All. Out. War.

The season seven finale of The Walking Dead finally delivered what fans have been waiting for, as the battle between Rick Grimes and Negan kicked off in Alexandria.

But there was one major casualty in the first battle, and that was Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green).

'The First Day of the Rest of Your Life' saw Sasha – prisoner at the Sanctuary – persuaded by Negan to help him shut down Rick's uprising.

Little did he know, Sasha had no intention of being used as Negan's weapon. And instead, she turned the tables, becoming a weapon against him instead.

Shut inside a coffin en route to Alexandria, she took the poison pill Eugene had provided in episode 15 and downed some water – while fittingly listening to Donny Hathaway's 'Someday We'll All Be Free'.

When it was time for Negan to present Sasha in front of Rick and the rest of the Alexandrians, he was shocked to find walker Sasha come out. Her attack on him kickstarted the massive fightback.

Walker Sasha took down one Savior.

At the end of the episode, Maggie and Jesus came across her in the woods, leading a tearful Maggie to put her down.

Speaking on companion show The Talking Dead, Martin-Green said she loved how Sasha went out.

"It just felt so right," she said. "It felt so complete.

"It was quite poetic when I found out how it was going to happen. Because I felt like it was the perfect end to my story, the perfect culmination of my life. I felt like all of my roads had led to that moment of getting to that place of complete selflessness. It felt perfect."

She added: "In this beautiful way, it was the first time we had ever rooted for a walker.

"Also, it was beautiful because the way I saw it, that warrior spirit lives on. That even in death, I was still going to fight, because I had realised my purpose."

The season finale also saw the return of Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) in a series of flashbacks.

The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US and on FOX in the UK.
