Finding a source[edit]

Tips for finding a source yourself

Note that sites like LibGen and Sci-Hub offer direct, free access to a very large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Wikipedia community endorses them.

Making a request
  • A request may be an open question or you may ask for a specific journal, article or work
  • All kinds of sources are possible here: newspapers, magazine article, databases, encyclopedias, court decisions, laws, books, etc.
  • We cannot handle full book scans
  • You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page
  • To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences
  • Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN ISSN, PMID, etc.
  • Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
  • Filled requests are archived.
  • Requests unfilled after three months will be archived

Fulfilling a request[edit]

  • Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
  • Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
  • Notify (mention) the requester using {{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}
  • You can point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... ). You can share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal, or by emailing the content to the requester.
  • You can email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.

Copyright tips:

  • Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
  • Share content in a limited manner that is targeted at as few individuals as possible to achieve a specific improvement on Wikipedia. All content is shared under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose in order to conduct research about topics on Wikipedia and/or to improve Wikipedia content.
  • Share copies privately rather than with a publicly accessible link whenever possible. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases should not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites. Preferably, do not share login access codes for entire websites; rather, share only an individual copy of a resource.
  • Remember that you take on the individual risk when sharing content, and act in a way that is comfortable and safe for you. Individual editors are solely responsible for sharing copyrighted content and assume all legal risks.

ProQuest History Vault[edit]

Does anyone have access to [2]?--Antemister (talk) 15:57, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

@Antemister: Can you provide an example of a source that you need out of there? ~ Rob13Talk 05:28, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
@BU Rob13: It is that "Survey of Tibet" linked on start page there. Do you have access to it?--Antemister (talk) 09:56, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
I do not, no. The University of Chicago has it if anyone has access there. ~ Rob13Talk 15:39, 21 January 2017 (UTC)
@Antemister: Some movement on this. I located print/microform versions via WorldCat. See here. If any volunteers work, study, or live near the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin, or the University of Hawaii at Manoa, you potentially have access to a copy. I can access the Chicago copy when it's returned (currently checked out), but I'm not a student there, so I'm unable to recall it or place a hold for when it's returned. ~ Rob13Talk 15:16, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
OK, I didn't mention here that I already had a look into that microfilm copy in german library. The reason why I asked here is the fact that that microfilm was incomplete (some pages at the end were missing and other hardly readable). That's why I explicitely asked for an access to the digital version at ProQuest.--Antemister (talk) 17:13, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
@Antemister: Good to know. The printed copy at Chicago may be clearer, so I will still attempt to obtain that, but the Wisconsin and Manoa copies are likely unusable then. ~ Rob13Talk 17:18, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
@BU Rob13: I now have the microfilm version copied as PDF, after digitation all pages turned out to be readable. The last page the microfilm contains is 81, do not know how many more the paper has. May be only one, but actually this last chapter on finance is of particular interest to me.--Antemister (talk) 21:10, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

'Pioneer of the Dutch Film Poster: Dolly Rudeman 1902-1980' by Paul van Yperen[edit]

