Here is a short film of Iris and Thula at home captured during a project for Sony in March 2015. I teach Iris using topic based learning and that week we were on a 'Sea' theme so the garden room was decorated and I got out Iris's Pea Green Boat we had previously made for 'The owl and the pussy cat' poem. I filled the boat with delights for her to explore and on the table there were sensory activities using coloured rice which went down particularly well with Thula. Of course it wouldn't be the ocean without bubbles so we had plenty of those too.

Artistic girl with autism opens up with the help of best friend Thula the cat
Wherever 6-year-old Iris Grace Halmshaw goes, 2-year-old Thula is sure to follow.
When Iris is painting outside, Thula is always nearby, exploring in the garden. They play with the same toys in their fairy-tale-like playroom, take baths together, learn new things together, go on adventures and fall asleep together after long, exciting days.
They sound like sisters. And while the two best friends are like family, there is one striking difference: Thula is a Maine Coon cat and Iris is a child with autism, diagnosed at age 2. Together they prove what Iris’ mom, Arabella Carter-Johnson, has always believed: “different is brilliant.”

A child with autism takes in everyday life in his or her own unique way. In this documentary shot on Action Cam by Sony, we see an intimate portrait of how one little girl with autism uses art as a window into her world.
How it was made:
The story of Iris was created with archival footage from her family as well as footage shot on the Action Cam by Sony. The Action Cam was given to Iris to play and film with when she felt comfortable. Several unique POVs were created by attaching the camera to a pole mount, a bike mount, chest harnesses and even a rubber ducky mount.
Stills of Iris’ incredible paintings and a voice-over from her mother brought the story to life.

Decca’s newest vocal signing, lyric soprano Pumeza, is introduced in a unique album which tells her incredible and inspirational story in music: from her childhood in the townships of South Africa to the stage of Europe’s great opera houses with classic South African songs including Miriam Makeba’s greatest hits: Pata Pata and The Click Song, and arias by Puccini and Mozart.
Growing up amid the violence of apartheid in 1980s South Africa, Pumeza moved with her mother from one township to another around Cape Town looking for ever-safer places to live. She discovered opera by accident, channel-surfing the radio as a teenager. Overcoming extraordinary obstacles and prejudice she eventually enrolled at the South African College of Music in Mandela’s post-apartheid world.
South African composer Kevin Volans recognized the distinctive beauty of her voice and bought her a plane ticket to London where she auditioned for the Royal College of Music. She was immediately offered a full scholarship, and from there she went on to join the Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

A child with autism takes in everyday life in his or her own unique way. In this documentary shot on Action Cam by Sony, we see an intimate portrait of how one little girl with autism uses art as a window into her world.
How it was made:
The story of Iris was created with archival footage from her family as well as footage shot on the Action Cam by Sony. The Action Cam was given to Iris to play and film with when she felt comfortable. Several unique POVs were created by attaching the camera to a pole mount, a bike mount, chest harnesses and even a rubber ducky mount.
Stills of Iris’ incredible paintings and a voice-over from her mother brought the story to life.

Decca’s newest vocal signing, lyric soprano Pumeza, is introduced in a unique album which tells her incredible and inspirational story in music: from her childhood in the townships of South Africa to the stage of Europe’s great opera houses with classic South African songs including Miriam Makeba’s greatest hits: Pata Pata and The Click Song, and arias by Puccini and Mozart.
Growing up amid the violence of apartheid in 1980s South Africa, Pumeza moved with her mother from one township to another around Cape Town looking for ever-safer places to live. She discovered opera by accident, channel-surfing the radio as a teenager. Overcoming extraordinary obstacles and prejudice she eventually enrolled at the South African College of Music in Mandela’s post-apartheid world.
South African composer Kevin Volans recognized the distinctive beauty of her voice and bought her a plane ticket to London where she auditioned for the Royal College of Music. She was immediately offered a full scholarship, and from there she went on to join the Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
