Bill de Blasio (born Warren Wilhelm, Jr., May 8, 1961, later renamed temporarily "Warren de Blasio-Wilhelm") is an American politician who is serving as the 109th mayor of New York City. From 2010 to 2013, he held the citywide office of New York City Public Advocate, serving as an ombudsman between the electorate and the city government. He formerly served as a New York City Council member, representing the 39th District in Brooklyn, which contains Borough Park, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Gowanus, Kensington, Park Slope, and Windsor Terrace. De Blasio, the Democratic Party nominee for mayor of New York City in the 2013 election, defeated Republican Joe Lhota with more than 73 percent of the vote. De Blasio is the first Democratic mayor of the city since David Dinkins was in office from 1990 to 1993.
He ran for mayor promising to end stop and frisk and heal bitter relations between the New York Police Department and many New Yorkers, especially African Americans. His tenure has seen a spike in anti-police protests and disaffection with law enforcement, and he has been charged by the NYPD union with putting the interests of protesters above those of the police. He initiated new de-escalation training for officers, reduced marijuana prosecutions, and oversaw the beginning of body cameras worn by police. De Blasio approved a $41 million settlement for the five men whose convictions in the 1989 Central Park jogger case were overturned and ended a post-9/11 surveillance program to spy on Muslim New Yorkers.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
New York—often called New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part—is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States and one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of New York State. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. With a census-estimated 2014 population of 8,491,079 distributed over a land area of just 305 square miles (790 km2), New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. By 2014 census estimates, the New York City metropolitan region remains by a significant margin the most populous in the United States, as defined by both the Metropolitan Statistical Area (20.1 million residents) and the Combined Statistical Area (23.6 million residents). In 2013, the MSA produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of nearly US$1.39 trillion, while in 2012, the CSA generated a GMP of over US$1.55 trillion, both ranking first nationally by a wide margin and behind the GDP of only twelve and eleven countries, respectively.
York City Football Club is a professional association football club based in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England. The team compete in League Two, the fourth tier of league football in England, as of the 2015–16 season.
First founded in 1908, the club played seven seasons in non-League football before folding in 1917. A new club was formed in 1922, and played in the Midland League for seven years before joining the Football League. They played in the third tier until 1959, when they were promoted for the first time. York achieved their best run in the FA Cup in 1954–55, when they met Newcastle United in the semi-final. They fluctuated between the Third and Fourth Divisions, before spending two seasons in the Second Division in the 1970s. York first played at Wembley Stadium in 1993, when they won the Third Division play-off final. At the end of 2003–04 they lost their Football League status after being relegated from the Third Division. The 2011–12 FA Trophy was the first national knockout competition won by York, and they returned into the Football League that season.
The Mayor of the City of New York is head of the executive branch of New York City's government. The mayor's office administers all city services, public property, police and fire protection, most public agencies, and enforces all city and state laws within New York City.
The budget overseen by the mayor's office is the largest municipal budget in the United States at $70 billion a year. The city employs 325,000 people, spends about $21 billion to educate more than 1.1 million students (the largest public school system in the United States), levies $27 billion in taxes, and receives $14 billion from the state and federal governments.
The mayor's office is located in New York City Hall; it has jurisdiction over all five boroughs of New York City: Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island and Queens. The mayor appoints a large number of officials, including commissioners who head city departments, and his deputy mayors. The mayor's regulations are compiled in title 43 of the New York City Rules. According to current law, the mayor is limited to two consecutive four-year terms in office. It was changed from two to three terms on October 23, 2008, when the New York City Council voted 29–22 in favor of passing the term limit extension into law. However, in 2010, a referendum reverting the limit to two terms passed overwhelmingly.

In 2013 NYC recorded a record-low 333 homicides, yet at least 286 people lost their lives due to traffic violence. In a press conference today NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said it's "shocking to see how much those two numbers correspond." In announcing his first steps to implement Vision Zero, a goal of drastically reducing pedestrian fatalities which has seen monumental success in many countries around the world, he stated, "The first obligation of government is to protect the health and safety of our people, and this is an area we simply have to do better. We think there is an epidemic here, there has been an epidemic of traffic fatalties and it can't go on. And the time to start change is now. " Today's historic announcement comes near the site where 8 year old, Noshat Nahian, lost his l...
BROOKLYN CHILDREN'S THEATRE'S LOVE LETTER TO NEW YORK AND A THANK YOU TO OUR NEW MAYOR BILL de Blasio.
There's nothing more dramatic than looking back five or ten years at Streetfilms footage to see how much the streets of New York City have changed. In this wonderful montage, check out the incredible changes at Times Square, Herald Square, the Brooklyn waterfront, and many other places that outgoing NYC DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan and her staff have intrepidly transformed. We have similarly high hopes for Mayor Bill de Blasio as he takes office, and look forward to what he and new NYC DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg accomplish. Even though so much has changed, the vast majority of our streets still need to be rethought and redesigned. We need more space for efficient modes, slower speed limits, and traffic calming for our most vulnerable citizens. I hope this short gets them ex...
This one-day mini film takes a look at NYC's newly formed transportation advocacy group, Families for Safe Streets, and the press conference they held for their first public gathering on the steps of NYC's City Hall steps. There was plenty of emotional testimony given by the families of loved ones who have perished due to traffic violence on the streets of New York City. In fact, many of the people are likely familiar to Streetfilms viewers since they've been in past videos reaching back seven or eight years. Thus, we dug in to the archives to emphasize just how long some of these families have been asking for safer streets. As you may be aware, Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced the beginning steps for his ambitious Vision Zero Plan. While most of the members of Families for Safe Stre...

A very small encapsulation of footage I shot while doing a cable access show called bikeTV back in 2002. Almost every shot of this video features streetscapes and waterfronts that have changed dramatically. Pay attention, you will see Kent Avenue before protected bike lanes and even the painted bike lanes prior to that. You'll see garbage strewn streets in places, and if you look behind the riders you'll places where IKEA, Fairway, and East River State Park now stand. ] This ride featured many special guests along the way. But the best quotes came from Councilmember Bill de Blasio (now running for mayor) and Senator Chuck Schumer who espoused his beliefs wanting to see bike paths all over Brooklyn. Imagine that?

Yo Bloomberg – Things Go Better With Coke! Share This Video: Everyone knows that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg declared war on, among other things, sugary drink and junk food. In their infinite wisdom, Bloomberg and his administration reasoned that reducing the size of containers used to sell “sugary beverages” would help solve what they call an obesity epidemic in New York City. This “wisdom” apparently came with the responsibility to legislate change in the form of, among other things, reducing the size of “sugary beverage” containers in the city under penalty of fines, etc. Yo, Bloomberg! Did you hear about that Swiss guy Serge Roetheli who ran around the world fueled by Coca-Cola? He ran 25,000 miles and drank over 6 tons of Coke and ate McDonalds. http://www.the25000...
