told Fox 5 Atlanta the fire was being "contained" and that no firefighters were injured.

Today we made our way from Naha Airport in Okinawa back to Kansai International Airport, the main airport of Osaka Japan. On reflection, I really enjoyed our time in Okinawa. Turns out it’s a super popular tourist destination with Chinese tourists, they were everywhere. You can typically tell the Chinese from the Japanese because the Chinese are loud, crowding, and opposite in behaviour to the polite quiet Japanese. If China is the loud big brother, then Japan is the shy quiet little brother. At Naha Airport, there’s a Low Cost Carrier terminal, where Peach and Vanilla Air, two cheap airlines depart from. Day 9: Istanbul, Turkey - This was a day of sightseeing at some of the most famous attractions in Istanbul that I’ve wanted to visit my entire life including the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. And the read highlight of the day for me was the incredible Turkish food, especially the kebabs.

2:00 Sultan Ahmet Camii (Blue Mosque) - Our first stop of the day in this attractions in Istanbul video was the Sultan Ahmet Camii, which is commonly known as the Blue Mosque due to its blue tiles on the inside. We actually arrived a little too early in the morning, so they were not open yet, so we walked around the Hippodrome of Constantinople for a few minutes. When the Blue Mosque opened, we went inside. Both inside and outside are incredible to see.
5:37 Hagia Sophia - One of the most famous pieces of architecture in all of Istanbul and one of the most famous attractions is Hagia Sophia. It started off as a church, later became a mosque, and now it’s an official museum. After entering, you can walk around the main room, but the highlight of visiting Hagia Sophia for me was walking up to the upper galleries for some amazing views from above.
8:24 Topkapi Palace - Finally, one more of the most famous attractions in Istanbul, and located right in the same area as Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque is Topkapi Palace, which was an Ottoman Palace. You can walk around the gardens and palace structures, which are now galleries. I especially enjoyed the Imperial Harem, which was a section of the palace reserved for women, and the best preserved area of the palace.
11:25 Sehzade Erzurum Cag Kebab (Şehzade Cağ Kebap) - There are many different types of Turkish food, and cag kebab is a type of kebab from Erzurum in Eastern Turkey. According some some men I met while eating the amazing kebabs, this is the best restaurant for cag kebab in all of Istanbul. The type of kebab is made from lamb, and instead of being on a vertical skewer like other types of kebabs, it’s grilled on a horizontal skewer. The meat is cooked with wood fire, and slice off onto smaller skewers to be served. If you get a chance to try cag kebab, it’s an absolutely stunning Turkish food. The entire meal was delicious, but the best part was meeting the owner of Sehzade Erzurum Cag Kebab and eating a slice of the meat right off the roll hot and fresh. Out entire meal cost 85 TL ($28.88).
20:34 Basilica Cistern - 20 TRY ($6.80) - Arter the amazing Turkish food lunch, we headed over to see the Basilica cistern, one of many underground cisterns in Istanbul. It was interesting to see. We then headed to the hotel for a rest, and then went out again for dinner.
23:27 Dinner at Balkan Lokantasi - Beşiktaş is a neighborhood in Istanbul and we walked over to a restaurant for dinner in that neighborhood called Balkan Lokantasi. It was an extremely busy restaurant serving all sorts of different Turkish food in a cafeteria like style. You walk through the line, choose whatever dishes you want, and pay for what you get. You can eat a serious feast for a pretty good price. I got a little confused and didn’t really know what I was doing, so ended up ordering what was way too much food. But that’s alright, it was all really delicious.
It was fantastic day of Turkish food and visiting some attractions in Istanbul that I had wanted to visit my entire life.

