Bashar Hafez al-Assad (Arabic: بشار حافظ الأسد Baššār Ḥāfiẓ al-ʾAsad, 
pronunciation Levantine pronunciation: [baʃˈʃaːr ˈħaːfezˤ elˈʔasad]; born 11 September 1965) is the President of Syria, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Armed Forces, General Secretary of the ruling Ba'ath Party and Regional Secretary of the party's branch in Syria. On 10 July 2000, he was elected president succeeding Hafez al-Assad, his father, who had led Syria for 30 years and died in office a month prior. In both the Syrian presidential election, 2000 and subsequent 2007 election, Bashar Assad received votes in his favor in the upper 90th percentile in uncontested elections where other candidates were not permitted to run against him. On 16 July 2014, Bashar Assad was sworn in for a new seven-year term, after his victory in the controversial June presidential election against two regime sanctioned candidates, the first contested presidential election in Ba'athist Syria's history.
Assad graduated from the medical school of Damascus University in 1988, and started to work as a doctor in the army. Four years later, he attended postgraduate studies at the Western Eye Hospital, in London, specialising in ophthalmology. In 1994, after his elder brother Bassel was killed in a car crash, Bashar was recalled to Syria to take over Bassel's role as heir apparent. He entered the military academy, taking charge of the Syrian occupation of Lebanon in 1998. In December 2000, Assad married Asma Assad, born Akhras.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has defended his government's actions in the region since the uprising against his rule, which erupted in 2011.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC's Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen, Mr Assad denied that his forces had dropped barrel bombs indiscriminately on rebel-held areas, killing thousands of civilians, and dismissed as propaganda a statement by the UN that his government often blocks access to besieged areas for relief organisations.
The Syrian leader also denied that there was a direct dialogue with the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State but confirmed that "general messages" were sometimes passed via third parties.

Bashar al-Assad is the President of the Syrian Arab Republic, Regional Secretary of the Baath Party, and the son of former President Hafez al-Assad.
Originally trained as a doctor, Assad attended medical school at the University of Damascus Faculty of Medicine. He then went on to get subspecialty training in ophthalmology in London's academic hospitals. Initially Assad had few political aspirations; his father had been grooming Bashar's older brother, Basil al-Assad, to be the future president. However, Basil's death in an automobile accident in 1994 suddenly made Bashar his father's new heir apparent. When the elder Assad died in 2000, Bashar was elected President unopposed with apparent massive popular support, after Syria's Majlis Al Shaa'b (Parliament) swiftly voted to lower the minimum age for candidates from 40 to 34.
Upon becoming President, Bashar al-Assad promised economic and political reforms to Syria, but he has so far delivered little change from the status quo. The Baath Party remains in control of the parliament, and is constitutionally the "leading party" of the state.

President Barack Obama said he had not yet made his decision regarding a U.S. strike on Syria during an interview with PBS NewsHour senior correspondents Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill. The president said that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons would factor into his calculation and he warned that the Assad regime should be held accountable. Mr. Obama spoke to the NewsHour on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech where he reflected on the challenges Americans still face today in the form of jobs, health care and education. President Barack Obama said he had not yet made his decision regarding a U.S. strike on Syria during an interview with PBS NewsHour senior correspondents Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill. The president said that Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons would factor into his calculation and he warned that the Assad regime should be held accountable.
Mr. Obama spoke to the NewsHour on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech where he reflected on the challenges Americans still face today in the form of jobs, health care and education. In the interview, the president also vowed to take steps to ensure voting rights for all Americans.

Wat is de aantrekkingskracht van de sterke leider? Op wat voor manier reikt de invloed van een autoritair of dictatoriaal regime over landsgrenzen? Moeten we onderhandelen met dictators? Tijdens de Nacht van de Dictatuur onderzoekt De Balie hoe dictaturen werken, hoe je met dictators om moet gaan en hoe een democratisch land de transitie kan maken naar een dictatuur.

