In the traditional top ten format (it may help if you hum Sign of the Swingin' Cymbal to yourself as you read):

  1. Lib Dem Leadership - the runners and riders. With added Star Trek metaphor! from the 27th of September. Predictably, many of the comments concentrate on the sci-fi rather than the Lib Demmery. But as (nearly) always on my blog, the comments are better than the post.

  2. I Hate It When Politicians Talk About "Hard-Working Families" (UPDATED) from August the 30th. A phrase which is coming out of Tory mouths much more than Lib Dem mouths these days, and I feel I can take some of the credit for that - me and the lovely Caron.

  3. Spotify Without Facebook an embarrassingly typo-ridden entry from the 10th of April. In which I ask people to add me to their Spotify f-lists the old-fashioned way.

  4. Questions for FCC and FPC candidates from the 9th of October. This is probably the thing I am proudest of doing all year. I can't take all the credit for it, by any means; a whole load of people on one of the Lib Dem email lists helped me with formulating questions, and obviously if nobody had answered it would have been a bit embarrassing. But I feel like I made a positive contribution to the internal democracy of the party, and I'm very glad of that.

  5. Chris Williamson MP: sadly misinformed, or a liar? from the 4th of June. In which I turn my ire on a Labour MP.

  6. Home Office Rape Campaign Goes Live from the 5th of March. In which I am full of praise for the awesome Lynne Featherstone.

  7. A Message For the Lib Dem Leadership: Stop trying to shut US up and do your jobs from the 2nd of April. The follow-up post to this comes in at #2.

  8. Oh Dear. Christian MPs demanding a reversal of the advertising ban on the healing power of prayer from the 26th of March. One of my periodic spats with Tim Farron, whom I really do genuinely get on with and respect on most things. But we tend to part company when it comes to religion... Go back to #9 if you want to see me being happy with Tim ;)

  9. I've Just Got Off The Phone After a Conference Call With the Office of the DPM from the 3rd of April. This one caused a bit of controversy. Apparently some people didn't expect that when a conference call was set up by bloggers, with a bunch of bloggers participating, that some of us might blog about it...

  10. Chris Chibnall: a Rant from the 27th August. My top post of 2012 is pretty intemperate but I still stand by it. I recommend [personal profile] magister's comment on the post too, detailing why this was not just a solitary occurrence, but part of a much larger pattern.
Mostly politics, a bit of tech, and some Doctor Who. Not really a massive surprise on the subject matter, then... I'm a bit sad that four of the top five are basically me being horrible. I know I *can* be horrible, but I don't like to think of myself as horrible. And by Cthulhu's tentacly beard I don't half swear a lot... Food for thought for New Year's Resolutions perhaps.

I am really, genuinely proud of #7 though.

I'd like to thank the 33,117 people who have visited my humble blog this year, especially because 61.23% of you were returning visitors. I hope I can continue to post things you want to read in the coming year.

2010: a year in StatPorn

  • The Numbers. Google analytics gave me the following numbers, which do not include people who read via RSS, facebook import, or LJ/DW friends pages:
    • 38,883 Absolute unique visitors
    • 62,160 visits, just over 45% of which were new.
    • 31,603 (81%) of my visitors came from the UK, and 4 from Qatar (Hello Nicki and friends!)
    • Average page views is 1.60, and average time on site is 1 minute 45 seconds, which considering that both of those include search bots is not bad.

  • Referral sites - 67% of traffic. The rise of the aggregator has has an effect this year; aside from google variants, most of my traffic came from twitter, facebook, networked blogs and the ever-relaiable libdemblogs aggregator. Last year the majority was from links and blogrolls in other people's blogs.

  • Search Terms - 18% of traffic from searches. Aside from variations on my name and user name, I'm still getting a lot of hits for Ashes to Ashes and Stephanie Flanders Stockings LOL

  • Top Five entries:
    1. Ashes to Ashes Finale.
    2. The Election for Who Geeks.
    3. Yet More Presidential Musings: Bugger it, I'm Going to Go For It.
    4. What if David Cameron loses his seat?
    5. Newsnight Porn: Scary Stuff.

Things that are worse at the end of 2010 than they were at the beginning:

  • My physical health. Mainly due to Gideon, I am pretty unhealthy at the moment. Exercise has been non-existent for a couple of months now, and I feel terribly weak and feeble. I have has surgery twice this year, and neither time was fun.

  • Finances. Between my hours getting cut at work, various emergencies like Byron's tumour and me being off work sick for six weeks minimum, and my continual inability to sort out benefits, my finances are in a pretty parlous state. But there is hope for the future. I have been filling in forms and such. Hopefully things will be more stable soon.

  • Work. Mainly because Mark and Liz are jacking in, work feels very uncertain. Also being off sick leaves me feeling out of the loop about everything.

