Three things are clear coming out of the second NDP leadership debate in Montreal. First, there's a clear sense of where the party is headed. Second, the field of leadership candidates is extremely strong. And, finally, the candidates will need to try harder to distinguish themselves. The sooner NDP leadership candidates stand out, the faster they become a household name or a familiar face. For the good of the race and the growth of the party base, candidates need to move into competitive mode - and even "entertainment mode" - ASAP.
Anti-Semitism used to be theoretical to me, a thing that happened to my grandparents. Now it's become a reality I have to explain to my son. There are people saying that we deserve a right to attack people not because of anything they've done but because of their religion.
The statistics are horrendous and unacceptable. Less than 40 per cent of indigenous students who start grade one will graduate from high school. Compare that to the national rate of 87 per cent. The gap in university graduation is even greater. The economic advantages of "closing the gap" far outweigh the costs.
It has been a month since Beyak stood on the floor of the Senate to make her outrageous comments about the "good" parts of the residential school system. Part of me wants to thank Beyak for making it so clear that there is much work to be done to expose truth and ensure reconciliation. But Beyak doesn't have to stay in the Senate for me to do that.
Despite those who may object to free birth control, there are many reasons why prescription birth control should be free. Making birth control free saves Canada billions in health care costs. It benefits those who take it, is effective in reducing unintended pregnancies and abortions, and increases equal access to sexual health products.
April 6 is the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, a day when we recognize the tremendous power of sport. Evidence shows that the benefits of sport are undeniable. For instance, according to the World Health Organization, for every $1 spent on sports-related programs, $3 is saved on public health care costs.
If we try (by applying for that job, going to the gym or doing something outside of our comfort zone) and don't achieve a 100 per cent success rate, we deem ourselves to have failed. Stop comparing yourself to what society says you should be, and instead create your own measurement system.
My parents raised me with a good head on my shoulders and taught me the rights and the wrongs of the world: Follow your morals, get an education, and live life to the fullest. They have also taught me that I will have to work twice as hard as others, because the system has set me up for failure.
"Look at all the young girls, this is a felony waiting to happen." That was the "joke" that Russell Peters used to open up the 2017 Junos on Sunday. Peters then proceeded to reduce Canada's heritage minister, the Honourable Mélanie Joly, to being "hot." The show went on, but anger over Peters has continued to build.
B.C. politics already has its dark money donations that are difficult to trace back to an actual donor. But the free for all when it comes to political fundraising in the province has given rise to another murky practice: raising campaign cash from some dark corners of the world.
About 80 percent of this food loss happens during harvesting and storage. And studies across most African countries show that women provide the majority of the labour for harvesting and storage. This is where investing in women can make a difference.
Hot water with lemon is a popular and soothing elixir. Some of the benefits of lemon water are that it's caffeine free, warming (or cooling) and a great way to stay hydrated. But it's often touted as a magical cure-all, one that helps us detoxify, lose weight, burn fat and even fight cancer. Unfortunately, very little of this is true.
For the doubters out there, Toronto's housing landscape is proof that Darwin's theory of evolution is, in fact, the real deal. As single-detached houses join the list of endangered species here in the 416, we're seeing the emergence of new forms of high-density housing, made to survive this storm of rising prices and dwindling supply, all by virtue of their very design.
Before you even move into your new home, it is important to know what you are getting into. Try to find or create a floor plan of the space, and take accurate measurements of the area. This will help you know what you can fit into your place and what you need to rid yourself of. If it doesn't fit or will take up too much room in your new place, there is no need to keep it. It will also give you an idea of how to organize your space before you've even moved in.
My darling Mexico, I hurt for you. I hurt that you're being abused by those meant to protect you. I hurt that all your beauty and your kindness and your art and your people exist overshadowed by corruption and I promise you that we will visit again.
The federal government recently created two marine protected areas in the Pacific region and has committed to increase ocean protection from one per cent to 10 by 2020. But will this be enough? Thinking of the ocean in square kilometres is just skimming the surface. Life thrives throughout the water column, top to bottom.
Busy celebrating the best of what Polish culture had to offer, I rarely paused to think about the darker parts of my heritage. But moving out from my childhood home and joining a Polish community during a formative time of my life brought this willful ignorance into stark relief.
If we are concerned about public safety we need to make it more attractive for people to grow, distribute and consume cannabis legally than illegally so that there is engagement with public safety mechanisms. Right now it is far more attractive for people to grow and consume illegally.
Over the last few weeks, there has been much press about how the banks have been accused of "upselling" clients and pressuring staff to market financial products to customers that they do not need. High-pressure sales tactics are not always that apparent.
Animals are present in almost every aspect of human life: our meals, our clothing, our entertainment industries, and yet they live their lives in the dark. Sometimes their suffering is hidden behind the walls of factory farms, where billions of animals live short, painful lives every year.
Both the housing dilemma and the rental dilemma - two problems connected at the hip - have the same solution: an increase in supply. And in time, so long as there is no government interference designed to spare the market from bubbles that grow too large and pop on their own, the system will re-balance and recover.
My journey through infertility was one of the hardest things I have ever done. It was hard on me emotionally, hard on me physically; it affected my marriage and my relationships with friends and family. It took a toll on my professional life. It made me doubt who I was as a person and the plan I had for my life.
That is all the time the Canadian government afforded seals to give birth to and nurse their pups. The sealers claim they will target adult seals in this section of the hunt. But for mother seals and their very young pups, it spells disaster. Sealing boats crashing through the ice, gunfire and the cries of dying seals will shatter the peace of the nursery.