Day 9: Istanbul, Turkey - This was a day of sightseeing at some of the most famous attractions in Istanbul that I’ve wanted to visit my entire life including the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. And the read highlight of the day for me was the incredible Turkish food, especially the kebabs.
Museum Pass Istanbul - 85 TRY ($28.88) - Before getting started with the things we did in this video, I purchased a Museum Pass for Istanbul, which granted me access to a few of the attractions without having to stand in line. I’m not sure if I really saved much money, but it did save time.
2:00 Sultan Ahmet Camii (Blue Mosque) - Our first stop of the day in this attractions in Istanbul video was the Sultan Ahmet Camii, which is commonly known as the Blue Mosque due to its blue tiles on the inside. We actually arrived a little too early in the morning, so they were not open yet, so we walked around the Hippodrome of Constantinople for a few minutes. When the Blue Mosque opened, we went inside. Both inside and outside are incredible to see.
5:37 Hagia Sophia - One of the most famous pieces of architecture in all of Istanbul and one of the most famous attractions is Hagia Sophia. It started off as a church, later became a mosque, and now it’s an official museum. After entering, you can walk around the main room, but the highlight of visiting Hagia Sophia for me was walking up to the upper galleries for some amazing views from above.
8:24 Topkapi Palace - Finally, one more of the most famous attractions in Istanbul, and located right in the same area as Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque is Topkapi Palace, which was an Ottoman Palace. You can walk around the gardens and palace structures, which are now galleries. I especially enjoyed the Imperial Harem, which was a section of the palace reserved for women, and the best preserved area of the palace.
11:25 Sehzade Erzurum Cag Kebab (Şehzade Cağ Kebap) - There are many different types of Turkish food, and cag kebab is a type of kebab from Erzurum in Eastern Turkey. According some some men I met while eating the amazing kebabs, this is the best restaurant for cag kebab in all of Istanbul. The type of kebab is made from lamb, and instead of being on a vertical skewer like other types of kebabs, it’s grilled on a horizontal skewer. The meat is cooked with wood fire, and slice off onto smaller skewers to be served. If you get a chance to try cag kebab, it’s an absolutely stunning Turkish food. The entire meal was delicious, but the best part was meeting the owner of Sehzade Erzurum Cag Kebab and eating a slice of the meat right off the roll hot and fresh. Out entire meal cost 85 TL ($28.88).
20:34 Basilica Cistern - 20 TRY ($6.80) - Arter the amazing Turkish food lunch, we headed over to see the Basilica cistern, one of many underground cisterns in Istanbul. It was interesting to see. We then headed to the hotel for a rest, and then went out again for dinner.
23:27 Dinner at Balkan Lokantasi - Beşiktaş is a neighborhood in Istanbul and we walked over to a restaurant for dinner in that neighborhood called Balkan Lokantasi. It was an extremely busy restaurant serving all sorts of different Turkish food in a cafeteria like style. You walk through the line, choose whatever dishes you want, and pay for what you get. You can eat a serious feast for a pretty good price. I got a little confused and didn’t really know what I was doing, so ended up ordering what was way too much food. But that’s alright, it was all really delicious.
It was fantastic day of Turkish food and visiting some attractions in Istanbul that I had wanted to visit my entire life.

-75 is the longest Interstate Highway within Georgia. It enters near Valdosta, and it continues northward through the towns of Tifton and Cordele until it reaches the Macon area, where it intersects with I-16 eastbound towards Savannah. For northbound traffic wishing to avoid potential congestion in Macon, I-475 provides a relatively straight bypass west of that city and I-75's route.
After Macon it passes the small town of Forsyth. The freeway reaches no major junctions again until in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The first metropolitan freeway met is I-675, then followed by the Atlanta "Perimeter" bypass, I-285. It crosses inside the Perimeter and heads northeast several miles towards the Atlanta city center. I-75 then runs concurrently with I-85 due north over the Downtown Connector through the central business district of Atlanta. After the two Interstates split, I-75 makes a beeline northwest, crossing outside the I-285 Perimeter and heading towards the major suburban city of Marietta. This section of I-75 just north of I-285 has 15 through lanes, making it the widest roadway anywhere in the Interstate Highway System. North of Marietta, the final major junction in the Atlanta metropolitan area is the I-575 spur. I-75 then traverses the hilly northern Georgia terrain as it travels towards Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Today we made our way from Naha Airport in Okinawa back to Kansai International Airport, the main airport of Osaka Japan.
On reflection, I really enjoyed our time in Okinawa. Turns out it’s a super popular tourist destination with Chinese tourists, they were everywhere. You can typically tell the Chinese from the Japanese because the Chinese are loud, crowding, and opposite in behaviour to the polite quiet Japanese. If China is the loud big brother, then Japan is the shy quiet little brother.
At Naha Airport, there’s a Low Cost Carrier terminal, where Peach and Vanilla Air, two cheap airlines depart from. Terminal is a bit of a hyperbole, it’s actually a shed in the cargo part of the airport, around the corner from the normal part of the airport. Oh but Waylon you might say, you tell such exaggerated tales, well, put it this way, the seats at the terminal were plastic picnic seats. This was not a fancy terminal.
We then made it to Kansai International Airport. The hotel we're staying at, Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport, is the only hotel on the island, and is $135NZD a night, which is nearly the price of a hotel in New Zealand! Probably just goes to show that hotel prices in New Zealand are actually ridiculous, considering on a hotel on a man made airport island is still cheaper than a night at the Novotel in Hamilton.
Anyways, we then caught our last two trains with the Japan Rail Pass, a local train to Rinku Town, a town just across the bridge from the airport. While on the train, a small Asian woman wearing a crop top and showing heaps of midriff, asked me directions to Nakahigashi. I had no idea where that was, but I told her about the main stations in Osaka, and where she should transfer from. Kathryn and I then talked to her the whole way until our station. She was from Taiwan, and was in Osaka for the first time for a one week holiday. Afterwards, Kathryn said did I notice her flirting with me. I said I had no idea, but she was running her fingers through her hair, talking to me all cute, doing the damsel in distress routine. I was actually more concerned with trying to figure out what station she should get to. I guess it takes a woman to notice if another woman is making the move.
At Rinku Town I decided and forced Kathryn into catching a massive 85m tall Ferris Wheel. I’m not sure why I'm so obsessed with Ferris Wheels, I think it’s because they don't exist in New Zealand. Well this Ferris Wheel was at night, in the car park overlooking Kansai Airport. Since it’s by the sea, there was a strong wind on the ground that I thought little of. Turns out, 85m in the air, the strong wind was now more of a gust. Obviously, this Ferris Wheel is designed for this, and the wind would not be a bother, but because there were holes in the compartment, all you could hear the whole time was a roaring sound of wind passing through, and the slight shudder and groaning of metal as we continued on the 13 minute hell ride.
Interesting, on the way down I felt a lot calmer, even though technically if I fell even from 20m, then you're going to have a bad time. I think it was the wind.

