Top university for international outlook in Australia and New Zealand

In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016/17, AUT is ranked in the top 20 in the world for International Outlook (making us first in New Zealand and Australia), and among the world's top 600 universities. Times Higher Education ranks universities for international outlook according to their ability to attract international students and staff, as well as how well they engage and collaborate with overseas universities.

One of the world's top young universities

Times Higher Education ranked AUT as one of the world’s top 150 young universities, based on the quality of teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income. AUT is also one of the worlds' top millennial universities (those founded in the 21st century) - ranked as number 1 in Australasia and 14 in the world.

QS World University Rankings

In the QS World University Rankings 2016/17, AUT advanced 40 places to be ranked as one of the top 450 universities in the world (in the 441-450 band). This puts AUT in the top 3% of universities worldwide. 

AUT’s international outlook was highlighted, with AUT ranking #33 in the world for attracting international students and #64 for attracting international academic staff.

QS Top 50 ​Under 50​

In the QS ranking of the top 50 world​ universities under 50 years old, AUT was ranked in the #51-60 band; our highest ranking ever. We are the fourth youngest university acknowledged in this ranking.

A key component of the rankings methodology is a worldwide reputation survey completed by academic peers (85,000) and employers (42,000). Research citations are also assessed.

QS Stars

A 5-Star rating from QS
AUT has been rated as a five-star university by world university rankings organisation QS. We also achieved a maximum five stars for Teaching, Employability, Internationalisation, Facilities and Inclusiveness. AUT’s focus on Social Responsibility was recognised with a four-star rating. 

The QS stars system uses a range of indicators to evaluate and benchmark the broader student experience and contribution of universities.

QS Stars Business School

Overall_BS_stars_4_2016The AUT Business School holds an overall four-star rating from QS and the maximum five stars in Engagement, Facilities, Internationalisation & Diversity, and the MBA programme.


QS Best Student Cities

Auckland was ranked 28th in the QS Best Student Cities rankings, due to a high score for quality of living, a large and diverse student community, and a high rating from graduate recruiters as a source of new talent.