A link is here. I'm working on an English article for Dolly Rudman (it's here, in a very embryonic state! -which also demonstrates the paucity of sources in English general.) There's an article on the nl.wiki, but the machine translation is v poor. Any help appreciated :) --O Fortuna!...Imperatrix mundi. 17:41, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: What part of this book do you need? Note that we can't handle full book scans. We could send you a table of contents and allow you to choose where to go from there. ~ Rob13Talk 19:32, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Yes, thanks very much BU Rob13, got that- well. I don't really know; since it's something I have zero-knowledge on, I was thinking just a few pages covering relevant periods- early years, major works, later years. Something like that. Se, the article is never going to be much more than start class (by me anyway!) but it would be good to flesh it out a bit. How easy is it for you/s? O Fortuna!...Imperatrix mundi. 19:35, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: This book appears to be exceedingly rare. See WorldCat. The only two copies in the United States are in a university in New York (where it's part of a special collection - unlikely to be eligible for interlibrary loan) and a research institute in Los Angeles (unlikely to engage in interlibrary loan at all). I happen to be likely to travel close to one of those areas in the somewhat near future, so I'll see what I can do. This one will likely take a while, though. It could be as far away as summer before I manage it. ~ Rob13Talk 19:41, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Thank you very much BU Rob13, that's very kind- but please don't bother. If it's as rare as that- WP:RSN probably? In any case, no point in going to that much trouble for something like this. Does Drmies do translations I wonder ;) *scratch chin* O Fortuna!...ImpFortuna Imperatrix Mundieratrix mundi. 19:56, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Not right now, but remind me tomorrow or this weekend. Drmies (talk) 22:57, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
@Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi: Its definitely a reliable source. The reason it's so rare is that it was produced only to accompany one specific exhibition as a sort of extended program in a sense, from what I can tell. When the exhibition was finished, most copies were probably lost or destroyed. It doesn't appear it was ever publicly made available, so libraries didn't have a chance to grab it unless donated (as in the case of Binghamton). Certainly an interesting history attached to this item. ~ Rob13Talk 01:32, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
A couple of libraries in Chicago have the Dutch version. The entire book's only 71 pages including illustration, so maybe the biography section is a manageable length for copying/translation. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 02:35, 18 February 2017 (UTC)
Oops, forgot the Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi part. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 03:48, 19 February 2017 (UTC)
@BlackcurrantTea: thanks very much for the information. That errainly sounds more manageable than I expected- but it could still be a helluva translation project! Which I wouldn't expect anyone to undertake; the .nl article is one thing- <250 words- but that could be something else  :o Thanks again though! O Fortuna!...Imperatrix mundi. 14:03, 19 February 2017 (UTC)
It's the weekend- is Drmies still around...?  ;) — O Fortuna! Imperatrix mundi. 17:24, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
  • (outdent a bit) Look at your draft. I did a thing or two. That one source, Groot, has everything you need for a stub. Drmies (talk) 17:59, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
Great stuff! Thanks very much Drmies, I'll have a go at that then. Much appreciated. — O Fortuna! Imperatrix mundi. 18:08, 24 March 2017 (UTC)
Absolutely. I may get back to this later today--translating/paraphrasing that bit from that book is no big chore, and I'm going to leave the cleanup to you. :) Drmies (talk) 18:12, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

The Literature of the Fox: A Reference and Critical Guide to Anglo-Jewish Writing[edit]

Hi. This is a bit of a long shot. I recently brought our entry on Lazarus Aaronson to featured article status. Now, however, a book has been published which I believe contains a lot of new information on him. The book, titled The Literature of the Fox: A Reference and Critical Guide to Anglo-Jewish Writing, is written by William Baker and Jeanette Roberts Shumaker. It is available on Amazon.

I am interested in the chapter "Pioneers: E. O. Deutsch, B. L. Farjeon, Israel Gollancz, Leonard Merrick, and Lazarus Aaronson". It would be great if anyone with access to this chapter trough their library, could share it with me. –P. S. Burton (talk) 16:45, 21 February 2017 (UTC)

@P. S. Burton: Currently, only two libraries have it. One is the Library of Congress, and the other is a small seminary in Ohio. I expect that this will be picked up by other libraries in due time, but it was only published a week ago, so you may need to give it a bit of time. ~ Rob13Talk 17:12, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
  • @P. S. Burton, try emailing the authors—they might be excited about your project czar 03:44, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

@Cuchullain: I have Electronic Gaming Monthly. Please email me for a copy. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 06:29, 4 March 2017 (UTC)

Article in The Boston Globe[edit]

Is it possible to have a PDF of this obituary with the date of publication please? I can't see it on legacy.com; it must be 2005 but it is unclear. It would also be better to cite The Boston Globe directly. Please ping me when you have it. Thank you.Zigzig20s (talk) 08:47, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Hawaiian Music and Musicians: An Illustrated History[edit]

This may be easier if it was done via a physical checking out and scanning rather than requesting pages to be scanned since I have no idea the specific page numbers. I can ballpark guess if that is easier. Please send me either the table of content or index and the pages (if there are any) for Nani Alapai and Henry N. Clark. Thanks so much.

