How Karl Stefanovic's 'hilarious' wedding speech had guests in stitches

  • 124 reading now

A notorious larrikin, Karl Stefanovic's groomsman speech was as cheeky as it was out-of-tune.

Although, in this instance, it wasn't just the playful digs about his little brother Peter getting high, staring at his new bride's bottom or their parents questioning his sexuality, as Karl sang his wedding speech to the tune of Oasis' Champagne Supernova, the Today host was literally a little off-pitch too, much to the amusement of the 160 wedding guests.

"She wakes at dawn, does many gigs, reads the news, pays for the Double Bay digs. SJ you're such a bloody find," they sang of bride, Sylvia Jeffreys. "Saw you walking down the aisle, so beautiful she made him smile... all day you will find him gazing on her great behind."

The 42-year-old, who performed alongside his older brother and fellow groomsman Tom, also sang of Peter's love of flying first class and joked that "He likes to surf but it don't pay, for so many years his mother thought he was gay. Where were you when [Pete] was getting high?"

To loud chuckles from the crowd, they also made reference to the two weeks Peter's 60 Minutes colleague Tara Brown spent in a Beirut prison.

"Someday you will find him. In a Beirut jail like Tara. He's more like Ray Martin," they sang as the guests clapped along, and not before a dramatic pause: "He's better than Ray Martin."

The brothers finish their singing speech with a bolshy line:

"We got beautiful heads. we don't pay for shit agents deliver it. Oh Why, why, why?  Because they know why."

Stefanovic and Jeffreys tied the knot at Ooralba Estate in Kangaroo Valley, in front of a small group of friends including Jeffreys' co-stars Lisa Wilkinson and Richard Wilkins, at the exclusive hideaway which is usually reserved for $6500 a night.

Guests told Fairfax Media that the speeches were reportedly "hilarious" and included lots of stories of how the couple met in the Channel Nine carpack back in 2014 before they "took it from there".

"I've never seen a more beautiful bride, or a prouder groom," another friend of the couple said. "It was a gorgeous day from start to finish. So much love, so many laughs. They couldn't have wished for a happier start to married life."

Jeffrey's herself took to Instagram to describe the wedding as "Best. Day. Ever" and thanks her friends and family for the love. And, clearly, the laughs.