  • Some political stuff. My political idealism has taken a real dent from being in coalition with the Tories. Ros not standing again for party president was a shock. Evan losing his seat was horrendous. And various members of my local party continue to piss me off with their small-ninded parochialness.

Things that are better at the end of 2010 than they were at the beginning:

  • My mental health. I feel a lot more stable and grounded now than I have done for a long time.

  • Relationships. [personal profile] matgb and I are still vomit-inducingly in love, and I have added [personal profile] magister to my roster. In September the Duracell Bunny and I sorted out the terms of our relationship and that now feels very stable and secure too.

  • Holly. Holly continues to grow into the most awesome person I know. I am so proud of my daughter.

  • Byron. He's like a new pup since he had his tumour removed.

  • Other political stuff. Pragmatism has taken a big boost: coalition might not be fun, but it's interesting. We now have Huppmeister J as official minister for geeks, and he's ace. Lynne Featherstone is equalities minister, and that's more than any of us could have hoped for or dreamed of this time last year. We're making a difference in government: it's not ideal, but it's better than unfettered Tories would have been.

  • Fandom stuff. Horror, in particular, seems to be undergoing something of a renaissance. Mark Gatiss's History of Horror was awesome, there was a new ghost story for Christmas, and Hammer Films has risen from the grave (again).

  • Doctor Who! I can't get over how much better the series is with its new showrunner and new lead characters. I love Eleven. I adore Amy. And the writing is exponentially better now than it was under Rusty.

In Conclusion:

Overall? It could have been worse, but it could have been a whole lot better. It doesn't have the miserable, low-grade, dull, consistent shittiness of 2009; the highs have been great, but the lows have been awful. Thank you all for being here for me in whatever guise you have been, whether that be my bestest friend, or just a lurker who never comments. You all rock.

The prospect of 2011 fills me with hope. [personal profile] matgb and [personal profile] magister and I are going to find a nice house together. It may even have a shed. I have a lovely new phone. I have lots of friends and family that I love, and who love me back. My daughter and my doggies are happy and healthy. We have lots of stuff we plan to do for the podcast, and I feel pretty well-embedded as a semi-regular at the Pod Delusion now. The FFW has its tenth anniversary. And the new series trailer for Doctor Who looks AWESOME!

So yeah, roll on 2011. Let's see what the future holds...

A big thank you to the 23,060 people who visited this blog since I activated google analytics on it on Monday the 23rd of April 2009. That's quite a huge number, isn't it? And that doesn't include anyone who reads by RSS or on their LJ or DW friends lists.

My whelm. It has gone over.

My top three posts were:
  1. My review of last week's Doctor Who (609 absolute unique visitors)
  2. A post advertising the fact that I have invite codes (I currently have 6, by the way) (491 visitors)
  3. And another post advertising invite codes (459 visitors)
This tells me that lots of people are still searching for DW invite codes, and that a link from Who Daily is worth it's weight in gold - particularly since not only was the who review a record-breaker, but my regular readership has gone up by about half since.

My top ten referrers were:

1. google.com
2. (direct) / (none)
3. libdemblogs.co.uk
4. libdemvoice.org
5. twitter.com
6. Who Daily
7. facebook.com
8. google.co.uk
9. iaindale.blogspot.com
10. charlottegore.com

So thanks to all of them, too.

Lets see what 2010 brings, shall we? :D

Since I haven't done this for a while (and have been shamefully bad at blogging - see how far I have dropped in the Wikio willy-waving contest! Woe!) I'm not going to compare my figures until next week. This week's headline figures, then:
  • 470 absolute unique visitors
  • 916 visits
  • Busiest day: Tuesday
  • Most-clicked-through-to entry: The Blood is the Life for Sept 1st, 159 pageviews

That eBay total is not looking good. Will have to list some more stuff. So far I can pay for a room for 1.5 nights at conference, if we don't eat. Looks like we better put the sleeping bags in the car...

I'd like to say thank you to all of you guys who have helped me through today's various crises. You are awesome, and I couldn't cope without you

* group hug *

The other thing I'd like to tell you about is [personal profile] amazing_holly's school report, which I received this afternoon. It's excellent The attainment ranks go from 1-5 and the effort ranks are A for above average, B for average and C for below average. She got 1A for most things (including literacy, numeracy, art, science, and music) and 1B for most of the rest, except for listening to the teacher, in which she got a C for effort and ICT, in which she got 1C - i.e. she is well ahead of the rest of the class, and therefore doesn't put any effort in and finds it boring.

She's so much like me it's uncanny.

I'm changing the format of this a bit, and doing stats for the week, rather than the month; this means less continuity (and less C&P;) but hopefully makes it a bit more dynamic too.
