Iraqi security forces (ISF) is a term used by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) to describe law enforcement and military forces of the federal government of the Republic of Iraq.
The ISF consists of the following agencies and departments:
Security Forces is an umbrella term frequently used to describe statutory organisations with military, paramilitary, or internal security mandates. In the legal context of several nations, the term has variously denoted police and military units working in concert, or the predominant role of non-conventional agencies (such as gendarmerie) in the external and internal provision of public security.
Examples of formally designated security forces include:

Mosul is completely ruled by the Islamic State terror group headquartered in Al-Raqqah, Syria. The legitimate government of Iraq stopped paying salaries soon after the city was overrun by militants. Located some 400 km (250 mi) north of Baghdad, the original city stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has grown to encompass substantial areas on both the "Left Coast" (east side) and the "Right Coast" (west side) as the two banks are described in the local language.

In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives. The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor. Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time. But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. Fighting is raging between al Qaeda-backed militants and Iraq's security forces for control of two key cities in the embattled Anbar province, even as a deal was in place with Sunni tribesmen to fight alongside Iraqi police against the militant group. The renewed violence in the Sunni province has raised concern about the stability of the government amid dueling claims by the terror group and security forces over who was in control of Falluja and Ramadi. The Iraqi civil war never really ended it just went off the boil for a while. Last year, the heat was turned back to high, with the number of civilian deaths from political violence doubling to roughly 8,000 people over the previous year, the highest civilian death toll since at least 2008. The battles in Mosul were slowed in the past two weeks amid grueling fighting inside Mosul with extremist militants, who used the city's civilians as human shields, carried out brutal counter attacks in small groups moving quickly throughout the districts, and resorted to suicide car bombs, in addition to mortar and sniper attacks. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi on Oct. 17 announced a major offensive to retake Mosul, the country's second largest city. Since then, Iraqi security forces, backed by international coalition forces, have inched to the eastern fringes of Mosul and made progress on other routes around the city. Mosul, some 400 km north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, has been under IS control since June 2014, when Iraqi government forces abandoned their weapons and fled,...
In one of the most grueling days of fighting ISIS in Mosul, Iraqi Security Forces retook a key site – a provincial governmental complex that ISIS was using as a headquarters. A series of videos from Rudaw’s reporters on the ground show the fierce battles, house-to-house clashes, exchanges of fire between Iraqi and ISIS snipers, and blood shed in order to once again fly Iraq’s flag over Mosul’s provincial government buildings.
Iraq’s security forces have started house-to-house searches in districts near Mosul’s Old City, as they look to weed out so-called ISIL sleeper cells, CGTN reports. EXCLUSIVE: VICE News Meets Barack Obama: http://bit.ly/1wT03Bi Last summer, the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) swept from Syria into northern Iraq, routing Iraqi security forces and seizing the city of Mosul. Soon afterward, the group declared the establishment of a dubious "caliphate" in the area it controls and rebranded itself the Islamic State. With Iraq's army weakened and radical militants advancing on Baghdad, the country's Iran-backed Shia militias — which have their own history of sectarian abuses — fought back, halting the Islamic State's progress. The militias have successfully combated Islamic State fighters on the ground with the assistance of air strikes from a US-led military coalition. But their growing influence within Iraq's government amid acc...

The Iraqi army and its allies have begun an offensive to drive ISIL fighters out of the most populated western area of Mosul. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi made the announcement during his appearance in Munich for an international security conference. Just a month ago - Iraqi troops took control of the eastern side of Mosul -- the last ISIL stronghold in Iraq. Government forces are expected to target the city's airport first during this new phase. It's located at the southern edge, to the west of the Tigris river, which divides the city. Western Mosul is where the old city centre is located. Commanders say the battle may prove to be more difficult than in the east, because tanks and armoured vehicles cannot pass through its narrow streets. ISIL fighters have also developed a ...
