Mark Latham launches new Facebook platform

The recently sacked Sky News commentator has resurrected his "Outsiders" news program on Facebook.

Latham was sacked as a Sky News commentator last week after he speculated on his Outsiders show about the sexuality of a Sydney high school student simply because he was involved in a video for International Women's Day.

The former Labor leader, who lost to John Howard during the 2004 federal election, was let go after senior figures from both sides of politics labelled him a "bully" and urged Sky News chief Angelo Frangopoulos to act.

Latham was already under pressure to apologise to ABC host Wendy Harmer and fellow politician-turned-commentator Kristina Keneally for allegedly defaming them on-air when he was booted from his conservative talkshow.

Now, Christian Democrats leader Fred Nile has put up his hand to replace Latham on Outsiders.

Nile is renowned for railing against abortion rights and Sydney's annual Mardi Gras. If selected, he would sit alongside Latham's former comrades – Spectator editor Rowan Dean and Liberal MP Ross Cameron.

The NSW MP has written to Sky News to flaunt his credentials, according to the Australian Financial Review.

"I wish to apply to fill this vacancy if I can be of service to Sky News," Nile wrote. "I have had a great deal of media experience as a radio host on 2GB for five years on Sunday nights from 7pm to 12 midnight, and a regular columnist for the Sunday Telegraph. I have also produced my own newspaper – Family World News – for 25 years."

While the longterm future of Outsiders remains uncertain, Sky News has said the program will go to air this Sunday.

Meanwhile, Latham has refused to be "silenced" and has vowed to continue Outsiders by livestreaming a ramshackle version of the program on Facebook.
