Serving for 12 years, far longer than any other president, he had such a profound impact on the nation and the world that he is widely recognized as one of the transformational figures of the 20th Century and one of America's greatest presidents. By the time he left office, the United States had become a superpower, able and willing to exert its influence around the globe. This film is a documentary on his impressive life and career.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945), commonly known as FDR, was an American statesman and political leader who served as the 32nd President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. A Democrat, he won a record four presidential elections, leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic depression and a total war. His New Deal program, involved a great expansion of the federal government's role in the economy.
Roosevelt was born in 1882, New York. He attended the elite educational institution of Harvard College. At age 23 in 1905, he married Eleanor Roosevelt, with whom he had six children. He entered politics in 1910, serving in the New York State Senate. In 1920, Roosevelt ran for vice president with presidential candidate James M. Cox, but the Cox/Roosevelt ticket lost to the Republican ticket of Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Roosevelt was stricken with debilitating polio in 1921, which cost him the use of his legs and put his future political career in jeopardy, but he attempted to recover from the illness. After returning to political life, Roosevelt successfully ran for Governor of New York in 1928.
In 1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, Roosevelt successfully defeated incumbent Republican president Herbert Hoover to win the presidency of the United States. Having been energized by his personal victory over his polio, FDR relied on his persistent optimism and activism to renew the national spirit. In his first 100 days in office, which began March 4, 1933, Roosevelt issued a profusion of executive orders that instituted the New Deal – a variety of programs designed to produce relief (government jobs for the unemployed), recovery (economic growth), and reform (through regulation of Wall Street, banks and transportation). He created numerous programs to support the unemployed and farmers, and to encourage labor union growth while more closely regulating business and high finance. The repeal of Prohibition in 1933 added to his popularity, helping him win re-election by a landslide in 1936. The economy improved rapidly from 1933 to 1937, but then relapsed into a deep recession in 1937–38.
As World War 2 loomed after 1938, with the Japanese invasion of China and the aggression of Germany, Roosevelt gave strong diplomatic and financial support to China and the United Kingdom, while remaining officially neutral. His goal was to make America the "Arsenal of Democracy", which would supply munitions to the Allies. In March 1941, Roosevelt, with Congressional approval, provided Lend-Lease aid to Britain and China. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which he called "a date which will live in infamy", Roosevelt sought and obtained the quick approval, on December 8, of the United States Congress to declare war on Japan and, a few days later, on Germany. (Hitler had already declared war on the US in support of Japan). He worked closely with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and Chinese Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek in leading the Allies against Germany, Italy and Japan in World War 2. He supervised the mobilization of the U.S. economy to support the war effort, and also ordered the internment of 100,000 Japanese American civilians. As an active military leader, Roosevelt implemented a war strategy on two fronts that ended in the defeat of the Axis Powers and the development of the world's first nuclear weapon. His work also influenced the later creation of the United Nations. During the war, unemployment dropped to 2%, relief programs largely ended, and the industrial economy grew rapidly to new heights as millions of people moved to wartime factory jobs or entered military service. Roosevelt's health seriously declined during the war years, and he died three months into his fourth term. He is often rated by scholars as one of the top three U.S. Presidents, along with Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.

Great Depression
The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place during the 1930s. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations; however, in most countries it started in 1929 and lasted until the late 1930s. It was the longest, deepest, and most widespread depression of the 20th century. In the 21st century, the Great Depression is commonly used as an example of how far the world's economy can decline.
The depression originated in the United States, after a fall in stock prices that began around September 4, 1929, and became worldwide news with the stock market crash of October 29, 1929 (known as Black Tuesday). Between 1929 and 1932, worldwide GDP fell by an estimated 15%. By comparison, worldwide GDP fell by less than 1% from 2008 to 2009 during the Great Recession. Some economies started to recover by the mid-1930s. However, in many countries, the negative effects of the Great Depression lasted until the beginning of World War II.
The Great Depression had devastating effects in countries both rich and poor. Personal income, tax revenue, profits and prices dropped, while international trade plunged by more than 50%. Unemployment in the U.S. rose to 25% and in some countries rose as high as 33%.

