Man stabbed after Melbourne Central wild brawl

Stunned shoppers watch as dozens of police storm Melbourne Central after a wild fight broke out leaving one man in hospital from stab wounds.

The fight broke out at the Elizabeth Street entrance, near a Bank of Melbourne branch and a Burger Project outlet.

One witness said two men began arguing near the escalators leading to the train station.

"They were yelling incoherent things," the witness said. "Then they pushed each other up to Monkey King [restaurant], where one picked up a yellow stool ... and another pulled a knife.

"The man who picked up the stool was the one who was slashed on the cheek."

The injured man, aged in his 40s, suffered stab wounds to his arm and face and was taken to St Vincent's Hospital.

A 42-year-old man was arrested at the scene and is being questioned by police. A third man remains at large.

Detective Sergeant Haydn Beale said none of the men involved knew each other. "It appears pretty random from what we can understand," Sergeant Beale said.

"My understanding is the victim was in the shopping centre [and] for unknown reasons at this stage there has been a verbal altercation between him and one to two of the offenders.

"As a result of that, the offenders appear to have taken umbrage to what he said and then a physical fight has ensued."

Police took a fluoro yellow bike from the scene.
