Torcidas organizadas are formal (or informal) associations of football fans in Brazil in the same vein as Americas Barra brava and European ultras. The name is based on the verb torcer, which means "to root for" but also "to wring" and "to turn". The supposition is that the behaviour of the fans present at the stadium could help the team gather strength to beat the opponent.
In the beginning 1940s, and until the 1960s, torcidas organizadas were informal associations of fans who gathered to buy fireworks, cloth for large flags, and other stuff to be used during celebrations. Later, such associations became permanent and were formalised legally as non-profit recreational associations, still with the primary goal of providing a better spectacle at the stadium and surroundings. Some of the noteworthy torcidas organizadas from this time were Torcida Jovem Fla and Raça Rubro-Negra (Flamengo), Gaviões da Fiel (Corinthians), Torcida Independente and Dragões da Real (São Paulo FC), Mancha Verde (Palmeiras), Força Jovem Vasco (Vasco da Gama), Máfia Azul (Cruzeiro), Galoucura (Atlético Mineiro), Torcida Jovem do Santos (Santos FC, Young Flu (Fluminense), Fúria Jovem do Botafogo (Botafogo), Bamor (Esporte Clube Bahia), Torcida Jovem do Sport (Sport Club do Recife), Os Imbatíveis (Esporte Clube Vitória), Inferno Coral (Santa Cruz Futebol Clube), Os Fanáticos (Clube Atlético Paranaense) Império Alviverde (Coritiba Foot Ball Club) and Garra Alvinegra (ABC Futebol Clube). In the beginning the torcida organizada movement was fragmentary, but would later consolidate into larger bodies or leagues. Some torcidas would open branches throughout the country to support their teams playing away, given the national range of their supporters.
Torcida Split is a HNK Hajduk Split supporters' group in Croatia and formerly Yugoslavia. Founded on 28 October 1950, Torcida is the oldest supporters group in Europe. They are one major football fan groups in Croatia and the largest in Southeast Europe. The name "Torcida" is the Brazilian Portuguese word for "supporters". Club fans operate from Zrinsko Frankopanska-17, Split. The slogan of the fans, "Hajduk lives forever", testifies to the long and continuing tradition of Hajduk Split, which has survived without change from its establishment until today. (While states and leagues have failed, "Hajduk lives forever").
The group as a whole traditionally maintains good relations with the Portuguese S.L. Benfica football club supporters No Name Boys.
Torcida members and other fervent fans of the club gather in the north stand at the stadium of Poljud, from where they fiercely support their club. Torcida member often use flares, smoke flares and other pyrotechnics to heat up the atmosphere on the stadium.
HNK Hajduk Split, commonly referred to as Hajduk Split (Croatian pronunciation: [xǎjduːk splît]) or simply Hajduk, is a Croatian football club founded in 1911, and based in the city of Split. The club's home ground, since 1979, is the 35,000-seat Poljud Stadium, and the team's traditional home colors are white shirts with blue shorts and socks.
Hajduk was founded by a group of Split students in a famous tavern known as U Fleku in Prague. Between the early 1920s and 1940, Hajduk regularly participated in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia national championship. Following World War II and the formation of the Yugoslav league system in 1946, Hajduk went on to spend the entire SFR Yugoslavia period in top level. Their run continued following the breakup of Yugoslavia, as the club joined the Croatian First League in its inaugural season in 1992. They are one of the most successful teams in Croatia and ex-Yugoslavia, having won nine Yugoslav and six Croatian league championships, in addition to nine Yugoslav and five Croatian cup titles.
