Latham, Cash, AFLW: The winners and losers of the week in politics

Updated March 31, 2017 13:06:37

A former opposition leader was fired from his day job, but in a rare display of unity, the Prime Minister and his opposite number came together in solidarity for those affected by Cyclone Debbie.

Fran Kelly and Patricia Karvelas, hosts of The Party Room podcast, pick their winners and losers of the week in federal politics.

Winner: Bipartisanship, for once

Patricia Karvelas: Bill Shorten and Malcolm Turnbull were both winners when they put their shouty rivalries aside and toured Queensland cyclone areas.

The joint press conference was a moment where we witnessed what politicians can be capable of when the pressure is on and they need to be united in the face of tragedy.

If only every day could have moments like this.

Loser: Mark Latham

Fran Kelly: Mark Latham is the loser for his mocking of the Sydney Boys High video in support of feminism, and the sledging he's done of his own colleague Kristina Keneally and also of Wendy Harmer.

The boy's video went viral, and now Latham's lost his job at Sky News.

He'd already previously lost a gig at the Fin Review, so where else is Mark Latham going to go?

Loser: Michaelia Cash

Patricia Karvelas: The train wreck interview with Neil Mitchell was a low point for the Government, giving Labor a free kick over the minimum wage issue.

The Government's submission on the annual minimum wage review says "low-income workers are often found in high-income households", but Employment Minister Michaelia Cash couldn't provide the figure in the interview despite being asked over and over.

Winner: Women's football

Fran Kelly: The AFLW Grand Final was a great display of footy and as someone mentioned to me this week, it ticks three boxes: it's good for footy, it's good for women and it's good for Adelaide.

So congratulations to the AFLW and the winners, the Adelaide Crows.