Openingslezing - Paul Aarts
In de openingslezing reflecteert Midden-Oostenexpert Paul Aarts op de mogelijkheid van democratisering in het Midden-Oosten na de Arabische lente. Een lezing over de liberale democratie als westers exportproduct en de futiele pogingen om dat door buitenlandse interventie te bereiken. En vooral een reflectie op de paradox van verzet tegen regimes: hoe een strijd door (vooral) jongeren voor democratische verandering kan omslaan in het tegendeel. ‘Pessimistisch’ noch ‘optimistisch’, maar een nuchtere analyse van de politieke (en economische) verhoudingen in de Arabische wereld.
Paul Aarts is Midden-Oostenexpert en doceerde tot voor kort internationale betrekkingen aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Onlangs verscheen de tweede, geupdate editie zijn boek Saoedi-Arabië. De revolutie die nog moet komen (samen met Carolien Roelants). Hij gaf een vijftal lezingen over de Arabische Lente bij de Universiteit van Nederland.

Verslaggever Tom Kleijn (Nieuwsuur, samen met Roozbeh Kaboly) sprak december 2015 in Damascus met de Syrische president Bashar al-Assad. Onder meer over de situatie in zijn land, bombardementen op IS en jihadisten. Kleijn kreeg naderhand kritiek en lof voor het überhaupt spreken met al-Assad. Hoe kijkt hij er nu op terug? Waarom is het gesprek met al-Assad zo belangrijk? Wat voor man is Assad? En welke verantwoordelijkheid heeft de journalist?

- Remco Breuker, professor Korean Studies aan de Universiteit van Leiden. Hij gaat in op de lange arm van Noord-Korea, met name in de academische wereld.

In NO leidt reclameman Rene Saveedra (Gael García Bernal) een mediacampagne om het regime van de Chileense dictator Pinochet weg te stemmen. In 1988 wordt de Chileense dictator Pinochet door de Verenigde Naties verplicht tot het houden van een landelijk referendum. Met een simpel 'ja' of 'nee' zal de bevolking beslissen over het voortbestaan van het regime. De oppositie krijgt van de militaire junta dagelijks vijftien minuten zendtijd op de nationale televisie om hun boodschap over te brengen. De jonge reclame-hotshot René Saavedra wordt door de oppositie gevraagd om de 'NO' campagne te leiden. De vastberaden Saavedra weet met zijn positieve en kleurrijke campagne de murw geslagen bevolking te mobiliseren in de strijd om de toekomst van hun land.

Die zweitgrößte syrische Stadt Aleppo steht derzeit im Brennpunkt des Syrienkonflikts. Der Westteil von Aleppo wird von syrischen Regierungstruppen kontrolliert, der Ostteil von den Rebellen. Diese sind zu einem beachtlichen Teil Söldner oder gehören der terroristischen Gruppe Al-Nusra an. Zwischen den beiden Parteien tobt momentan ein heftiger Kampf um Aleppo. Wer Aleppo kontrolliert, kontrolliert die wichtigsten Versorgungswege in Syrien.
Während die westlichen Politiker und großen Medien fast ausschließlich das Eingreifen Russlands an der Seite der syrischen Regierungstruppen im Kampf gegen die Rebellen in Ost-Aleppo anprangern, weisen andere auf das rücksichtslose Vorgehen der Terroristen hin. Während für die westlichen Berichterstatter feststeht, dass eine Lösung im Syrienkonflikt nur ohne Präsident Assad möglich sei, der „Blut an den Händen“ habe, weisen andere darauf hin, dass in einem Syrien ohne Assad die Rebellen die Oberhand gewinnen würden und Syrien in ein endloses Chaos gestürzt würde. U.a. sagte der syrisch-katholische Erzbischof Jacques Behnan Hindo bereits am 2. Oktober 2015, ich zitiere: „Eines ist gewiss: Wenn Assad jetzt geht, dann endet Syrien wie Libyen.”

Weil für die geplante Beseitigung Gaddafis keine öffentliche Unterstützung des libyschen Volkes vorhanden war, hielten es die NATO, die USA und deren Verbündete für notwendig, das Land mit tausenden von terroristischen al-Qaida-Söldnern zu durchsetzen. Ebenso wurde Syrien mit terroristischen Söldnern durchsetzt, weil für eine geplante Beseitigung Assads keine öffentliche Unterstützung des syrischen Volkes vorhanden war. Nach der Beseitigung Gaddafis in Libyen wurden viele Libyer von den eingeschleusten al-Qaida-Terroristen inhaftiert, gefoltert und getötet. Viele von ihnen mussten fliehen, um überleben zu können. Dasselbe Schicksal droht nun auch Syrien, sollte die legitim gewählte Regierung Assads beseitigt werden. Eine Flugverbotszone im Raum Aleppo konnte bislang nur durch ein Veto Russlands verhindert werden. Viele Kommentatoren, sogar westliche, sind sich einig, wie z.B. der Kolumnist Jonathan Steele in der britischen Tageszeitung „The Guardian“: Eine Flugverbotszone komme de facto einer Kriegserklärung sowohl an die syrische Regierung als auch an Moskau gleich.

