Top Documentary Films: The Hard Life of an Ostrich
Ostriches have been highly sort after for their feathers, their hides and their meat since Roman times. Unlike chickens you can even use them for pulling carts and racing, which perhaps makes them one of the most truly versatile fowl known to man. Native to Africa the birds were particularly popular in the nineteenth century in the fashion industry, with their feathers being used to adorn all-manner of millinery and clothing. South African Ostriches became so popular as a design feature for the fashionistas of the day that the populations began to decline radically during the 19th century, until with a typically South African spirit of enterprise, and sheer guts, the locals decided to start farming Ostriches commercially. Around this period farmers also spotted their potential as the main ingredient in the nation's favourite snack, biltong.
The trend for fluffy hats lasted a long time, but sadly began to decline shortly after the First World War, leaving a number of farms with large flocks of these birds with attitude on their hands. Unperturbed, the South African farmers found new markets for their unusual produce. It would be hard to describe the birds themselves as 'beautiful' but they certainly have plenty of meat on them. Ostrich meat is also incredibly healthy, low in fat and an excellent source of proteins versus other red meats. Commercial farming for meat has never looked back, and as ostriches are incredibly adaptable, Ostrich farms have sprung up worldwide, even in unexpected places such as Lincolnshire in the UK.
Back in South Africa Ostrich meat has gained rapid popularity as a healthier alternative to beef. Most game is less fatty than beef and other red meats and despite the slowdown in demand for the birds' feathers farmers adapted quickly to produce 'Biltong'. Biltong is a basically an air dried meat, which is pretty much a national dish in South Africa. The earliest European settlers were no stranger to dried and cured meats - it being the only way to get meat to last the long journey from Europe to the furthest reaches of Africa. On arrival in those pre-refrigeration days, biltong proved an ideal way to preserve meat, which was in abundance in the wild. In some respects, South Africa was built on the stuff!
Many cultures can be closely identified with their cuisines. Ostrich meat biltong is not only delicious and healthy, but says something about the very origins and tenacity of modern day South Africa. A mix of European traditions and African scary birds, with some tasteful hats thrown in along the way, ostrich biltong is a unique but very tasty and typically enterprising sample of South African culture.

We came down to South Africa for the Cape Argus Tour. It is the biggest cycling event in the world, probably.
On Friday, to stretch out the legs we went on pre-race ride [~130km why not?] to the Cape of Good Hope [I love this name!]. The road by the ocean side was quiet and a lille deserted.
Suddenly, I spotted a white ostrich on my left, then this beast jumped on the road from the right and started chasing my friends! It was a little scary at first, but then I thought I gonna fell of my bike from laughter. The ostrich didn't have any problem to keep up at 50km/h and apparently they do 70km/h with no sweat.
Luckily the creature decided to leave us alone, as we were running out of road. The Cape of Good hope is a dead end way.
My guess he wanted to show off in front of his girlfriend, i bet she was very impressed!

About 1 month ago, fellow YouTuber BLUMGUM thought that it would be wise to call out the L.A. BEAST and his raw egg drinking abilities and he then proceeded to chug down 54 raw eggs, besting the L.A. BEAST'S personal record of 50. In an effort to redeem himself, the L.A. BEAST hung himself upside down, chugged 60 raw eggs like a boss, flipped upright again, puked those eggs into a frying pan, made an omelet and then ate it to reclaim his egg champion status. BLUMGUM did not take to kindly to the L.A. BEAST'S actions and decided to drink wasabi and eggs mixed together while hanging upside down, puke those up into a frying pan and make himself a GREEN EGGS AND HAM breakfast. BAD MOVE BLUMGUM. As stated on many previous occasions, the L.A. BEAST is not married, has no kids, no real 9-5 job, and has 24 hours, 7 days a week to think of ways to not be 1 UPed.

