The UN announced today that the number of refugees who have fled Syria has now passed the five million mark. A quarter of Syria’s population has now fled the country with little or no chance to return home.

Oxfam Ireland’s Chief Executive Jim Clarken said: “The international community must show their support for Syria’s neighbouring countries that have welcomed these refugees and rich countries should resettle at a minimum the most vulnerable 10 percent of Syrian refugees by the end of 2017”

Following today’s announcement by the UN that the number of Syrian refugees has now passed the five million mark, Oxfam and three Syrian organisations called on a meeting of the international community in Brussels next week to recommit support to Syrians forced to flee their homes.

More than 2.5 million people have been displaced in South Sudan due to conflict. The crisis has made it hard for people to plant crops, disrupted livelihoods and markets and forced host and displaced communities to share the little they do have, leaving one in three people severely food insecure.

We need your help to feed families and save lives. If you can, please make a donation to Oxfam's Emergency Food Crisis Appeal: http://oxf.am/Zbrq

South Sudan is, of course, the world's newest nation state, but it's also quite a rich country. Oil-rich at the time of independence, it was exporting 360,000 barrels of crude every day. It has had billions in aid, not least from the Obama administration, but globally as well. And yet…

Famine has already been declared in parts of South Sudan and if we don't act now, countries like Yemen and Somalia will follow suit. We need your help to feed families and save lives.

Please donate what you can today: http://oxf.am/Zbrq

Across the world, millions of children, women and men are starving due to a devastating food crisis. A catastrophic combination of conflict and drought has left them facing terrifying food shortages – and there is no end in sight.