Am 16. Mai 2016 veröffentlichte die US-amerikanische Denkfabrik „Center for a New American Security“ – kurz CNAS und zu Deutsch „Zentrum für eine Neue Amerikanische Sicherheit“ – ein 22-seitiges Strategiepapier. Dieses gilt als Fahrplan für die Außenpolitik Hillary Clintons, wenn sie als US-Präsidentin vereidigt werden sollte.
Neben einigen Alternativmedien hat sich nun als eine der einzigen etablierten Leitmedien der „Tages-Anzeiger“, eine der einflussreichsten Schweizer Zeitungen, mit dem Strategiepapier befasst. Am 21. Oktober 2016 publizierte der „Tages-Anzeiger“ ein Interview, das er mit dem deutschen Geographen und Experten für internationale Politik Günter Meyer führte. Meyer leitet das „Zentrum für Forschung zur Arabischen Welt“ (ZERAW) an der Universität Mainz.
Günter Meyer analysierte das Strategiepapier der CNAS. Was ist ein Indiz dafür, dass es sich bei diesem Strategiepapier um die außenpolitische Agenda Hillary Clintons handeln könnte, sollte sie als Präsidentin gewählt sein?
Günter Meyer weist darauf hin, dass die politisch äußerst einflussreiche Denkfabrik von Michele Flournoy geleitet wird, einer ehemaligen Staatssekretärin für Verteidigung. Sie hat nicht nur eng mit US-Präsident Barack Obama zusammengearbeitet, sondern gilt auch als aussichtsreichste Kandidatin für das Amt des Verteidigungsministers, falls Hillary Clinton zur Präsidentin gewählt werde.
Auch trage das Strategiepapier den richtungweisenden Titel: „Stärkung der amerikanischen Macht. Strategien zur Ausweitung des US-Engagements in einer hart umkämpften Weltordnung“.
Diese Zielsetzung vertrete Clinton bereits seit längerem und es sei ihr damit gelungen, im Wahlkampf zahlreiche Republikaner auf ihre Seite zu ziehen. Abgesehen von den engen persönlichen Beziehungen zwischen der Präsidentschaftskandidatin und den Autoren des Papiers, setze das Papier die militärische Einmischungspolitik in die Belange anderer Staaten fort, für die Clinton bisher eingestanden sei.
Günter Meyer zählte nun einige Beispiele dafür auf, Zitat:
– „Clinton hat 2003 die völkerrechtswidrige Invasion im Irak zum Sturz von Saddam Hussein und zur Sicherung des dortigen Erdöls für US-Konzerne nachdrücklich befürwortet. Ergebnis der militärischen Intervention: mehr als 100.000 Tote, ein im Bürgerkrieg versinkendes Land und die Entstehung des IS.
– Als Außenministerin gab Clinton im Jahr 2011 den Ausschlag dafür, dass Obama dem Angriff auf Libyen zugestimmt hat, um auch dort einen Regimewechsel gewaltsam durchzusetzen. Das Resultat ist ein gescheiterter Staat ohne baldige Aussicht auf eine politische Stabilisierung.
– Ehe Clinton 2012 aus ihrem Amt ausschied, heizte sie den Aufstand gegen Bashar al-Assad in Syrien durch verdeckte Aktionen gegen das Regime an. In ihren bei Wikileaks veröffentlichten E-Mails erklärt sie den Sturz von Assad als Ziel. Dabei wurde sogar die Ausbreitung der jihadistischen Extremisten, des späteren Islamischen Staates (IS), begrüßt, wie die auf gerichtliche Anordnung veröffentlichten Dokumente des militärischen Geheimdienstes DIA belegen.“
Aus dem Scheitern dieser militärischen Interventionen, um den Sturz missliebiger Herrscher zu erzwingen, habe Clinton offenbar die Konsequenz gezogen, kommentiert Meyer. Nämlich, dass in Zukunft die Überlegenheit der US-Streitkräfte noch wesentlich massiver zum Einsatz kommen müsse, um außenpolitische Ziele zu erreichen. Das würden viele ihrer Äußerungen im Wahlkampf belegen, und genau diese Linie vertrete auch das Strategiepapier. […]
Angesprochen auf den Syrienkrieg, ob Clinton eine direkte Konfrontation mit Russland riskieren würde, wies Meyer auf die von Clinton nach wie vor geforderte Einrichtung einer Flugverbotszone hin. Dazu sei die Zerstörung der syrischen Luftwaffenbasen durch Marschflugkörper geplant. Dies würde Russland kaum hinnehmen und es habe bereits zahlreiche Abwehrsysteme in Syrien installiert. Die Einrichtung und Durchsetzung einer Flugverbotszone in Syrien würde unvermeidlich zu einer direkten militärischen Konfrontation der beiden Nuklearmächte führen. Ob Clinton dies tatsächlich in Kauf nehmen wird, bleibe abzuwarten.

