Guatemala is one of the richest and most diverse countries in Central America, but with levels of inequality so high that the majority of women from the indigenous population are excluded.

Over half the population of indigenous girls and boys suffer from chronic undernourishment. This situation is made worse by the recurring impact of disasters and droughts on the most vulnerable communities.

The indigenous population, especially women, are excluded from having access to production, justice, political participation and land. They have no voice and their rights are not protected.

Oxfam in Guatemala

Oxfam in Guatemala works to help indigenous women and other communities living in poverty to become organized, to participate actively, and have greater access to power and recognition, as well as enjoying a fair distribution of existing resources.

Oxfam tries to support people in Guatemala with:

  • Gender justice.
  • Land and the rural economy.
  • Adapting to climate change, preparation and response to emergencies.
