George Michael finally laid to rest after private funeral

George Michael has been laid to rest at a private funeral in London, three months after he died at the age of 53. 

The Wham! star's funeral was delayed due to lengthy toxicology tests. The 1980s legend had several health scares during the past decade, but authorities have since confirmed the singer died of natural causes.

George Michael laid to rest in London

Friends and family of late pop star George Michael gather at London's Highgate Cemetery for funeral.

On Wednesday, Michael's family and a few close friends gathered at Highgate West Cemetery in North London to farewell the pop icon.

The singer's longterm partner, Fadi Fawaz, was also in attendance according to The Sun - despite earlier reports he had been barred from attending. 

The Wham! star will be interred alongside his mother, Lesley Angold, who passed away from cancer in 1997. 

Michael's publicist released a short statement on behalf of the singer's family, thanking fans for their support over the past few months.

"Family and close friends gathered for the small, private ceremony to say goodbye to their beloved son, brother and friend," the statement said.

"George Michael's family would like to thank his fans across the world for their many messages of love and support."

Michael – born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou – died peacefully at his home in Oxfordshire on Christmas Day.
