Fell Swoop set for rapture at Randwick on Joao Moreira at TJ Smith Stakes

There will be no excuses for Fell Swoop in the $2,500,000 TJ Smith Stakes at Randwick Racecourse on Saturday.

The five-year-old gelding finished second last year behind champion sprinter Chautuaqa in a race which Canberra-based trainer Matt Dale marked as the best of Fell Swoop's career.

Dale has secured the world's best jockey in Brazilian Joao Moreira who holds a world record of riding eight winners from eight rides in Singapore in 2013.

Fell Swoop has enjoyed the same preparation as 12 months ago leading into the weight-for-age 1200m sprint, with solid runs at the Oakleigh Plate despite knuckling, as well as The Galaxy.

After drawing barrier five on Tuesday, Dale admitted his nerves ahead of the biggest sprint race of the autumn carnival.

"Everything is in order. We were in a very similar position leading into last year, we've obviously drawn a good barrier and secured Joao Moreira to ride so it's very exciting heading into Saturday," Dale said.

"You do get a little bit of anxiety as the day draws closer and on race day you certainly get a bit nervous and think it's D-day, but this has always been the plan."

Randwick is expected to soft on Saturday which Dale believes will provide perfect track conditions for Fell Swoop.

"The Galaxy at Rosehill a few weeks ago was the heaviest track I've ever raced on period, they're saying soft 6 or soft 7 and that's his optimum range at Randwick," Dale said.

Dale said Fell Swoop faces plenty of threats in a strong field, but acknowledged none more than Chautauqua who was considered the best sprinter in the world last year.

"Chautauqua is a proven horse at that tack and distance but has to drop back in trip because he went 1500m behind Winx the other day and is now dropping back to 1200m. Whereas last year it was in the sprint path all the way through for him," Dale said.

"Then there's up-and-comers like Russian Revelation and Astern, it's a solid TJ and we're just happy to be there fit and sound.

"We ran second last year and repeat would be nice but one better would be great, we'll be sure to give it big shake."

Canberra trainers Keith Dryden and Scott Collings have Red Heat running at Randwick in race 10 in the Adrian Knox Stakes.