--KAVEBEAR (talk) 11:23, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

There is also this 2012 edition. I am not picky which edition it comes from, whichever is easier to find:

: Doing... --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 01:14, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

@MrLinkinPark333: Were you able to locate this? Someone has pointed out that I may have gotten something's wrong at Talk:Nani Alapai and would need this source to correct that mistake.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 20:52, 16 March 2017 (UTC)
@KAVEBEAR: Not yet. Haven't had time to. And for clarification, the one I can access is the 1979 version. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:30, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── @KAVEBEAR: Don't mean to duplicate MrLinkinPark333's efforts, but I too have access to the 1979 edition and may be able to do some of the grunt work. It's an encyclopedia-style volume. There is no encyclopedia entry for Nani Alapai. From the index, this is the list of articles in which she's mentioned:

  • Ahi Wela, p. 3
  • Berger, Henry, pp. 40, 41-42
  • Ellis Brothers: William and John, pp. 73, 74
  • Falsetto, p. 91
  • Machado, Lena, p. 236
  • Panama-Pacific International Exposition, p. 291
  • Record Industry in Hawai'i, pp. 325, 326, 327
  • Royal Hawaiian Band, p. 340
  • Ua Like No A Like, p. 391
  • Appendix, p. 417

Typically she's mentioned in connection with a song she sang or someone she sang with. Machado's style is described as "reminiscent of Nani Alapai". The closest thing to an entry of her own is two sentences in the appendix (p. 417):

ALAPAI, NANI. One of the most popular female vocalists during the late 19th century. The first female singer for the Royal Hawaiian Band (1873-1912); recorded with William Ellis (1904-1905) on Victor.

If Wikipedia is correct, and she was born in December 1874, then obviously she wasn't singing for the band from 1873. The band had a long history and went through a couple name changes. Could the parenthetical years be referring to the era/incarnation of the band with which she sang? The one page she's mentioned on in Royal Hawaiian Band (p. 340) only muddies the waters:

During this period the band also featured female vocalists ... The first was the celebrated Nani Alapai, who made her debut in 1873 and continued til 1914 ...

1873 is again a physical impossibility, and the end date doesn't match the appendix.

There is no encyclopedia entry for Clark, nor is there an index entry for Henry N. Clark. There are index entries for Harry Clark and Henry K. Clark (6 pages total). Does this help you identify what you need? --Worldbruce (talk) 03:22, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

Worldbruce, I haven't started the requested yet. If you would like to help complete the request, I am for it.--MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:26, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
@MrLinkinPark333: Please do not perform this request anymore if you have only access to the 1979 version. I don't need the scans if there is nothing of consequence other than the stuff repeating the sources I have already used. Thanks.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 03:36, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
@Worldbruce: Thank you so much. I wrote the article on Nani Alapai. The date problem is precisely why I wanted to find out more info about her. Literally an anonymous IP editor stated she was not the first vocalist and that she did not join in the 1870s and cited the encyclopedia on the talk page of the article. I wanted to give that person the benefit of the doubt and check the sources myself and possibly find something else that might be a new lead since Kanahele is a reputable Hawaiian historian. I have been following the trail for the 1873 claim and it seems to rooted in an interview by her adopted grandson and the music magazine he helped published in the 1970s. I still want to believe that there may be something in the new 2012 edition that may be different from you have found since usually new edition update upon older misinformation . Do you have access to that edition?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 03:36, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
Unfortunately no, I do not. Worldcat shows only 13 copies of the 2012 edition, three of which are in Hawaii. The Wiki Education Foundation really ought to broker a visiting scholar position for you with University of Hawaii. --Worldbruce (talk) 14:54, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

2012 edition[edit]

Could somebody possibly perform an index search of the 2012 edition for any biographical additions that may have been added to Nani Alapai as User:Worldbruce did above for the 1979 edition. If there is nothing new, no need to scan the pages. Thank you.

Hillside School District 93[edit]

Would anyone mind checking Illinois newspapers for articles about Hillside School District 93? (in other words the "School District 93" in Hillside, Illinois?) - I'm trying to find information (particularly articles about non-routine events from say the Chicago Sun-Times or the Chicago Tribune) to bolster the article's notability on the Spanish Wikipedia.

Thanks! --WhisperToMe (talk) 13:40, 18 March 2017 (UTC)

I would like to have:

All three are available on highbeam, but my subscription has expired. Highbeam has some other articles with a search result that might be useful but checking is required. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 00:38, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

Sent nine others from Chicago Daily Tribune and Chicago Tribune between 1949 and 1971. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:42, 19 March 2017 (UTC)

Do you guys have access to academic article databases? The user who I am talking to feels the information in the Chicago Tribune does not confer enough notability. While I disagree with that, I feel that I need to have additional sources related to this district. Do any academic articles or PhD theses talk about this district? I tried looking at the University of Illinois and Illinois State University libraries but couldn't get access to their databases to find specific articles. If you find any, I would really appreciate it!

