My grandfather didn't pump water uphill for his hydro-electric power (as Malcolm has suggested). Grandpa had a dam up the hill, in Tasmania, and the turbine was in the shearing shed. Every evening he would turn an enormous wheel in the house slowly and on would come electric light. One night, it was clearly blocked. Next day, on opening up the pipeline, out slipped a conger eel, and all was well again. Patricia Spooner, North Turramurra.
