"Andrei completed his journey which he undertook with courage and dignity at his home in South New Brighton, Christchurch."

Building his home was a focus for Andrei, as he strove to prove New Zealand could do better in building, the statement said.

"And in doing so he provided a haven for his family."

His building project on the New Zealand series of Grand Designs, highlighted building cost-effectively with better insulation and sustainable design.

"Andrei's family and friends wish to thank all those who are supporting them through this difficult time."

Abby Martin said the family had been touched by all the kindness shown and the messages from Grand Designs' viewers.

"Viewers felt their story resonated with them as it was very real – much like Andrei himself."
