Parkash Singh Badal

Parkash Singh Badal (born 8 December 1927) is an Indian politician who has been the Chief Minister of Punjab since 2007. He previously served as Chief Minister from 1970 to 1971, from 1977 to 1980, and from 1997 to 2002. He is also the patron of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a Sikh-centered regional political party based in Punjab. He was the president of the party from 1995 to 2008, when he was replaced by his son Sukhbir Singh Badal. As the patron of SAD he exercises a strong influence on the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, and is generally regarded as the second most powerful Sikh leader worldwide, after India's former prime minister, Manmohan Singh. The Government of India awarded him the second highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, in 2015.

Early life

Parkash Badal was born on 8 December 1927 in Abul Khurana, near Malout. He belongs to the Dhillon Jat clan. He graduated from the Forman Christian College in Lahore.

Parkash Singh

Major Parkash Singh VC (31 March 1913 – 23 March 1991) was a Sikh recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Biography

Parkash Singh was born on 31 March 1913 in Sharikar village, in the Lyallpur District of what was British India (now modern Pakistan). During the Second World War, Singh was a 28-year-old Havildar serving in the Bren Gun Carrier Platoon of 5th Battalion 8th Punjab Regiment, British Indian Army (now 5th Battalion The Baloch Regiment of Pakistan Army). In January 1943, his battalion was engaged in fighting on the Mayu Peninsula in the Arakan, Burma, against Japanese forces, when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC:

Singh later achieved the rank of Major in post-independence Indian Army. He died in 1991 aged 72, whilst undergoing heart surgery in England, at Ealing, London. His Victoria Cross is displayed at the Imperial War Museum, London.

Badal

Badal (English: Cloud, Hindi: बादल) is a 2000 Bollywood movie directed by Raj Kanwar. The film stars Bobby Deol and Rani Mukerji in lead roles. The movie is inspired by The Devil's Own, starring Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford.

Plot

Badal (Bobby Deol) is a young man with a tragic childhood. As a child, he had witnessed his entire family, his loving father, mother, and baby sister, murdered in a village massacre by ruthless police officer Jaisingh Rana, who kills people for fun. Years later, Badal has become a dreaded terrorist whose main target in life is exacting revenge on Jaisingh Rana for his family's horrible death. In this endeavor, Badal travels to a small town, where he meets a good-natured police officer, Ranjeet Singh (Amrish Puri), who takes Badal under his wing, and Rani (Rani Mukerji), a bubbly free spirit who falls madly in love with him. Ranjeet Singh's family eventually takes Badal in as a son. Through both Singh's family and Rani, Badal is given a new lease of life and comes to understand the values of sentiments, love and relationships, all of which he has missed out on in his life.
