Beirut (Arabic: بيروت Bayrūt; Biblical Hebrew: בְּאֵרוֹת Be'erot; Hebrew: ביירות Beirut; Latin: Berytus; French: Beyrouth; Turkish: Beyrut; Armenian: Պէյրութ Beyrut) is the capital and largest city of Lebanon. No recent population census has been done but in 2007 estimates ranged from slightly more than 1 million to slightly less than 2 million as part of Greater Beirut. Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon's Mediterranean coast, Beirut is the country's largest and main seaport.
The first mention of this metropolis is found in the ancient Egyptian Tell el Amarna letters dating from the 15th century BC. The city has been inhabited continuously since then. The Beirut River runs south to north on the eastern edge of the city.
Beirut is Lebanon's seat of government and plays a central role in the Lebanese economy, with many banks and corporations based in its Central District, Hamra Street, Rue Verdun and Ashrafieh. Following the destructive Lebanese Civil War, Beirut's cultural landscape underwent major reconstruction. Identified and graded for accountancy, advertising, banking/finance and law, Beirut is ranked as a Beta World City by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network.

Lebanon (i/ˈlɛbənɒn/ or /ˈlɛbənən/; Arabic: لبنان Libnān or Lubnān; Lebanese Arabic: [lɪbˈneːn]; Aramaic: לבנאן; French: Liban), officially the Lebanese Republic (Arabic: الجمهورية اللبنانية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Lubnānīyah; Lebanese Arabic: [elˈʒʊmhuːɾɪjje l.ˈlɪbneːnɪjje]; French: République libanaise), is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered by Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south. Lebanon's location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Basin and the Arabian hinterland facilitated its rich history and shaped a cultural identity of religious and ethnic diversity.
The earliest evidence of civilization in Lebanon dates back more than seven thousand years, predating recorded history. Lebanon was the home of the Canaanites/Phoenicians and their kingdom, a maritime culture that flourished for over a thousand years (c. 1550–539 BC). In 64 BC, the region came under the rule of the Roman Empire, and eventually became one of the Empire's leading centers of Christianity. In the Mount Lebanon range a monastic tradition known as the Maronite Church was established. As the Arab Muslims conquered the region, the Maronites held onto their religion and identity. However, a new religious group, the Druze, established themselves in Mount Lebanon as well, generating a religious divide that has lasted for centuries. During the Crusades, the Maronites re-established contact with the Roman Catholic Church and asserted their communion with Rome. The ties they established with the Latins have influenced the region into the modern era.
The Middle East (also called the Mid East) is a transcontinental region centered on Western Asia and Egypt. The corresponding adjective is Middle-Eastern and the derived noun is Middle-Easterner. Formerly, the Eurocentric synonym Near East (as opposed to Far East) was commonly used. Arabs, Azeris, Kurds, Persians, and Turks constitute the largest ethnic groups in the region by population, while Armenians, Assyrians, Circassians, Copts, Druze, Jews, Maronites, Somalis, and other ethnic and ethno-religious groups form significant minorities.
The History of the Middle East dates back to ancient times, with the (geo-political) importance of the region being recognized for millennia. Several major religions have their origins in the Middle East, including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; the Baha'i faith, Mandaeism, Unitarian Druze, and numerous other belief systems were also established within the region. The Middle East generally has a hot, arid climate, with several major rivers providing irrigation to support agriculture in limited areas such as the Nile Delta in Egypt, the Tigris and Euphrates watersheds of Mesopotamia, and most of what is known as the Fertile Crescent. Most of the countries that border the Persian Gulf have vast reserves of crude oil, with the dictatorships of the Arabian Peninsula in particular benefiting from petroleum exports. In modern times the Middle East remains a strategically, economically, politically, culturally and religiously sensitive region.