Not Home: Nola Sayne Video
Nola Sayne may have traveled along Interstate I-85 from Kennesaw, GA to Montgomery, AL more than anyone. Nola continues to drive back and forth, an 8-hour roundtrip drive, once, sometimes twice a month for the last 13-years to visit her son Zach who resides in a long-term pediatric nursing facility. The trip is long and boring but on the other end his her son who she loves dearly but could not get the support to care for at home. This was not an easy decision. Nola is trying to bring Zach back home to Georgia but because he is not a Georgia resident Medicaid funding is tied to the state where he resides. This is a bureaucratic nightmare that she is patiently wading through with the support of her husband and her advocate with the Children’s Freedom Initiative.

Yes, those nights were that tough, maybe the most difficult in our city's history. But out of them sprouted several days of peaceful, emotional protests that captured both the frustration in Charlotte's black community and the willingness of others to join them. On Saturday, thousands of people of all colors and ages and occupations came together in Marshall Park and marched through uptown, chanting together, "Black Lives Matter."
This short documentary by filmmaker Shawn Cetrone offers a less common view of the protests than the images of violence and unrest from earlier in the week that were broadcast around the world. The film brings viewers along with the protesters as they gathered Saturday, marched, and peacefully shut down center city.

This is a bureaucratic nightmare that she is patiently wading through with the support of her husband and her advocate with the Children’s Freedom Initiative.

As an early opportunity investment, SWIM will provide high quality, timely data to many users and applications – extending beyond the previous focus on unique, point-to-point interfaces for application-to-application data exchange. By reducing the number and types of interfaces and systems, SWIM will reduce redundancy of information and better facilitate multi-agency information-sharing. SWIM will also enable new modes of decision-making, as information is more easily accessed by all stakeholders affected by operational decisions.
The FY08 budget request includes $21.3 million for SWIM. Over five years the President’s Budget request totals $173 million for SWIM.

NextGen transformation cannot be realized through today’s voice-only communications. This is particularly true in the areas of aircraft trajectory-based on operations, net-centric and net-enabled information access. Initially, data communication provides an additional means for two-way exchange between controllers and flight crews for air traffic control clearances, instructions, advisories, flight crew requests and reports. With 70 percent of aircraft data-link equipped, allowing for the exchange of routine controller-pilot messages and clearances via data can enable controllers to safely handle more traffic. This improves air traffic controller productivity, enhances capacity and safety.
The FY08 budget request includes $7.4 million for NextGen Data Communications. Over five years the President’s Budget request totals $126 million for NextGen Data Communications.