Also if you can get:

  • "Press Summary." Illinois Information Service., 1 Oct 1999 p. 11. No ISBN present. @BU Rob13: @Worldbruce:

Thank you, WhisperToMe (talk) 13:25, 20 March 2017 (UTC)

I can't locate academic sources in my searching, and it's unlikely any exist. I don't know about any other-language Wikipedia's policies, but on enwiki, the Tribune articles likely confer notability. ~ Rob13Talk 14:22, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
@BU Rob13: Eswiki has the similar GNG policy text, but some users argue that the information on construction of the school and the bond failure in the 1970s is too routine and not encyclopedia-worthy. I wonder if there is an angle with the 1970s mental health program set up in conjunction with Northern Illinois University. If some other mental health journals/science journals wrote about it in detail this could be useful. WhisperToMe (talk) 00:07, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

Die Marquesaner und ihre Kunst, Band III[edit]

This may be difficult since I don't know the exact page numbers, so it would require flipping through a physical copy of the book. The book is "Die Marquesaner und ihre Kunst, Band III"; seen here. The first and second volumes are online but the third is not. The cover should look like this. The pages I would need access to would be the ones about commons:Category:Opferkopf Manuiotaa and the accompany descriptions and images associated with it; "Manuiotaa" and "Puamau" would be the key search terms to look for in the index or in image captions.

See Wikipedia:Reference desk/Archives/Humanities/2017 March 18#Karl von den Steinen and User talk:Pp.paul.4#Tiki for more clues as I look more into the exact page numbers. After looking at some results on worldcat, it may actually not be accessible in the states so let me know if this is highly impossible, so I can withdraw this.

--KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:03, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

If you figure out the page numbers somehow, my university holds a copy in Italy and could scan & send them. Can't help with index searches, though, sorry. FourViolas (talk) 12:19, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
@FourViolas: You could probably request a scan of the entire index. My library has filled such requests before. ~ Rob13Talk 16:51, 23 March 2017 (UTC)
Good point! I'll give that a try and let you know when I hear back (likely ~1wk). FourViolas (talk) 20:27, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

I just got some additional clues. A photo of MANUIOTAA appears on p. 121 of this pdf and, in better resolution, in a comparison of the two heads MANUIOTAA and TIU-OO. Also the three volumes were reprinted in 2008 and here are the worldcat.org search results from them: https://www.worldcat.org/search?q=Die+Marquesaner+und+ihre+Kunst&dblist=638&fq=yr%3A2008&qt=facet_yr%3A. One seem to be in some American universities: https://www.worldcat.org/title/marquesaner-und-ihre-kunst-studien-uber-die-entwicklung-primitiver-sudseeornamentik-nach-eigenen-reiseergebnissen-und-dem-material-der-museen/oclc/904785628 . Thanks.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:11, 24 March 2017 (UTC)

I just received notice that 'Die Marquesaner "is currently unavailable in any participating libraries. We are transferring this request to Interlibrary Borrowing - please allow an additional 1-2 weeks for this request to be filled." I'll let you know when I next hear from them. FourViolas (talk) 22:16, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
@KAVEBEAR: Turns out I have access. This is available in the states (many places, actually), but there are multiple WorldCat entries which confuse things. You want this one. On the other hand, are you sure there's an index with this book? I looked at the online versions of the first two volumes and I wasn't able to locate something that looks like an index (there's something for figures). Either way, ideally, someone who speaks German would handle this request so they can be sure to locate the right section. ~ Rob13Talk 01:45, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

A Google search for that exact title (surrounded in double quotes, and regular Google not Google Scholar) returns a pdf file of it and the other papers in the same journal issue as one of the top hits. I'm not sure I should link to it here because it may be a copyright violation, but it worked for me. —David Eppstein (talk) 23:33, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Carol Channing interview in the Orlando Sentinel[edit]

I think this is available on newspapers.com, the Orlando Sentinel for November 24, 1978 and an interview with Carol Channing entitled "'Oh, oh, oh, fellas; look at the old girl now, fellas". I want to check the accuracy of this statement "She recalls that playwright Thornton Wilder loved the play so much that he came once a week, and later wrote The Matchmaker, a play based on it." in the article on Channing. The Matchmaker is earlier than Hello Dolly! not the other way round as this statement suggests so I want to see if it's the interview is Channing gets her memories wrong or our interpretation. Nthep (talk) 18:39, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