Im Zuge des Arabischen Frühlings kam es vor gut fünf Jahren, im März 2011, zum Bürgerkrieg in Syrien. Was mit angeblich friedlichen Protesten gegen die Regierung von Präsident Bashar al-Assad begann, entwickelte sich bald zu einem komplizierten und undurchsichtigen Krieg, sodass kaum noch von einem Bürgerkrieg gesprochen werden kann. Verschiedenste bewaffnete Gruppen sind involviert, von Terror- bis zu Kurdenorganisationen, die gegen die Regierungstruppen, aber auch gegeneinander oder mit den Regierungstruppen kämpfen. Zudem führte seit 2014 eine NATO-Koalition unter US-Führung Luftangriffe auf Stellungen der Terrororganisation IS und Russland unterstützt die Assad-Regierung im Kampf gegen die Terroristen seit 2015.
Für die westlichen Politiker und Medien war von Anfang an klar: Schuld am Konflikt war der syrische Staatspräsident Bashar al-Assad, an dem kein gutes Haar gelassen wurde.

Aleppo ist gefallen, der Syrienkrieg geht weiter“. Doch auch die anderen, etablierten westlichen Leitmedien und Politiker standen dem in nichts nach. Es sei „eine Schande“, sagte z.B. Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel.
Da wird die zweitgrößte Stadt Syriens, die seit gut 4 Jahren von mehrheitlich terroristischen Milizen und ausländischen Söldnern besetzt gehalten wurde, befreit, und der westlichen Presse fällt nichts anderes ein, als zu schreiben, Aleppo sei gefallen? Das hört sich so an, als ob die Stadt Aleppo schon immer den sogenannten Rebellen gehörte und sie ein legitimes Anrecht darauf gehabt hätten. Was die hiesigen Medien jedoch nicht berichteten, dass die Straßen im Zentrum Aleppos voller Menschen waren. Einer, der das Verhalten der westlichen Medien und Politiker klar auf den Punkt bringt, ist der syrische Präsident Bashar al-Assad selbst.
In einem Interview mit RT warnt der syrische Präsident Bashar al-Assad davor, westliche Aussagen und Forderungen hinsichtlich Aleppo ernst zu nehmen. Der Westen sei mehr auf das Überleben von Terroristen bedacht, als auf den Schutz von Zivilisten. Die Niederlage der Terroristen sei gleichzeitig die Niederlage derjenigen, die sie steuerten und für ihre Ziele instrumentalisierten. Und dies im Verbund mit den westlichen Politikern und Mainstreammedien.
Erstaunlich ist seine Aussage, wie Terroristen auch „besiegt“ werden können, nämlich indem man sie
„zu einem normalen Leben zurückführt, zu normalen Bürgern“.
An den westlichen Mainstreammedien lässt Assad kein gutes Haar übrig: sie hätten keine Moral und Glaubwürdigkeit. Was immer sie erwähnen oder als Maske verwenden – Menschenrechte, Zivilisten, Kinder – all das würden sie nur für ihre eigene politische Agenda nutzen.
Weiter spricht Assad über die Rolle Russlands und über den neu gewählten US-Präsidenten Donald Trump.