"Paris of the Middle East" - so Beirut is often called the capital of Lebanon. And rightly so: Beirut is one of the most modern cities in the Middle East. And yet the city looks back on a hard past. Despite the civil war, many Beirutans still look to the future with optimism. In the web documentary "My Beirut" Enheimische show their own personal picture of the city full of contrasts. On the map, Lebanon sometimes goes down. Somewhere between Israel and Syria, Lebanon often only appears in the German media when it comes to terror or Hezbollah. But Lebanon has been making a difficult balancing act between tradition and modernity for decades. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the capital Beirut. A lively nightlife with perhaps the best parties in the Middle East meets conservative believ...

Lebanese authorities have adopted new security arrangements to shield the internal situation against I-S-I-L threats to de-stabilize the country. Security forces in Beirut say they've discovered plots to target the Shia community's political, security and popular figures. Officials say the threat is evidenced by attempts last week to assassinate Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and General Security Chief Major General Abbas Ibrahim, and to blow up hospitals in Beirut's southern suburbs. A senior security official says a French terror suspect in custody has revealed an I-S-I-L plan to bomb more than one target with the aim of igniting a Sunni-Shia conflict in Lebanon.

Commissioned by the Lebanese Ministry of Tourism, We spent 5 summer months filming Lebanon from Above, including its rural, urban, cultural touristic and historical location, as well as the amazing number of festivals. The idea was to show Lebanon's beauty, diversity and wealth from another angle (above), in order to encourage and promote international and domestic tourism. My main personal goal is to remind us all that Lebanon is not all about problems, political turmoil, trash...etc but is first and foremost a country that has so much to offer on such a small portion of land, and is still, in spite of everything, truly beautiful. Maybe by seeing this video, people who lost sight of what Lebanon truly is, will have newfound optimism and strength to participate in steering the country i...

Tomorrow We Will See offers a window into how ten artists in Lebanon are using art as a tool to question sectarian divisions while encouraging freedom of thought. Against the backdrop of Lebanon’s scars from wars, and socio-political scars created from sectarian divisions, Lebanese artists continue to contribute to the creative community despite the uncertainties of what tomorrow may bring. A rock band's thought-provoking lyrics, a poet's description of time shrinking, an architect's experimental manipulation of space, a novelist's language of the female body, and a painter's reflections on his choice of colors, reveal the process by which the featured artists transform ideas, sketches, spaces into vibrant and dynamic works of art while describing what the expression ‘Bukra Minshouf’ (‘...
Thousands of Asian women leave their homes each year to work as maids in the Arab World with the hope of securing a better economic future. Yet since their experiences are hidden behind closed doors, little is known of the fears and struggles they face while abroad. Tracing women's journeys from Sri Lanka to Lebanon, this film exposes the little known world of the domestic migrant worker. Since 1973 women have been migrating to Lebanon to work to fulfil the caring and cleaning needs of wealthier families. These women work for years to send money home for their financial futures. While some are able to succeed, many do not. Rather, their dreams are shattered in exploitive and abusive situations. In their own voices, the women in this film reveal cases of torture, rape, physical and menta...
In 1948, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to leave their country during the ‘Nakba’, the ‘catastrophe’, the founding of the state of Israel. The majority of Palestinians in Lebanon retain the hope of one day returning home - known internationally as ‘the right of return’ - but almost seven decades later, refugee camps have become part of the urban landscape of Lebanon. Over a quarter-of-a-million Palestinians still live in the 12 UN-registered camps and 42 other so-called ‘gatherings’ across Lebanon. Lebanon is their home but any chance of becoming a genuine part of the communities they live in is constantly undermined by strict laws ‘protecting’ Lebanese citizens’ rights, general safety and well-being. But the influx of Syrian refugees has pushed more people into the sex industry, with many Syrians turning to prostitution to survive. Benjamin Zand from BBC Pop Up meets Syrian refugees who say they had no other choice but to become prostitutes, and finds out how European women in "super night clubs" are being locked up, by law, everyday.
