The smashing spree began at 12.12am when police pulled over a white Commodore sedan driving erratically on Exhibition Street, near Collins Street.

As officers came closer to the car, the driver hit the accelerator, travelling north along Exhibition Street.

He drove through the city at high speed and turned onto St Kilda Road allegedly side-swiping a car before crashing into the rear of a Volkswagen Golf stopped at traffic lights.

The Volkswagen was hit with such force that it was propelled into a Suzuki motorcycle.

The white Commodore drove around the crashed Volkswagen and Suzuki, continuing along St Kilda Road.

The driver then made some zig-zag turns, turning right into Southbank Boulevard, then left into Kavanagh Street, where he crashed into several parked cars and a van.

Police arrested a 24-year-old Hoppers Crossing man, and two 20-year-old women, one from Hoppers Crossing and the other from Mill Park.

The man was taken to hospital with an injured leg but was later released into police custody. No one else was injured in the collisons.

The man was charged on Sunday with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, handling, receiving and retaining stolen goods, driving dangerously, evading police, careless driving, failing to stop after an accident, driving an unregistered car, and conducting an indictable offence while on bail.

The man fronted the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday afternoon.

He was remanded in custody and will reappear in court at a later date.

The two women were released pending further inquiries.
