A notable fact: one of the book's characters is ICC founding member Marc Chirik. Apparently Malaquais, at least for a time, was a member of the left communist Gauche Communiste de France, to which Chirik also belonged.

I think the 'Marc L averne' character' is done pretty well, although if you asked the actual Marc he used to say it was a bit idealised.....I think in general the book is a very vivid portrait of the life of the 'exiles' in Marseilles during the war and well worth reading, with some interesting political debates, like the one between Marc and the Victor Serge character who supports the 'democratic' camp.