Not in Newspapers.com unless you have the publisher extra level of membership (expensive!), nor is it available in what online databases I have access to due to the old date. This will be available only via microform, probably. ~ Rob13Talk 23:39, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

Conference paper from ASME Energy Technology Conference, Diesel and Gas Engine Power Division[edit]

  • Fearon, J. G. (November 5–9, 1978). Application of Sulzer 12ASV 25/30 Diesel Engines to M-K TE70-4S Locomotives. ASME Energy Technology Conference. Houston, Texas.

This would be used in the creation of the article M-K TE70-4S, concerning a diesel locomotive. This is a conference paper, probably about 12 pages in length. The ASME id is 78-DGP-15. I believe it is available in conference proceedings titled "[Papers] contributed by the Diesel & Gas Engine Power Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for presentation at the Energy Technology Conference & Exhibition, Houston, Texas, November 5-9, 1978." The publishing body is the "American Society of Mechanical Engineers., Diesel and Gas Engine Power Division." I have been unable to obtain these proceedings via Inter-Library Loan at my local library. Any library with significant holdings of ASME proceedings from this period may have what I'm looking for. ASME digitization only goes back to 1988, with some limited exceptions.

There's a similar-sounding set of proceedings for this conference for the "Petroleum Division" which do not contain this paper. Google Scholar turns up a citation to Mechanical Engineering, vol. 101, January 1979, page 87. This is merely the digest listing of the paper, which I've already consulted. The only library which I know for sure holds these proceedings is National Research Council (Canada): [4], but I expect there are others. I realize this is a hard ask, but I think I've gotten about as far as I can with my own resources, and the article (probably) can't be written without this paper.

--Mackensen (talk) 16:03, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

I'm getting this via loan. I think that's the necessary source, but I'm not 100% sure. ~ Rob13Talk 17:12, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
It's not, unfortunately (I thought so too last week). That's the Petroleum Division proceedings. Same conference, but different papers. Mackensen (talk) 17:15, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
In that case, it gets decidedly more difficult. Only the library you indicated has that source. ~ Rob13Talk 17:27, 30 March 2017 (UTC)
My hope is that the paper in question is actually available more widely but that this has been obscured by WorldCat. It's a small hope, admittedly. Mackensen (talk) 20:37, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Update: reading through chapter 1 I can't see pages 2-4 now, which is strange because I saw a drill site table on one of those pages that I can no longer see. Must be a strict interpretation of limited views of the page; in any case, if I could get chapter 1 as well that would be great. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 01:53, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
Very strange. 2-4 is still viewable for me @Mike Christie: I know that 73-76 are not available from the preview, but all of chapter 1 is available. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 02:38, 7 April 2017 (UTC)
I've had this happen a couple of times before; I recall years ago using a textbook on medieval coins for multiple articles, and eventually Google started shutting down the pages I could see. Presumably there was some limit based on my IP's view count. I just VPNed to my work PC and tried it from there, on both Chrome and IE, and I'm now getting "You have either reached a page that is unavailable for viewing or reached your viewing limit for this book". I can still see pages 5-8, but now 2-4 aren't listed as "not part of this preview" any more, they're just not there at all. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 03:00, 7 April 2017 (UTC)

WhisperToMe: 1984, perhaps? The paper didn't exist in 1964. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 06:51, 8 April 2017 (UTC)
The person who wrote the segment stated it was 1964. It's possible there was a different paper with the same name, or 1984 is the correct date? WhisperToMe (talk) 15:14, 9 April 2017 (UTC)
WhisperToMe, I was guessing at the most likely typo. The original editor may have gotten the 1964 date from the school's own history page - or the school may have gotten it from Wikipedia.

The only pre-Revolutionary, English-language newspapers in Teheran I've found on Worldcat are The Teheran Journal and Kaysan International (which may have been a magazine). It's entirely possible that there were others, and one may have been called The Tehran Times, or the school may be translating the title and quote from a paper in Persian or another language. Sorry, not very helpful, I know. BlackcurrantTea (talk) 08:45, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the info! If somebody does find an article from any of those papers about the establishment of the Pakistan school, that would be helpful WhisperToMe (talk) 11:32, 10 April 2017 (UTC)
