JSTOR is one of the largest and most reputable journal archives in the world. This page is to facilitate signups for a pilot collaboration between the Wikimedia Foundation and JSTOR. This pilot provides free access to JSTOR's complete archive to 100 500 active editors for one year, in order to better support the most active and experienced authors of the encyclopedia. Active through December 2015. See blog post.

The content set currently available to the Wikipedia editors includes all of JSTOR's archival journal collections (now about ~2,000 journals) and the 19th Century British Pamphlets collection (26,000 pamphlets), but the books (~20,000) and the current journals (more recent issues for ~300 titles) are not available in the Wikipedia pilot. TWL is working with JSTOR to potentially expand the package available to editors.

Note that around a hundred universities provide free alumni access – please check if this applies to you!

To get access

1. You will need to be an active editor. If you haven't been particularly active lately, preference may be given to another request.
2. You will need to have a confirmed email address, and be willing to provide this address to someone from the Foundation and to JSTOR (unlike Wikipedia, JSTOR access requires email). The Interior is the current contact.
3. You will need to sign up here, with access given out in the order of signups. Please sign up even if the 500 person limit has been reached, so that overall interest can be measured and we can get a waitlist started. Before you post a request, please check on this page to see whether you already have access through your local public library and/or educational institution.

Please be aware

• If you are given access but fail to register an account within a reasonable time, you may be asked to relinquish it to another requester.
• There is no minimum usage requirement, but if you're not really using your account and you're willing to give it to another person on the list, please let the account coordinator know.
• You will need to abide by the JSTOR Terms of Service, and should be comfortable with the fine print in the JSTOR Privacy Policy.

Requirements

• You do not have free online access to these JSTOR products through your local library or university
• You have your preferences enabled to receive email messages on English Wikipedia or on your home wiki linked from your application; (see Special:Preferences)
• You have an account that is a minimum of six months old
• You have a minimum of 500 edits to the encyclopedia
• You are active in content generation, research, or verification work

If you don't quite meet the experience requirements but think you would still be a strong candidate for access, feel free to apply and you may be considered.

Expectations

Approved editors may

• Search, view, retrieve, and display portions of restricted content
• Electronically save portions of restricted content
• Print out single copies of portions of restricted content
• Comply with any terms and conditions which appear on the particular pages of the JSTOR website they are accessing

Approved editors will not

• Share their account logins or passwords with others
• Mass scrape or mass download JSTOR content
• Systematically make printed or electronic copies of multiple extracts of restricted content available for any purpose
• Datamine metadata without permission, in order, for instance, to use metadata for auto-created stub articles
• Use the access provided through the Pilot for any commercial purpose

Private and confidential information

• You will need to have a confirmed email address to participate. You understand and agree that your name and email address may be shared with representatives of the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikipedia Library, and JSTOR. While Wikipedia Library coordinators are volunteers (not employees or contractors of the Wikimedia Foundation or JSTOR), they have signed confidentiality agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation with regards to the personal information they may handle for the Wikipedia Library.

2. Epolk (talk · contribs) I have been an editor for a decade. Per X!'s Tools I have over 17,000 edits, around 14,000 on unique pages. As the number of articles on Wikipedia have reached a critical mass, I have moved from creating and proofreading articles to creating citations for articles. The publicly available sources for searching scholarly works usually point to an abstract for an article or a pay site (e.g. JSTOR) so my ability to provide accurate and complete citations are limited. As for my areas of interest, they tend toward history and the sciences, especially zoology as this area seems to be most in need of expansion and citation of sources. 9. allixpeeke (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email)), I have been active on Wikipedia for over ten years (with over 5,000 edits), on Wikiquote for over twenty-one months (with almost 14,000 edits), and on Wikidata for over twenty-one months (with over 1,000 edits).  I also edit Commons and Wikisource from time to time (and I've been known to irregularly edit Wiktionary, Wikinews, Simple, and Wikibooks, among others).

   My main focus on Wikipedia has been political philosophy, while my focus tends to be broader on Wikiquote, where I've done the majority of my editing.  As an example of something I'm currently working on on Wikiquote, I've been recently focused on figures from Colonial America.  Although I've started with Maryland, I've designs eventually cover all of the major figures of that era from all of the America colonies.  Thus, so far, I've created pages for Lord Baltimores George Calvert and Cecil Calvert; governors Leonard Calvert, Thomas Greene, William Stone, Josias Fendall, and Thomas Notley; and rebels William Davyes and John Pate.  (This is by no means to imply that Colonial America is my sole focus on Wikiquote, of course; I've created pages as diverse as the Fibonacci sequence, Jefferson in Paris, honey (the food), Honey (the band), Lady Godiva, Monday, Mother Nature, and police state, just to name only a very few.)

   Currently, I use a combination of the books I've accumulated over the years and the Internet in order to conduct research, both for Wikipedia and for Wikiquote, although I did have experience with JSTOR back in my college years.  It would certainly prove useful for my various endeavours on the various Wiki projects.

11. Kevin Gorman (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) This is the first long chunk of time I've not had jstor access directly through academia, and it's been a killer. It makes it hard to write articles, verifying facts already present in WP articles that are reliant on jstor indexed journals in existing articles harder, and editing other existing articles harder. I write on a variety of subjects (though lately I've been working on a variety of bird articles, and JSTOR content has actually helped me in the past in this area): I've had 10 articles, predominantly written by me, achieve good status and 3 have been promoted as featured articles – with a few in the pipeline. I often use research access to help others with their writing efforts here, as well as to check sources for verification. Recently I have been doing significant expansion of legal and historical articles. Legal articles are really hard to get a hold off unless one owns expensive legal database access. In am multilingual, but though most of my over 8000 edits have been in English, I have 19 in French, 5 in Swedish and 4 in Catalan, and can translate from most European languages. The fields covered are principally in the arts: literature, music, science and films - which interests started by the discovery of many of my ancestors who were talented in these areas. I no longer have that access, but I would like to continue creating content with the help of articles available on JSTOR. 26. scope_creep (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Active on WP:EN only, for around 10+ years, in good standing I guess. I work mostly in military history at the moment, which started the series of articles I've worked on via an article request for a German logician called Heinrich Scholz, which ultimately led to what I'm doing now. The work I'm doing now is detailed, technical and difficult, particularly trying to track salient information, separating hearsay and oft repeated information from fact. Mostly I get information from Google Book, speaking to people via email, library books, and German and American archives, but information is sparse, by the simple fact that the work was hidden by nature, e.g. German cryptology. Access to JStor would help on this, since I bump into all time, particularly today, when I was looking for information on German Naval Enigma. I use JSTOR in connection with very major re-writes of articles, wee: Squanto, Archibald Cox, Stanley Steingut, Canada warbler, Bartolomew Gosnold, Ferdinando Gorges, John F. Hylan, John Smith (explorer), William Merritt Chase, as well as many miscellaneous cites in various articles. (You can see the via-JSTOR in each of these to verify.) Some of these are still works in progress. I am in midst of big re-write of Georg Frideric Handel (you can see the articles I have added in "sources"), but I can't finish without JSTOR. These re-writes often take several months because I combine JSTOR with library reach and read books on the subjects. This is why I wanted to give heads up before I was cut off.
