Whitsunday Regional Council mayor Andrew Willcox condemned the "imbeciles" who looted businesses around Airlie Beach following the destruction of Cyclone Debbie.
The Queensland residents have been told to move to higher ground with the Fitzroy river set to peak at 9.4 meters, a level not seen since way back in 1954.Vision courtesy: ABC News 24
Nine people, all aged in their 20s, were hospitalised after the balcony at the rear of the house gave way during a party on Saturday night. Vision: Channel Seven.
Despite the looting, and lack of electricity and running water around the region, Cr Willcox said residents of the Whitsundays have coped with Cyclone Debbie well.
"People at Airlie Beach didn't have running water for nearly 24 hours, and we're just starting to get some power back on.
"The community's banded together – sharing generators, helping each other clean up – so we don't want any of these imbeciles to come into the town doing these stupid acts."
