Joan Crawford and Walter Huston give powerful performances in this drama directed by Lewis Milestone. Controversial for its time, the film tells the story of prostitute Sadie Thompson and the lustful preacher who tries to 'save her' when their ship makes an unscheduled stop over on the South Sea island of Pago Pago.
The confrontation scene between Sadie and Davidson, when he rejects her plea for forgiveness and she goes into attack-mode, lashing out at his hypocrisy. "How do you know what I've suffered? Your God and I could never be shipmates!" she shouts wild-eyed, until finally surrendering (or does she???) to his influence by reciting the Lord's Prayer with him. Joan Crawford eyes don't blink for the entire scene.

Rain is a dark, moody 1932 motion picture directed by Lewis Milestone. The film stars Joan Crawford as Sadie Thompson and Walter Huston as a conflicted missionary who wants to reform Sadie, but whose own morals start decaying. Crawford was loaned out by MGM to United Artists for this film.
The film was not well accepted in 1932 because of its very risqué story line. However over 80 years later it is a surprisingly moving film with incredible performances and a dark brooding background.

Una buena película, estrenada en 1932 y que gana con el paso del tiempo, aunque en su momento fue fracaso de público y crítica, debido a que los temas tratados en ella se consideraban ofensivos para la puritana clase estadounidense de la época.
El pasaje de un barco comercial es obligado a desembarcar en la isla de Pago Pago, y mantenerse en cuarentena debido a la sospecha de una epidemia de cólera.
Entre los pasajeros hay una prostituta y un misionero que la acosa con la intención de "llevarla por el buen camino".
El debate que se establece entre los dos se desliza gradualmente hacia una lucha despiadada y malévola de dominación, anulación de la personalidad y sometimiento concupiscente.

Rain is a 1932 in film South Seas (genre) drama film directed by Lewis Milestone with portions filmed at Santa Catalina Island, California. The film stars Joan Crawford as prostitute Sadie Thompson and features Walter Huston as a conflicted missionary who wants to reform Sadie, but whose own morals start decaying. Crawford was loaned out by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to United Artists for this film.
The plot of the film is based on the 1923 play Rain by John Colton (screenwriter) and Clemence Randolph, which in turn was based on the short story "Miss Thompson" (later retitled "Rain") by W. Somerset Maugham.
History: Rain in a "pre code" release, and it was not well received; neither critically or financially upon initial release. The film earned $538,000 in the US and Canada and $166,000 elsewhere resulting in a loss of $198,000. (in 1932).
In 1960, the film entered the List of films in the public domain in the United States due to the copyright claimants failure to renew the copyright registration in the 28th year after publication.

This montage began as a labor of love and quickly became an obsession of mine. Many days and hours were spent researching clips, downloading and editing. This could not have been possible without the complete and total encouragement from my wife Tiffany ... you rock!
The following montage chronicles the evolution of film from its conception in 1878 by Edward J. Muybridge to the Lumiere brothers in 1895. Georges Melies a trip to the moon in 1902 was a total game changer and from there we go to the first theatrical releases starting in 1920-2014 ... this portion of the montage is chronological.
There are some notable films which are absent from the montage such as the Great Train Robbery (1903), The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) and Birth of a Nation (1915). These and many others were either impossible to find or did not fit in with the creative direction of the montage. There is also a Dumb and Dumber (1994) dancing clip between Tropic Thunder and 500 Days of Summer ... this was intentional I assure you.

Crawford was loaned out by MGM to United Artists for this film.

Actress Jeanne Eagels had played the role on stage. Other movie versions of the story include: a 1928 silent film titled Sadie Thompson starring Gloria Swanson, and the heavily sanitized Miss Sadie Thompson (1953), which starred Rita Hayworth.
In 1960, the film entered the public domain in the USA due to the copyright claimants failure to renew the copyright registration in the 28th year after publication.
Plot
A westbound ship en route to Apia, Samoa, is temporarily stranded at nearby Pago Pago due to a possible cholera outbreak on board. Among the passengers are Alfred Davidson, a self-righteous missionary, his wife, and Sadie Thompson, a prostitute. Thompson passes the time partying and drinking with the American Marines stationed on the island. Sergeant Tim O'Hara, nicknamed by Sadie as "Handsome", falls in love with her.