Jimmy Dore
James Patrick "Jimmy" Dore (born July 26, 1965) is an American stand-up comedian. Dore started performing in 1989.
Life and career
Dore was born into and raised in a Catholic family of 12 on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois. He is the star of several Comedy Central specials, host of The Jimmy Dore Show, and a writer–performer for the Off-Broadway hit The Marijuana -Logues. His hour-long Comedy Central Special Citizen Jimmy was chosen Best Of 2008 by iTunes, and was named one of the Top 5 Comedy DVDs of 2008 by Punchline Magazine. Jimmy Dore's latest comedy special Sentenced to Live was released on October 6, 2015.
Dore currently lives in Pasadena, California, and hosts his own monthly show Left, Right & Ridiculous at the UCB theater in Hollywood. Much of his recent material is focused on the absurdity of the corporate news media, social criticism, and modern politics. In June 2009 he began producing The Jimmy Dore Show, a one-hour comedic look at the news, which originates at KPFK 90.7 FM Los Angeles, airs nationally on the Pacifica Network and on the web via The Young Turk's Network. He also hosts the podcast Comedy And Everything Else with his wife Stefane Zamorano and formerly with Todd Glass, who departed from the show in late 2009.

He worked closely with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and Chinese Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek in leading the Allies against Germany, Italy and Japan in World War 2. He supervised the mobilization of the U.S. economy to support the war effort, and also ordered the internment of 100,000 Japanese American civilians. As an active military leader, Roosevelt implemented a war strategy on two fronts that ended in the defeat of the Axis Powers and the development of the world's first nuclear weapon. His work also influenced the later creation of the United Nations. During the war, unemployment dropped to 2%, relief programs largely ended, and the industrial economy grew rapidly to new heights as millions of people moved to wartime factory jobs or entered military service. Roosevelt's health seriously declined during the war years, and he died three months into his fourth term. He is often rated by scholars as one of the top three U.S. Presidents, along with Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945), commonly known as FDR, was an American statesman and political leader who served as the 32nd President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. A Democrat, he won a record four presidential elections, leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic depression and a total war. His New Deal program, involved a great expansion of the federal government's role in the economy.
Roosevelt was born in 1882, New York. He attended the elite educational institution of Harvard College. At age 23 in 1905, he married Eleanor Roosevelt, with whom he had six children. He entered politics in 1910, serving in the New York State Senate. In 1920, Roosevelt ran for vice president with presidential candidate James M. Cox, but the Cox/Roosevelt ticket lost to the Republican ticket of Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Roosevelt was stricken with debilitating polio in 1921, which cost him the use of his legs and put his future political career in jeopardy, but he attempted to recover from the illness. After returning to political life, Roosevelt successfully ran for Governor of New York in 1928.
In 1932, in the depths of the Great Depression, Roosevelt successfully defeated incumbent Republican president Herbert Hoover to win the presidency of the United States. Having been energized by his personal victory over his polio, FDR relied on his persistent optimism and activism to renew the national spirit. In his first 100 days in office, which began March 4, 1933, Roosevelt issued a profusion of executive orders that instituted the New Deal – a variety of programs designed to produce relief (government jobs for the unemployed), recovery (economic growth), and reform (through regulation of Wall Street, banks and transportation). He created numerous programs to support the unemployed and farmers, and to encourage labor union growth while more closely regulating business and high finance. The repeal of Prohibition in 1933 added to his popularity, helping him win re-election by a landslide in 1936. The economy improved rapidly from 1933 to 1937, but then relapsed into a deep recession in 1937–38.
As World War 2 loomed after 1938, with the Japanese invasion of China and the aggression of Germany, Roosevelt gave strong diplomatic and financial support to China and the United Kingdom, while remaining officially neutral. His goal was to make America the "Arsenal of Democracy", which would supply munitions to the Allies. In March 1941, Roosevelt, with Congressional approval, provided Lend-Lease aid to Britain and China. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which he called "a date which will live in infamy", Roosevelt sought and obtained the quick approval, on December 8, of the United States Congress to declare war on Japan and, a few days later, on Germany. (Hitler had already declared war on the US in support of Japan). He worked closely with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and Chinese Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek in leading the Allies against Germany, Italy and Japan in World War 2. He supervised the mobilization of the U.S. economy to support the war effort, and also ordered the internment of 100,000 Japanese American civilians. As an active military leader, Roosevelt implemented a war strategy on two fronts that ended in the defeat of the Axis Powers and the development of the world's first nuclear weapon. His work also influenced the later creation of the United Nations. During the war, unemployment dropped to 2%, relief programs largely ended, and the industrial economy grew rapidly to new heights as millions of people moved to wartime factory jobs or entered military service. Roosevelt's health seriously declined during the war years, and he died three months into his fourth term. He is often rated by scholars as one of the top three U.S. Presidents, along with Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.

