I'm feeling curious

Asda are reportedly trialing "quiet hour for autistic people" in one of their Manchester stores. I think this is a great idea, although I'm not sure the hour they've chosen (8am Saturday, which is a very busy time) is the best possible one (and yes I know there are probably practical reasons for the choice but aspie folks are so often nocturnal). What would you think if this was to happen in your local supermarket?

Ok, so I'm pretty much getting used to the formatting and such of new linkspam client, and I'm getting my head round the fact that it picks up everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, with a link in from twitter, even quoted tweets, so I need to be a lot less spammy with the tweeting in general, which is probably no bad anything, and oh god I'm rambling now... I'm feeling mischievous

I was reading this article earlier , and it occurred to me that I'd actually quite like a gender neutral honorific too, but I'm not comfortable with Mx - I'd feel like I was treading on toes of the non-binary and genderqueer folk. I did like the idea of Rear Admiral, but there's probably some possibility of being accused of fraud, and that's very rarely an option on dropdown forms anyway. One that is often an option is Rev, though. And there are various ways of being ordained online...

The ULC explicitly has no beliefs at all, which strikes me as up my street, but it's terminology is very Christian, and that puts me off.

Spiritual Humanism does have some beliefs, which mostly seem to accord with mine, but it seems a bit hippy.

There's Pastafarianism, of course, but I've been trying to cut down on the carbs, and there is the whole question of the Stripper Factory, which despite the assurances of the Flying Spaghetti Monster on twitter, does strike me as a bit dehumanising...

A new one on me is Dudeism, which genuinely strikes me as a belief system I could really get behind. But would they throw me out for being too bothered about things and being politically active?

And of course, I'm already a Pope of Discordia, as are we all, whether we want to be or not. But Pope is not generally an option available in dropdown menus either...

I'm not sure what the rules are for courts, these days. I suspect they're a bit more stringent than parliament. I know most courts let you choose a religious text if you are going to swear by almighty God to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God, but I don't know if you get a book to hold if you're affirming, or what they do with people from polytheistic faiths... Google gives me an article about the situation in Norn Iron and a .pdf of what happens in courts martial, but nothing concrete on English law other than lots of people saying it needs reforming...

Of the several on the list, two were acceptable (It's a Wonderful Life and The Muppet Christmas Carol); several were schmaltzy bollocks (e.g. Miracle on 34th St) and one is the most offensive misogynist pile of bollocks that ever bore the name of Christmas Movie, even if it DOES have Alan Rickman in it (Love Actually).

So here's a PROPER Christmas movie poll.

Film one also has Alan Rickman in it, but unlike ~~Stalking and Deceit~~ Love Actually he doesn't break Emma Thompson's heart in it. He does dance to Ode to Joy though :) It's also got the fantastic Coke Can shot.

I'm feeling irritated

Firstly, Calderdale Local Party has it's policy working group meeting to consider amendments to motions this Saturday. If you have an amendment to a motion that you need support for, email it through to me or Alisdair and we'll put it in front of PWG for consideration for our support.

The other thing that will happen at PWG is that we will consider our OWN amendments. There are several motions that I have an eye on for some minor tweaking (and probably some of the things I am thinking of will be accepted as drafting amendments by the submitters of the motion) but there is ONE motion in particular that I think has the potential to be as controversial as Floella Benjamin's motion on ~~censoring the internet~~ protecting children was.

Heartbreakingly, that is the Crime motion which has had Julian Huppert's name applied to it. After the farrago over DRIP I am less surprised than I might have been, but it's still depressing to see him put his name to something so chock full of sneaky legalese, hidden authoritarianism, and puritanical attitudes. My problems with this motion are so many and varied that I am actually considering doing a full speech against it, rather than trying to amend it. But what do YOU guys think I should do?

Current hair colour is the remains of what I did for conference, and needs sorting. I have no outside-the-house engagements this evening, and I'm bored of washed-outness. Those of you who have been to conference know what I'm talking about. You'll be sat having a quiet pint in the bar, and in walks Lord Ashdown. There is an instant change in the atmosphere. The sexual tension in the room goes through the roof. All the people-who-fancy-men sigh wistfully, and all the people-who-don't-fancy-men try to look that bit more impressive, while knowing it's futile.

It's hard to believe for someone who hasn't seen it happen; you don't get much of a sense of it from seeing the man on the telly or anything like that. I know this because I have been trying to convince a recent recruit to the party of the power of the Paddy Effect. She thinks she is going to be immune to it. She thinks I'm joking about how potent and irresistible it is. She thinks she'll be the one sat in the bar at Spring conf wondering what the hell is going on while everybody else has a minor meltdown.

On Friday I started having a pain where my ovary used to be. On Saturday my boss made me promise that if it was still hurting on Monday I would go see the doctor. Yesterday I went to see the doctor. He asked me lots of questions and poked and prodded at me and did a urine test and gave me some pills (probably made of suckrose and ackwah) and told me if it still hurt in 48 hours to come back.

This morning he rang me up and said he'd been thinking and wanted me to come back in. So I went back in and he poked and prodded again and asked exactly the same questions he asked yesterday and then said he wasn't sure what it was, and he'd swear it was ovarian but there's no ovary there, and it might be this really rare type of hernia, and I'd better go to the hospital for more tests.

So I went to the hospital. And after the nurse did paperwork and blood pressure a doctor came (she was quite fanciable, and commented favourably on my shoes) and did EXACTLY the same poking and prodding and questions as my doctor had done, took some blood, and then sent me for an x-ray. The x ray ladies liked my shoes too. I was wearing my Vibram Fivefingers.

After the x ray I sat in the waiting room for three hours watching challenge TV.

Eventually the cute doctor came back, bringing a registrar with her, and he poked and prodded and asked exactly the same questions as the cute doctor and my own doctor had both already asked me. Then he said that he couldn't feel a hernia, and that it seemed like something ovarian to him. At which point I pointed out that both ovary and fallopian tube had been removed from that side, so it couldn't be.

So, given the tests I have already had: there's nothing shown up in a urine test, nothing in the blood tests, and nothing on the x rays. Which means cancer is unlikely because they look for cancer markers in the blood, the surgeon who took my ovary out didn't leave her rolex in there because that would have shown up on the x ray, and I haven't got a bladder infection. So what do you reckon I have got, dear reader?