The following montage chronicles the evolution of film from its conception in 1878 by Edward J. Muybridge to the Lumiere brothers in 1895. Georges Melies a trip to the moon in 1902 was a total game changer and from there we go to the first theatrical releases starting in 1920-2014 ... this portion of the montage is chronological. There are some notable films which are absent from the montage such as the Great Train Robbery (1903), The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) and Birth of a Nation (1915). These and many others were either impossible to find or did not fit in with the creative direction of the montage. The Leiden International Film Festival recently requested a version of this montage to screen at their festival. This was an extremely humbling request that I was more than happy to accommodate. This is the version the festival received. There are some notable changes, some low resolution clips swapped out but overall, this is the best and FINAL version of this montage. The response to this, both positive and negative has been tremendous. This montage began as a labor of love and quickly became an obsession of mine. Many days and hours were spent researching clips, downloading and editing. This could not have been possible without the complete and total encouragement from my wife Tiffany ... you rock!
The following montage chronicles the evolution of film from its conception in 1878 by Edward J. Muybridge to the Lumiere brothers in 1895. Georges Melies a trip to the moon in 1902 was a total game changer and from there we go to the first theatrical releases starting in 1920-2014 ... this portion of the montage is chronological.
There are some notable films which are absent from the montage such as the Great Train Robbery (1903), The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) and Birth of a Nation (1915). These and many others were either impossible to find or did not fit in with the creative direction of the montage. There is also a Dumb and Dumber (1994) dancing clip between Tropic Thunder and 500 Days of Summer ... this was intentional I assure you.

Mani Nasry an exceptionally talented filmmaker, actor and artist with a sophisticated breadth of education, skills, experience, and professional accomplishments. He trained as an actor and director in New York with Salem Ludwig and with Donna DeMatteo for playwriting. For Mani, the decision to work in the film industry guided his academic decisions from an early age. He attended a Toronto high school renowned for excellence in the arts, and was accepted into one of the highly competitive film program at Ryerson university. It is notable that he went to Ryerson with an already well-established career in theatre, film, television and commercial work, and a range of multi-faceted achievements including producing, cinematography, casting, writing, directing, acting, and editing. On his own he added stints in New York and Los Angeles with leading acting teachers, as well as learning the grace and style of many forms of dance and athletics. With courses perceptively, he has also recognized the importance of acquiring an understanding of the business side of the industry, and the varied aspects of technology and production. There are some people clearly born to follow the path they have chosen from the start. You asked for it so here it is. The EVOLUTION of FILM in 3 minutes NOW with Star Wars. This montage began as a labor of love and quickly became an obsession of mine. Many days and hours were spent researching clips, downloading and editing. This could not have been possible without the complete and total encouragement from my wife Tiffany ... you rock!
The following montage chronicles the evolution of film from its conception in 1878 by Edward J. Muybridge to the Lumiere brothers in 1895. Georges Melies a trip to the moon in 1902 was a total game changer and from there we go to the first theatrical releases starting in 1920-2014 ... this portion of the montage is chronological.
There are some notable films which are absent from the montage such as the Great Train Robbery (1903), The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) and Birth of a Nation (1915). These and many others were either impossible to find or did not fit in with the creative direction of the montage. There is also a Dumb and Dumber (1994) dancing clip between Tropic Thunder and 500 Days of Summer ... this was intentional I assure you.

The Leiden International Film Festival recently requested a version of this montage to screen at their festival. This was an extremely humbling request that I was more than happy to accommodate. This is the version the festival received. There are some notable changes, some low resolution clips swapped out but overall, this is the best and FINAL version of this montage.

He has won three Oscars (out of 13 nominations), five Grammys, and has been nominated for an Emmy. He was twenty-two when his first album, I Love Paris, became one of the best-selling instrumental albums ever released. He is a virtuoso jazz and classical pianist and an accomplished arranger and conductor who performs with orchestras all over the world. He studied music at the Paris Conservatoire from 1943-50 (ages 11-20), working with, among others, Nadia Boulanger, the teacher also of many other composers, including Aaron Copland and Philip Glass. Legrand graduated with top honors as both a composer and a pianist.

In the early 1950s, Legrand was one of the first Europeans to work with jazz innovators such as Dizzy Gillespie and Stan Getz. His jazz-oriented projects, though infrequent, have been almost uniformly outstanding. While on a visit to the U.S. in 1958, Legrand collaborated with such musicians as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Phil Woods, Ben Webster, Hank Jones, and Art Farmer in an album of inventive orchestrations of jazz standards titled Legrand Jazz. The following year, back in Paris with bassist Guy Pedersen and percussionist Gus Wallez, he recorded an album of Paris-themed songs arranged for jazz piano trio, titled Paris Jazz Piano. Nearly a decade later he recorded At Shelly's Manne-Hole (1968), a live trio session with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, in which four of the compositions were improvised on the spot. Legrand also provided an odd scat vocal on "My Funny Valentine." After another decade had elapsed, Legrand returned to jazz and collaboration with Phil Woods on Jazz Le Grand (1979) and After the Rain (1982); then he collaborated with violinist Stephane Grappelli on an album in 1992. Not as well received as his earlier work was a 1994 album for LaserLight titled Michel Plays Legrand.