Ostrich
The ostrich or common ostrich (Struthio camelus) is either one or two species of large flightless birds native to Africa, the only living member(s) of the genus Struthio, which is in the ratite family. Starting in 2014, the Somali ostrich is now considered a full species separate from the common ostrich.
The ostrich shares the order Struthioniformes with the kiwis, emus, rheas and cassowaries. However, phylogenetic studies have shown that it is the basal extant member of Palaeognathae and is thus equally closely related to flighted tinamous. It is distinctive in its appearance, with a long neck and legs, and can run at up to about 70 km/h (19 m/s; 43 mph), the fastest land speed of any bird. The ostrich is the largest living species of bird and lays the largest eggs of any living bird (extinct elephant birds of Madagascar and the giant moa of New Zealand laid larger eggs).
The ostrich's diet consists mainly of plant matter, though it also eats invertebrates. It lives in nomadic groups of 5 to 50 birds. When threatened, the ostrich will either hide itself by lying flat against the ground, or run away. If cornered, it can attack with a kick of its powerful legs. Mating patterns differ by geographical region, but territorial males fight for a harem of two to seven females.

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is the biggest cycling event in the world, probably. On Friday, to stretch out the legs we went on pre-race ride [~130km why not?] to the Cape of Good Hope [I love this name!]. The road by the ocean side was quiet and a lille deserted. Suddenly, I spotted a white ostrich on my left, then this beast jumped on the road from the right and started chasing my friends! It was a little scary at first, but then I thought I gonna fell of my bike from laughter. The ostrich didn't have any problem to keep up at 50km/h and apparently they do 70km/h with no sweat. Unlike chickens you can even use them for pulling carts and racing, which perhaps makes them one of the most truly versatile fowl known to man. Native to Africa the birds were particularly popular in the nineteenth century in the fashion industry, with their feathers being used to adorn all-manner of millinery and clothing. South African Ostriches became so popular as a design feature for the fashionistas of the day that the populations began to decline radically during the 19th century, until with a typically South African spirit of enterprise, and sheer guts, the locals decided to start farming Ostriches commercially. Around this period farmers also spotted their potential as the main ingredient in the nation's favourite snack, biltong.
The trend for fluffy hats lasted a long time, but sadly began to decline shortly after the First World War, leaving a number of farms with large flocks of these birds with attitude on their hands. Unperturbed, the South African farmers found new markets for their unusual produce. It would be hard to describe the birds themselves as 'beautiful' but they certainly have plenty of meat on them. Ostrich meat is also incredibly healthy, low in fat and an excellent source of proteins versus other red meats. Commercial farming for meat has never looked back, and as ostriches are incredibly adaptable, Ostrich farms have sprung up worldwide, even in unexpected places such as Lincolnshire in the UK.
Back in South Africa Ostrich meat has gained rapid popularity as a healthier alternative to beef. Most game is less fatty than beef and other red meats and despite the slowdown in demand for the birds' feathers farmers adapted quickly to produce 'Biltong'. Biltong is a basically an air dried meat, which is pretty much a national dish in South Africa. The earliest European settlers were no stranger to dried and cured meats - it being the only way to get meat to last the long journey from Europe to the furthest reaches of Africa. On arrival in those pre-refrigeration days, biltong proved an ideal way to preserve meat, which was in abundance in the wild. In some respects, South Africa was built on the stuff!
Many cultures can be closely identified with their cuisines. Ostrich meat biltong is not only delicious and healthy, but says something about the very origins and tenacity of modern day South Africa. A mix of European traditions and African scary birds, with some tasteful hats thrown in along the way, ostrich biltong is a unique but very tasty and typically enterprising sample of South African culture.

About 1 month ago, fellow YouTuber BLUMGUM thought that it would be wise to call out the L.A. BEAST and his raw egg drinking abilities and he then proceeded to chug down 54 raw eggs, besting the L.A. BEAST'S personal record of 50. In an effort to redeem himself, the L.A. BEAST hung himself upside down, chugged 60 raw eggs like a boss, flipped upright again, puked those eggs into a frying pan, made an omelet and then ate it to reclaim his egg champion status. BLUMGUM did not take to kindly to the L.A. BEAST'S actions and decided to drink wasabi and eggs mixed together while hanging upside down, puke those up into a frying pan and make himself a GREEN EGGS AND HAM breakfast. BAD MOVE BLUMGUM. As stated on many previous occasions, the L.A. BEAST is not married, has no kids, no real 9-5 job, and has 24 hours, 7 days a week to think of ways to not be 1 UPed.