Serving for 12 years, far longer than any other president, he had such a profound impact on the nation and the world that he is widely recognized as one of the transformational figures of the 20th Century and one of America's greatest presidents. By the time he left office, the United States had become a superpower, able and willing to exert its influence around the globe. This film is a documentary on his impressive life and career.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945), commonly known as FDR, was an American statesman and political leader who served as the 32nd President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. A Democrat, he won a record four presidential elections, leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic depression and a total war. His New Deal program, involved a great expansion of the federal government's role in the economy.
Roosevelt was born in 1882, New York. He attended the elite educational institution of Harvard College. At age 23 in 1905, he married Eleanor Roosevelt, with whom he had six children. He entered politics in 1910, serving in the New York State Senate. In 1920, Roosevelt ran for vice president with presidential candidate James M. Cox, but the Cox/Roosevelt ticket lost to the Republican ticket of Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Roosevelt was stricken with debilitating polio in 1921, which cost him the use of his legs and put his future political career in jeopardy, but he attempted to recover from the illness. Roger Michell's (Notting Hill) whimsical, clever and ever so slightly risqué Hyde Park on Hudson is sheer movie-going delight. In a perfect narrative double-take on the term 'special relationship', the story of the secret love affair between Franklin D Roosevelt (Bill Murray) and his distant cousin Margaret Stuckley (Laura Linney) centres on the weekend in 1939 when King George (Samuel West) and Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) pay a royal visit to upstate New York with the objective of securing the United States' allegiance in the impending war. Based on Stuckley's diaries and letters, discovered after her death, Richard Nelson's finely modulated script balances charm, comedy and political acuity. Bill Murray's impish performance as FDR oscillates between playful and serious, proving a delicious contrast to Laura Linney's gentle naivety and Olivia Williams' energetic swagger as the forthright Eleanor Roosevelt. Intriguingly, given its essentially female perspective, the heart of the film is to be found in an extraordinary scene between the two leaders - the roguish, paternal American President, and the nervous young British King - an encounter that will ultimately define the future alliance. Excellent cinematography and production design from Lol Crawley (Ballast; Here) and Simon Bowles respectively complete this dreamy, impeccable film.

Roger Michell's (Notting Hill) whimsical, clever and ever so slightly risqué Hyde Park on Hudson is sheer movie-going delight. In a perfect narrative double-take on the term 'special relationship', the story of the secret love affair between Franklin D Roosevelt (Bill Murray) and his distant cousin Margaret Stuckley (Laura Linney) centres on the weekend in 1939 when King George (Samuel West) and Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) pay a royal visit to upstate New York with the objective of securing the United States' allegiance in the impending war. Based on Stuckley's diaries and letters, discovered after her death, Richard Nelson's finely modulated script balances charm, comedy and political acuity. Bill Murray's impish performance as FDR oscillates between playful and serious, proving a delicious contrast to Laura Linney's gentle naivety and Olivia Williams' energetic swagger as the forthright Eleanor Roosevelt. Intriguingly, given its essentially female perspective, the heart of the film is to be found in an extraordinary scene between the two leaders - the roguish, paternal American President, and the nervous young British King - an encounter that will ultimately define the future alliance. Excellent cinematography and production design from Lol Crawley (Ballast; Here) and Simon Bowles respectively complete this dreamy, impeccable film.
